I guess it is my duty to set up a thread for Mitch Langerak, too Very Happy

Mitch Langerak Appreciation Thread 69422610

Name: Mitchell James Langerak
Birthdate: 22.08.1988 (in Emerald, Queensland)
Height: 192
Nationality: Australian

Clubs:
Melbourne Victory (2007-2010)
Borussia Dortmund (2010-2015)
VfB Stuttgart 2015-

Mitch Langerak is a pretty good young GK who played well in the few matches he was allowed to play for Dortmund. As he was Roman Weidenfeller's understudy, he unfortunately didn't have many chances to get first team action in Dortmund, but when he did he showed more than a little promise.

In 2015, he went to VfB Stuttgart, where he now will fight for the Nr.1 position with the Polish GK Przemysław Tytoń and German youngster Odisseas Vlachodimos.

He was already called up to the Australian NT in March 2011, but so far he didn't get a chance to play as at first with Mark Schwarzer, he had a highly experienced GK in front of him there, and then Mathew Ryan who is a regular starter at FC Brügge was prefered to Mitch, too.

Some more interesting facts about Langerak:

- He played for Melbourne Victory in the A-League (Australia) and won both the premiership and the cup in the 2008-09 season.

- He won the award for Australia's best professional Under-23 player in 2009-10.

- Dortmund made 2 offers to the Victory for Langerak before they accepted the 3rd (at a substantially increased price).

Well, and with Dortmund he can call himself German champion of 2010/11, even though he didn't play much yet. Quite some nice entries for his CV with the above! Very Happy

He's a really good player. Very impressed by him in Australia. One thing we produce consistently is goalkeepers. He could start in many European clubs I believe, but definitely a good 2nd keeper for Dortmund. I hope Weidenfeller moves on at some point and he can take over. I prefer him to Federici, who is also very good, and is Australia's 2nd goalkeeper, thought he is older.

- Mark Schwarzer will be 40 in October. Langerak is expected to take over, however Australia NT coach Holger Osieck (who was assistant coach to Franz Beckenbauer for the Germany national football team that won the 1990 World Cup) wants Langerak to play more as he is inclined to pick players who are getting regular game-time over more talented bench-warmers.

- Adam Federici (Reading) will be Mitchell's main competition for the Aus NT GK spot. Other NT Goalkeepers are Brad Jones (Liverpool), Nathan Coe (SønderjyskE, Denmark), Matthew Ryan (Central Coast Mariners) and Eugene Galeković (Adelaide United). Needless to say that Langerak is a level above the competition.

I kinda disagree that Federici is a level below... Federici is on the same level, he's just older and plays for a less prestigious club. He's been key for Reading's push to the EPL and is as good as other EPL keepers.

Well, I really hope that Kloppo will give Langerak some more first team action, but with 31 years of age, Roman Weidenfeller will likely stay in the Dortmund goal a while longer.

Hm... With the contract talks of the HSV with Adler being stalled, maybe he should try to contact the HSV to get a first team spot there?

Fair enough, although I meant a level below as an option for the NT rather than as a player. I'd try to support Langerak as much as possible if I was Osieck. He has so much potential to be a future cornerstone for the team and Dortmund, or wherever he goes.

I'd take him at Milan, better than Željko Kalac!

Yeah, I should post there more often. Especially since there's some serious stuff going down in the A-League at the moment - or should I say out of the league...? Wink

For the non-Australians in this thread, Victory = the  team of Australian football.

Who do you support dost?

Kalac in World Cup 2006 v Croatia will never be forgotten...

Still, he is a passionate Milan supporter and promotes the team a lot on TV, so he's alright. Cool

I have nothing against their fans (the majority of them anyway, every team has bad apples), but their team plays horrific football. If a MV player is not sent off in a game, the referee is not doing their job properly. The entire culture at the club promotes this disgusting playing style, highly influenced by former captain Kevin Muscat (once named the dirtiest player in the EPL I believe). An example is 'gladbach's Matthew Leckie, who was sidelined by a tackle for 8 weeks. Even worse is the tackle on Melbourne Heart's Zahra featured below...

Uh-oh, that doesn't sound (and look) good at all (that Victory club). Well, the better for Mitch that he is now in Dortmund where you can find a much better playing culture. ^^

Spider wasn't about goalkeeping guys :coffee:

He was about honour and being unexplainably awesome.

Also I'm still laughing at the soundtrack to that Muscat tackle. I actually used to support Victory when they were the only club in Melbourne, however I simply grew tired of supporting such a group of thugs. They never had the highest foul rate in the competition, however when they did get you they were just unjustifiably rough.

Melbourne Heart are the great team Melbourne deserves :coffee:

Mitch Langerak got a call-up by Holger Osieck for the squad of Australia for their matches against Denmark, Oman and Japan. It is questionable whether he will actually play, though, as Mark Schwarzer and Nathan Coe are also in the squad. I'd hope it for the boy, though.
