Yes, he wasn't great at LB, but then again: every other fullback except Lahm has been just as bad, only Jansen had a couple of great games at LB, and he always left a lot to be desired while defending, basically he's the German Marcelo.

I still think moving Lahm to RB and playing Schmelzer at LB is our most defensively sound option. And it leaves us open to utilize Jansen on the left if we want more attacking prowess.

We really should push genetic engineering forward in Germany as we so need to clone Lahm. IMO Schmelzer just hasn't been convincing enough - so the current set up with Lahm at LB and either Höwedes or Boateng as RB might still be the best option so far.

I just like Lahm so much better at RB... Though it's not as bad for the NT as it is for Bayern.

Cloning Lahm might be the best idea for now. We could also use a younger Klose and Ballack... :X

Would like to see:

Neuer
Lahm Badstuber Hummels Aogo
Piggy Kroos
Ozil Muller Podolski
Gomez

But would also like to see both Bender's playing together. :o

Too much German talent. Didn't even add Gotze.

No Götze, no Reus, no Klose, no Bender, and Aogo at LB, picking a line up is way too hard.

What's wrong with Aogo?

Agreed with Gotze, probably could of added Reus in there too, but wanted Podolski + Ozil in the squad haha.

Was going to add both Bender's but Swein + Kroos are too boss.

Aogo was a liability in each of the NT matches he played. We really need to clone Lahm as fullback as all other options just didn't convince so far.

Aogo is defensively weak. The German Mehcelo, if you will.

He really ain't that much going forwards, either. I'm not really a fan but he's a good bench option.

We should've naturalized Alaba, he's Austrian, that's close enough...

I'm a fan of Schmelzer on one side and Lahm on the other I think it gives Germany the best chance.

Neuer
Lahm- Mertesacker (Based on injury recovery)- Hummels - Schmelzer
Schweinsteiger - Kroos
Mueller - Oezil - Reus
Klose

Bench: Wiese, ter Stergen, Aogo, Badstuber, Boateng, Khedira, Goetze, Podolski, Gomez

It's just too hard to choose a starting XI. I put Mertesacker over Badstuber for experience. I suppose Boateng could also play RB and we keep Lahm at LB too. Oh geez, I didn't even include a Bender on my bench bounce I still prefer Klose tyo Gomex at international level.

Unfortunately, this season Schmelzer had quite some gaffes as LB. I really wish this wasn't the case, but unfortunately he just is a liability recently, just like Aogo.

And BTW, I wouldn't use Hummels in the NT but put Badstuber there, for the simple reason that Badstuber plays the way Löw wants it (more secure in passing), while Hummels more often plays riskier balls as he is used to that at Dortmund where Kloppo expects him to play that way.

Posted this elsewhere, figured it fits in here better:

Players of the German NT and their clubs:

Bayern: Neuer, Badstuber, Boateng, Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Müller, Kroos, Gomez
Dortmund: Hummels, Götze, Reus*, Bender, (Schmelzer), (Großkreutz)
Arsenal: Mertesacker, Podolski*
Chelsea: (Marin)*
Real Madrid: Khedira, Özil
Stuttgart: Cacau
Lazio: Klose
Hannover: (Leno)
Hoffenheim?: (Wiese)*
Schalke: Höwedes, (Holtby) - Draxler is probably getting called up soon
Leverkusen: (Kießling), Rolfes, Schürrle, Bender

In Brackets: Only subs, if at all
* : Move decided, but hasn't happened yet

In a lineup like that, it really makes clubs like Schalke or Lazio sound "small", no more German NT players at 2nd rate clubs, no 2nd Bundesliga, no relegation fodder, no nothing. Good clubs through and through. Great prospect.

Only Leverkusen and Stuttgart kind of suck ATM, so those players should be divided up between Barca, ManU, Milan and Juve, obviously. :coffee:

Dortmund's Ilkay Gündogan should be there, too.

Bernd Leno is from Leverkusen and only plays U21 so far. I think you meant Hannover's Ron-Robert Zieler.

BTW, Mike Hanke from BMG might get back into the NT, too. And I think Marc-André ter Stegen might be called up in due time, too, even though he only plays U21 so far, too.

I think ter Stegen will be left with the U21 squad as long as it's permissable, just to let him get more experience.

And yes, of course I meant Zieler  - I'm really not the sharpest knife in the drawer these days...
Forgot Gündogan as well, and he is getting called up already.

Hanke getting back might happen, though I don't really think that he fits the German system.

Anyway, my point remains valid: Germans all playing in good clubs

Well, in the next season, ter Stegen can show what he's made of in the CL (well, I hope BMG will manage to get through the qualification), and I think that will be some really valuable experience for the boy that can only make him better.

And I want all the young GKs to develop greatly, but as far as the NT is considered, it won't matter all that much whether we have the almost-perfect Neuer or the almost-perfect ter Stegen in goal TBH, so I'm more interested in our field players at the moment.

I was interested in the GK debate way before the WC when I really didn't see how Neuer wasn't the first choice already. And the way he became the #1 you really can't be too happy about it. I'd probably rather not have Neuer in goal and have Enke live and Adlers carrier not in ruins. Sad

Well, I really agree that I would have prefered Robert Enke to be still alive and Rene Adler not having such a nasty spell of injuries, but frankly, I was already hoping for Manuel Neuer to be nominated for the Euro2008 instead of Rene Adler as I always thought him to show more promise.

As for the outfield players - I guess there we have the usual problems with lots of midfielders and to few proper strikers. ^^

Same for me with regards to Neuer, I always thought that Adler played too static, while he had world class reflexes, and still has them, probably, Neuer is just the king when it comes to command of the box, and in 9 out of 10 matches, that's just more important.

And our outfield players... Well, we keep converting our strikers to midfield forwards, we could have just groomed Müller and Schürrle as lone strikers a bit, as well, so it's not like we have zero players coming in that could play as proper strikers.

At the moment we really are spoiled by choice, except with fullbacks, and I don't envy Löw for having to choose. I'd really like for him to move Lahm back to RB, though.

Anyway, Schweinsteiger is set, so is Özil, but everything else... Khedira, I like, because I think you need a defensive anchor, but Löw seems fully willing and capable of playing with Schweinsteiger and Kroos as his two "DM"s, then you have the case of Müller, Schürrle, Götze, Podolski and a couple guys I'm probably forgetting ATM having only two spots to split up between them... I'm really losing the plot on how to best line up.

Well, striker-wise I really hope that Samed Yesil can fulfill the promise he showed at the U17 World Cup. I think he could become a fresh option for that position if he isn't converted to an attacking mid as well. ^^

And in the FB department we still should try to clone Lahm, it seems. It is such a pity that Alaba is Austrian. I wonder if Marcel Schmelzer could really manage to properly show up for the NT, but then Lahm would really have to play at RB again. As for the CBs, Löw really has to ponder how he can shuffle them best with Badstuber, Hummels, Mertesacker, Boaten and Höwedes all lined up - although the two latter have the advantage they can be used at RB, too.

I'm curious if Löw will call up Mike Hanke as Striker if he really calls up a 30 man team next week as the Bayern players will still be occupied for a while longer.

I'm quite pleased with our CB selection atm, I'm honestly fine with whoever out of Hummels, Höwedes, Badstuber, Boateng, Mertesacker plays, as long as they compliment each other.

What would've been funny, though, would have been playing Arne Friedrich and Boateng as the two CBs, if Friedrich hadn't gotten injured and never quite recovered. Two CBs that could outrun 9 out of 10 strikers out there would just be mean.
