GL technical support thread Empty GL technical support thread

Post by Casciavit Sat Jan 12, 2013 7:46 pm

If you're having an issue, with anything technology related, and no one can give you any good advice or help, maybe the gl members know a thing or two? So this is the thread where you ask questions, about the problem you have, and hopefully a gl member knows something about that problem.

I think you should sticky this thread red.

GL technical support thread Empty VLC player problem

Post by El Gunner Sat Jan 19, 2013 10:09 pm

I don't know if some of you experienced any problems with the VLC Media Player on your PC/laptop before... Well I for one currently have one. This media player doesn't play some movies. It does play the majority of my movies, but with some it juz shows a grey screen. It does play the sound though. Its juz the problem with the video. I've googled this problem and the supposed solutions I found didn't work Mad So I was hoping one of you guys could help me with this.

What the hell are you trying to play that VLC can't play? Can you at least post the video and audio codecs when asking for support like this? Granted CCCP is a solution, but installing CCCP is overkill...

Yesterday afternoon, I tried to open a pdf on my browser and the browser totally stopped working. After half an hour of being frozen and not even closing when I tried to stop the process in task manager, I just did a hard shut down of the laptop and turned it back on. After turning it back on, nothing worked. I could move the mouse around but whenever I tried to open anything, nothing would happen; everything would just continue loading for hours, even the simplest commands. When I tried to open task manager, nothing would happen for several minutes, then the screen would turn black and a message would pop up saying:
Failure to display security and shut down options. The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch.
When I clicked 'okay,' it would just bring me back to my desktop where everything was still as frozen as ever, and I couldn't even turn the laptop off without holding down the power button. Upon further investigation, I found that the problem only occurs once I connect to the internet. I googled the issue and found that the 'netsh winsock reset' command had helped a lot of other people with the problem, and it worked for me last night when I entered it in Safe Mode, but today the same problem occurred again and the command doesn't do anything for me anymore.

I have disabled the internet and scanned the computer for viruses, but Symantec hasn't found anything. I have also disabled many start-up applications, but nothing has helped. My laptop came with Windows pre-installed, so if I do a reboot of the operating system, I won't have my activation code, and I can't even download a program to search the computer for the activation code because it stops working once I connect to the internet.

I know this is a long-shot, but has anyone else experienced this problem before or know what is wrong?

GL technical support thread Wtfwtf10

This has been happening with Itunes lately. It worked like a month ago- the ipod would sync and everything would be fine and dandy and I could just transfer my music from itunes to my ipod. Yay.

The last several times though, that picture shows up. It says it recognizes my ipod for a second, then it goes away and says all of a sudden that my ipod is just somebody that it used to know. I've reinstalled itunes and done a couple other things, and the problem persists. Also, it charges, so it's not a problem with the USB or anything, it's just that Itunes can't recognize the ipod.

Anybody got a fix to this? Aren't Apple products supposed to work and be good and stuff?

@CBarca never been a fan of iTunes because it's a horribly inefficient program on Windows - it'll be using 300mb of RAM when Winamp and WMP are hovering around the 100mb range while even Zune hovered at 140mb. I don't know how attached you are to iTunes but I'd recommend you check if Winamp is compatible with your iPod. Can't really offer any other advice since Apple is often extremely vague on errors. Does your iPod work on another computer?

@El Gunner Installing CCCP because you can't play a video on VLC is like taking a chainsaw to cut a twig. I'm trying to find out the actual issue but if you're going to react like that go ahead, clog up your registry.

@Eman You're really going to trust Norton to tell you that there's no malware on your comp? Try Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. Also, post more info regarding your PC, what network interface you're using, operating system etc.

Posting System specs and versions of the software involved should be mandatory and put in the sticky.

I tried that too but it came back with nothing. I am pretty sure it is an issue with my operating system itself (Windows), so I'm taking it to one of my dad's colleagues tomorrow who does IT at my university to use the Windows disks to repair it. My dad was convinced that Symantec had something to do with it (it didn't) so he removed it anyway Laughing

Having audio problems with Chrome. Randomly, the audio for anything I open in Chrome does not work, and I have to reopen the browser for it to start working again...the audio for my VLC and Firefox browser works fine.

Anybody know what I can do to fix the problem?

Well Norton is a PoS, that's why they changed the brand name of their Anti-Vir, it got to the point where Norton didn't have any reputation left to salvage..

@Amar is it all audio or just flash-based audio?

I'm guessing flash based (its just Chrome), because all my other audio works fine at that time (VLC, Firefox)
