England's best midfielder
Why has Carrick only ever been a bit part player for England? For a nation that lacks midfield creativity, organisation and passing ability, Carrick surely was the cure...
With managers favouring the likes of scott parker & gareth barry over him in tournaments, one can only wonder why?
Consider England's average midfield and carricks quality, is it not ridiculous that a 21 year old in Neymar has 10 more national caps then a 32 year old carrick?
When I look at spain whom is the example to follow, they have Busquets and Xabi Alonso.
Both are quite comparable to Carrick which is unusual as they aren't comparable amongst themselves but I won't go into why Carrick is good and what he brings to the table just that he is a blend between Busquets & Alonso.
Don't get me wrong, Busquets is carrick's superior but in a role what carrick has perfected for united and England's omission of the midfielder leads me to think what if England had Busquets & Alonso would they be left out too?

The Scots are really dominating the streets of London today.

Re: The Three Lions
Its odd to me too, I think Carrick is a very good player and its very easy to slot him into a team because what he does is easily replicated no matter his teammates.
To answer your question, why? It stems back to the classic English mentality about players, which old coaches with old ideas are comfortable sticking to. Carrick plays more like a European player than an English one in many ways.
In McClaren's time he often used some pathetic 451 in the qualification which contained Gerrard and Lampard with a holding midfielder. At the time IIRC Carrick was seen as a somewhat lightweight player who couldnt hold his own defensively. Hargreaves (fair enough) was chosen over him but also Barry.
With Capello, its his 4411 with Lampard and Barry in the middle...he assumed his very successful WC qualifying results justified his actions.
In the WC, it was proven that it did not justify his actions with some awful performances. The worse part here was Barry missed a game vs the US (promoting the laughable "Barry is so important for England" talk) and he still didnt go with the Carrick, but a proven failure of a Lampard and Gerrard midfield tandem. It didnt work almost a decade earlier in their primes..what made him think it would work now they are older I am not sure.
A successful 2012 Euro qualification, still almost totally without Carrick starting.
I find England almost unwatchable at times, so I am rarely up to date to what they are doing but I understand Carrick is used a bit more often with Hodgson?

What's weird, is that at United, Carrick is clearly superior to Cleverley, but at international level they seem oblivious to that.

Re: The Three Lions
You just know Hodgson will somehow squeeze Welbeck into the starting eleven.
If he has any sense, though, he''ll go with Rooney and Sturridge.
Don't like the look of that backline, though.
The U21 squad:
Goalkeepers: Jonathan Bond (Watford), Jack Butland (Stoke City), George Long (Sheffield United).
Defenders: Eric Dier (Sporting Lisbon), Ezekiel Fryers (Tottenham Hotspur), Todd Kane (Blackburn Rovers, loan from Chelsea), Michael Keane (Manchester United), Jack Robinson (Blackpool, loan from Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Southampton), John Stones (Everton), Tom Thorpe (Manchester United), Andre Wisdom (Liverpool).
Midfielders: Tom Carroll (Tottenham Hotspur), Nathaniel Chalobah (Chelsea), Will Hughes (Derby County), Nick Powell (Manchester United), Jonjo Shelvey (Swansea City), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton).
Wide: Sammy Ameobi (Newcastle United), Jesse Lingaard (Manchester United), Nathan Redmond (Norwich City), Wilfried Zaha (Manchester United).
Forwards: Saido Berahino (West Bromwich Albion), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Connor Wickham (Sunderland).
Those midfielders
Those forwards

Re: The Three Lions
No love for Stevie Me Jay?
Also i agree on CBs its clearly the weakness at this point.
The most talented one of the lot is probably Phil Jones but i get the feeling Hodgson likes Cahill-Jagielka.
As for that U21 team..... The future is bright as far as midfielders go but dem forwards ffs

Re: The Three Lions
I'd rather young and new talent got given chances instead of Gerrard and Lampard picking up more caps. They can still offer something, of course, so I wouldn't mind too much if they were in the starting eleven.
Given that Wilshere is currently being handle with care, he probably won't play against Moldova unless we really need him to, so I'll suspect we'll see a Carrick/Cleverley/Gerrard midfield. At least we have that option now and instead of the likes of Barry and Parker.
It's a shame we can't call up Ferdinand anymore since we really are lacking a centre back of his quality. We can only hope that Smalling, Jones and Caulker come good.

He may have to play there so we can fit in an extra midfielder, though. Against Moldova we can safely play 4-4-2 but in the tougher games against Ukraine I really think we need three midfielders. For that reasons I'm expecting that Welbeck will play over Sturridge in that game.Sturridge playing LW will never work.

I raped prime Argentina with it as well
As for Milner he's lucky to be in the squad IMO, he's not been playing and there are younger players performing like Lallana and others.
Heck some of the ones in the U21 squad could easily displace him.

Re: The Three Lions
He's wasted on the wings.. his best position is in the center. The only player who can displace him when played there is Wilshere but he provides no defensive contribution and is still inexperienced at the international level. When you have sucky CBs like Cahill, Jagielka in the defense, you need guys like Milner in the midfield.
