Netherlands Players Subjected To Racial Abuse

Post by Amar on Thu Jun 07, 2012 10:21 pm

Euro 2012 was plunged into its first racism controversy after the black players in the Holland squad were subjected to monkey chants during an open practice session in the same city where England will also invite the public to watch them train on Friday.

Several hundred people targeted players such as Nigel de Jong and Gregory van der Wiel when 25,000 spectators attended the Dutch practice session at the Stadion Miejski, the home of Wisla Krakow.

The players, on the instructions of the captain, Mark van Bommel, responded by moving their training drills to the other side of the ground. "It is a real disgrace especially after getting back from Auschwitz [the Dutch squad had visited the concentration camp on Wednesday] that you are confronted with this," Van Bommel said. "We will take it up with Uefa and if it happens at a match we will talk to the referee and ask him to take us off the field."

The problems occurred as the players began the session by jogging a lap of the pitch only to be greeted at one end of the stadium with monkey noises and loud jeers. On the second circuit, they were even louder and it was then the players decided not to go around again. "At least now we know what we can encounter," the Holland coach, Bert van Marwijk, said with heavy cynicism. "Very atmospheric."

Uefa subsequently tried to deny that it was racially motivated, saying they had checked with the Dutch squad and had been told it was not thought to be of that nature. Instead, the official line is that a small part of the crowd was protesting about the fact that Krakow had not been made one of the host cities. Another theory that has been put forward is that Wisla's supporters did not want their stadium being used by anyone but their own club and were simply booing the Dutch players.

Van Bommel, however, responded angrily when it was put to him not everyone had heard monkey noises. "You need to open your ears," he said. "If you did hear it, and don't want to hear it, that is even worse."

Privately, the midfielder is understood to be unhappy that the authorities are not treating the issue more seriously, but the incident is still threatening to be a major embarrassment for Uefa, coming before a ball has even been kicked, and will increase the scrutiny on Poland's supporters when the tournament opens with the co-hosts playing Greece in Warsaw on Friday.

The Polish authorities have been eager to dispel the sense that the backdrop to this tournament will have racism at its centre, and the country's prime minister, Donald Tusk, went through an elaborate public relations exercise on Thursday to drive home the point. Tusk was accompanied by a television crew on a 90-mile journey to Lodz to dine with Poland's first black parliamentarian, John Godson, and his family, including relatives who had flown in from Nigeria. The idea was to show the improvements both in Poland's road network and acceptance of different races.

Godson criticised the BBC Panorama documentary Euro 2012: Stadiums of Hate that had warned racism would be rife. He argued that Poland was a "hospitable and tolerant country" while Tusk wore a badge that said "Welcome" and said he was convinced there would be no problems: "I very warmly invite all English people. You will definitely not encounter anything unpleasant here."

Panorama had focused on the racist elements in the support of Krakow's two major clubs, Wisla and Cracovia, as well as highlighting the seriousness of the problem in Ukraine. Michel Platini, the Uefa president, has subsequently said the referees have been empowered to take teams off the pitch if there are serious issues – but added that any player who walked off without permission would be booked.

The families of two of England's black players, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott, have already decided against travelling to the tournament because of the potential problems. England are based in Krakow, along with the Netherlands and Italy squads, and will allow the public to watch Friday's practice session at Hutnik stadium on the outskirts of the city.

ffs, already started at training sessions for god's sake. If this is happening in one of their biggest cities in training sessions, I can't imagine what's going to happen at the games. The racism issue in Poland/Ukraine has been discussed extensively already, but thought I'd post this anyways

There are very few non-white players this time, rookies like Narsingh & 18 year old LB Jetro Willems.

I feel really sad for a guy like Willems making his debut & having to go through this

You know that this is actually more about the frustration that Krakow wasn't chosen as a venue to play proper matches? Of course the people who want to cause an upset will use the easiest thing to get people riled up, just shout racist garbage as they know that will make the best headlines.

