Yann Sommer was voted "Man of the Season 2013/14" of FC Basel 1893. As he was elected "Man of Match 28 times in this season (with 60 matches played), the result comes as no real surprise.

The new goalie who inherits the number 1 spot from Yann Sommer is Czech international Tomás Vaclík who joined Basel from Sparta Prag.

Yup. For once no nail-biting at nerve-wrecking qualifying matches Very Happy

(I saw Steaua managed a score draw at FK Aqtöbe - good luck for your return leg!)

Less activity on this topic without Sommer. Right? Smile
How will be Basel this season? I took a look on transfermarkt and saw that Basel has a cheaper squad - only 45 millions. Last season - 55+
I'm very disappointed with our jailed manager and owner who didn't wanted to invest the huge profit from last year - around 30 million euros. How about Basel? Are they investing  the profit from Champions League and transfers?

Well, Basel have started this season better than usual with 4 wins of 5 matches under the new coach Paul Sousa. (I'm updating the results at the 3rd post here).

And they will start right in the CL group stage, so no CL qualification this season.

BTW, Tomas Vaclik seems to be doing very well in the Basel goal.

Basel are usually scouting very well and seem to have unearthed some fresh new gems. Plus their youth kids (like Breel-Donald Embolo) seem to be doing very well. I guess they will be putting some money as reserve for the time they might not qualify for the CL as one never knows.

Well, with the new coach Paolo Sousa, FC Basel 1893 had their most successful start into the season for many years, so one can be curious how they will do in the CL this season.

BTW, Basel's Taulant Xhaka belonged to the Albanian NT that managed to defeat Portugal yesterday.

Additionally, Marco Streller retired from football after playing the last 8 years for FC Basel 1893 and 15 years as pro football player. He managed to score 200 goals in his career (the shirt he got before his last match didn't take into account that he would score in his farewell match, too) XD

FC Basel - Page 14 Empty Re: FC Basel

There is indeed a huge gap between Basel and the rest of the Super League clubs as they manage to get into the CL regularly and thus they earn much more money than any of the others. Sometimes it is said the small FCB is for the RSL very much like the big German FCB is for the Bundesliga.

Basel had the big luck that Gigi Oeri, the wife of the heir of the Basel-located pharma company Hofmann-LaRoche is a big fan of the club, and in 1999, she decided to sponsor them.

She invested around 20 million SFR over 12 years which put the club on a solid basis as first they bought players to get to the top and then build up a foundation (including a club academy) that producted top players who can be sold with good profit. (If you compare this to the investments by certain sheikhs or Russian oligarchs this is a joke, but Gigi Oeri invested wisely compared to them and got the most from her investment by Basel punching much over their weight in the EL and CL, too.)

Gigi Oeri was FC Basel's president from 2006 until 2012, but then she stepped down as she was sure the club could now stay on top on its own without further help.

It could be that Basel will get some competition from Young Boys Bern as their owner (Swiss entrepreneur Andy Rihs) announced he wanted to invest substantial money this year to buy good players. One has to wait and see whether he is as good a businessman as Gigi Oeri as the latter put her focus on turning Basel into a self-sustaining club.

Now that Basel proceeded after beating Lech Poznań in both legs, their opponents can be Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC (ISR), FK Partizan (SER), Malmö FF (SWE), KF Skënderbeu (ALB), or Astana (KAZ)

Of these options, Basel definitely wouldn't like meeting Maccabi Tel Aviv again as they already played against them twice (!) last season (in CL Quali and EL Last 32).
