Johan Cruyff: The Creator

The 23 players from the Dutch football team, who are stationed in Poland for the UEFA Euro 2012, pooled in money to set up a Johan Cruyff football court in Primary School 93 in Bronowice, Krakow. Radio Netherlands reports that “high-rise concrete buildings abound and so do children apparently [in Bronowice]. There are 6,000 of them, who have to make do with just three playgrounds.” But thanks to a fenced football pitch - 42mx28m – the kids now also have an artificial turf to play on. The official statement from the Holland squad said that it “wishes to leave a tangible legacy to the local community and offer children a safe spot close to home where they can play football.” And who better to name it after other than Holland and Barca football icon Johan Cruyff. The Orange Cruyff Court in Krakow is the 158th of its kind and the 22nd outside the Netherlands.

Netherlands kick off their Euro campaign in Kharkiv, Poland Ukraine facing Denmark on June 9.

Love the guy though Sandro doesn't. He has made an impact on the way Barcelona are doing view through their style of football. Yes, Pep Guardiola uses tika-taka and the possession game the best but who did he get from? Cryff and some other help as well through Bielsa and others.

For my money the greatest player of all time and the greatest footballing mind of all time too.
What made him the greatest(apart from his divine skills) was that he had the greatest footballing mind.
He did exactly the right thing 99% of the time on the field.The quote from him that sticks in my mind is when he said that a player only touches the ball for about 5 minutes in a match.So what he does off it is more important.
A total player who could and did play everywhere.I think Messi,who has kind of made famous the Cruyff position again can still learn a lot from watching Cruyff play.
The thing he needs to perfect is when to come looking for the ball.Right now he drops deep a bit too much in certain games when he really shouldnt.
Whereas Cruyff was a lot more smarter in this regard.Some games he wuld stay up throughout the game,rarely dropping deep or going to the left.He would play CF through and through.Other games he would drop a lot.In short he would do exactly as the game and opponent dictated.
Messi on the other hand always drops deep.I think once he learns to be a bit more smart about when to drop deep he can be even more effective.
Anyway I deviate.Cruyff the greatest.

Cruyff's new book "Football. My Philosophy" is set to come out on Nov 7th in Catalan and Spanish. Anyone know if it'll be released as an e-book or in English?

I'm glad Cruyff is really appreciated here and in Catalonia. Sadly he is not that well received back home due to the controversial statements he walways makes. A lot of Ajax fans lost faith in him after the whole board room fiasco and the alleged racial abuse of Edgar Davids.


Only Rinus Michels has a had a bigger impact than Cruijff in modern football. Watching Barcelona play remidned me of the glory days with Louis van Gaal. I feel priviledged to watch this era. Enjoy this team while it lasts, if I had known that our dream team would break up due to the bosman, I would have appreciated it more.

Very true on appreciating the ride because it inevitably will end or at least it won't be able to maintain this sort of hegemony indefinitely...Fortunately, the cantera is solid from top to bottom and should continue to churn out talent

It must also be said that his cockyness, which has gained him many enemies, has prevented him from winning more than he already has. For example before the CL final that we lost 4-0 there was an overabundant feeling that we had won before playing the match, which is not to say that was the only reason we lost, but it certainly wasn't the proper way to prepare for a final. Had he had Pep's humbleness I'm sure he could've achieved more.

Makes Pep even more special, doesn't it?...Pepism, it's my religion