(That was why I already stated that Balotelli's threat to just leave the pitch was the dumbest thing he could say - now people know they just need to should racist insults at him to possibly cause the abortion of the match  )

I think the proper way to deal with that would have been to simply throw out idiots from the stadium if they show off as idiots and possibly put them to jail for a while to cool them down, but not give them a huge stage by publishing it in huge, bold letter everywhere. After all, that gives them even more power.

rwo, I think your giving these morons a bit too much credit. I dont think they are shouting racist abuse because they upset about something else...I think they shouting racist abuse because...they racist.

Its easy to say, throw them out the stadium...but clearly the people in charge have not done that to this point in that country, so its not happening.

I find nothing wrong with Balo saying he would leave the pitch. I dont think he should have to stay on and accept it when nobody is willing to do anything about it.

Sure, if measures are being taken then great. But if they arent (which is looking like the way its going to be right now) then by all means I agree with Balotelli on that.

Actually there was a lengthy report on Poland and how Polish people view the Euro in their country here on TV, and there seems to be a huge rivalry between Krakow and Warsaw (I hope I got that right), and the fans at Krakow were really p*ssed off that they didn't get any matches. So it is very likely that the ultras of Krakow would try anything to disrupt the Euro to get back at the organisation team.

The problem is with all the media hype and threats to abandon matches for shows of racism, anyone can actually hold the Euro hostage with that by just sputtering around racist garbage no matter the motives.

That doesn't explain why they chose to vent their frustration via obviously racist monkey noises, though.

UEFA is behaving more and more like an evil regime straight out of 1984 or Brave New World with their ridiculous denials.

Then again, what is all the fuss about? Players like Balotelli should just take Blatters advice, and shake the racists' hands after the match, and it'll all be fine :p

Its a disgrace anyway. You cant justify this bulls***. Poland & Ukraine should not have got this tournament,I doubt if bribes are involved in all this.

How can you justify an 18 year old LB playing his 1st major tournament for his country & who has played 0 Official matches being racially abused, selected & abused with monkey signs.

I would say the same even if say Goetze was black & he was singled out & racially abused. Willems,The guy is 18,he probably has never been against something like this in a big tournament,he came with high hopes of representing his country.

Netherlands have decided to donate their match bonuses to set up playgrounds in Poland with assistance from Cryuff & they visited the concentration camp to pay their respects(as did the German team).

This is what an 18 year old boy gets in return from fans. Wow. What garbage behaviour

My suspicion is they use racist shouts as that's what the UEFA wants to curb most and because they can be sure it will cause both the biggest possible upset and greatest reaction.

IMO they should try to catch those idiots quietly and fine them / jail them, but not put it all over the press as exactly that is what they want to achieve.

The thing is that no logical thinking non-racist human being would even think of acting like a racist on the sole purpose of creating the "biggest possible upset and greatest reaction". The fact that you can actually stand there, a couple of meters away from players with a different color and chant horrible stuff about their appearance is not something anyone who is against racism would consider to be even an option. This means that these people are all extremely retarded or simply just racists.

I was thinking of low-life from the calibre of hooligans who just set up meetings with opponent hooligans to beat the stuffing out of each other. No logical thinking person would do that either.

Did I say All of Poland was racist? If so please point it out. Otherwise settle down and actually read the comments.

One poster suggested that what happened at the Dutch training session was no different from what happens in Spain and Italy. I pointed out that, rather than being a handful of fans like it is in those nations, it was 200+ people doing this AT A TRAINING SESSION. Take a deep breath and count to 10, white_star, don't get yourself into trouble.

Wow, the high horse riding is getting ridiculous, as a black person living in Britain, it disgusts me to see programs like panarama castigating other countries whilst very same problems are still prevalent in tbe UK. The media does a very good job at ignoring stories of racist abuse which takes place mainly outside, but also inside the grounds. Back in 2007 Jason Scotland, then of St Johnston, suffered racist abuse in a game against my local club Motherwell. I happened to be sitting close to the numpties who were hurling out the abuse and i can say i have never felt so unsafe in my life. I can a sure it was more then a "few handful" of fans doing this, it was closer to 100.

The stewards and some police just came up telling the guys to stop, but didnt arrest one of them. Most likely because they were outnumbered easily. Only one person to my knowledge was ever jailed for this, and it i it was because he was a season ticket holder and was known, the rest? One-timers.

This is just the reported incidents
