Official Europa League thread!

Post by Red Alert on Fri Jul 27, 2012 4:05 pm

Rodgers has said that "if you're in it - you play to win it" or somewhere along those lines.

We face Gomel in the third qualifying round and to get into the groups!

[quote]
Liverpool will face FC Gomel in the Europa League third qualifying round after the Belarusian side edged past FK Renova on Thursday night.

Gomel led 2-0 after the first leg of the second qualifying round but Renova threatened to take the fixture to extra-time when they took the lead in the return leg. Gomel held on to clinch a 2-1 aggregate win.

Managed by Oleg Kubarev, they finished third in the Belarusian Premier League last year and play their football at Central Stadion in Gomel, Belarus which has a capacity of 14,307.

The first leg of the tie against Liverpool will take place in Gomel on August 2 and will kick off at 7pm BST (9pm local time). The second leg will be held at Anfield on August 9 and the match will start at 8.05pm BST.

The likes of Sterling, Suso, Pacheco and perhaps that Sama lad [though most likely Agger / Skrtel] will play to impress.

Do the England boys [and Borini] come back for this game? We NEED to get through, and don't think we'll get that edge playing the likes of Eccleston etc...

On a side note, Aquilani will be in the squad!

yeah I'm pretty sure BR will use Borini and the English boys for this game.

Only Reina, Suarez, and Coates will not be available to be called upon.

I've never heard of Gomel before, I doubt they will give us many problems.

Why hasn't Reina come back yet?

And although I've never heard of Gomel either, we cannot simply underestimate the team.

Because of winning Euros with Spain, Reina's 4 week vacation started later than most of our squad, so he's on holidays until we return to Melwood from the American tour.

PS. Since Italy made the finals, Borini was given the same choice as Reina to take 4 weeks off but he wanted to get to know the squad and what not Thumbs up

Yeah but the Europa game is after the US tour?

How long ago was the Euros? He doesn't need that much of a break... he didn't even play.

Yeah, Borini is a class act for that - Reina should of did the same to impress Rodgers. Could of used him in these games also, as I have no faith in our back-up keepers. They all look awkward in goal. pale

Yes the Europa game is after the US tour but Reina hasn't been training for the past 4 weeks and I'm sure Rodgers wouldn't want to use someone who isn't 100% fit.

Well I think the holiday is deserved since he was still training hard with Spain during the Euros while the rest of the team were having their holidays.

Reina will most likely play the second leg back at Anfield though.

It's a lot more easier being fit for a keeper than let's say someone like Gerrard in the middle. [Speaking of which do the English players feature against Spurs?]

Even unfit, he's a better stopper, sweeper and leader than our other keepers also.

But the friendlies don't matter at all, so it's a good chance for the back-up and reserve team keepers to get some time to show what they can do and get experience with the main squad.

You asked why Reina wasn't with the squad now, like Borini is, and went on to say you wanted him to play as you had no faith in the back-ups (one of whom got us to the FA Cup final, remember). I made the assumption you were talking about the friendlies for the tour. Apologies for the misunderstanding.

Saw how Bilbao suffered last year in the league because of Europa and a lack of depth, hoping the same doesn't happen to Liverpool.I think it's a competition worth winning just not sure if it's the best idea to push hard for it considering a relative lack of depth.

Group stages could provide some great experience for Shelvey , Henderson and youth, so I hope they at least make it there, which they logically should.

I'm confident we'll play a stronger and more consistent side for the tie against Gomel than we have in the past few friendlies. I wouldn't say the American tour was a joke, but it certainly wasn't setup to display the real quality of the squad. Unfortunately, this is the price we pay for having so many players involved in the Euros.

I'd honestly be fairly content with playing Brad Jones in goal for the first leg of the tie. He's seemed to be the better adjust of the two keepers on the tour. With Doni not traveling, it's hard to see him coming straight in to start. Reina has a shot at the Anfield leg of the tie, but likely won't be first choice right after coming back from holiday.

All the British contingent of the squad should be fit(ish) and ready for at least some action in the first leg of the tie. I sincerely hope we start Carroll and Borini, because we've shown a decided lack of a cutting edge so far this preseason. We simply cannot afford to underestimate any opponent when we can't take our chances. I REALLY like what I've seen from Adam Morgan, but he's still a year or so away from being a reliable squad player. (However, it will be a crime if Eccleston starts over him against Tottenham today... I don't care if we're trying to sell him. I want to beat Spuds, even if it isn't a competitive fixture.)

The midfield in the first leg of the tie is an absolute toss-up for me. My only two conditions are Shelvey should start and Lucas should get an appearance (for match fitness). Beyond that, I think Spearing might benefit from the start; Aquilani could use the familiarity with the squad; Adam hasn't looked bad in a three-man midfield; and Hendo could use the chance to get match-fit and get a look-in under Rodgers. I can't really see a stand-out combination for this particular situation.

I would love to see Agger and Skrtel start, but I think we may see a combination of either Agger or Skrtel and a youngster (Sama, Wisdom, Kelly, or Wilson). At fullback, I'd love to see Flanno get a start. He's looked great under Rodgers, and I think he's going to flourish in a more free-flowing, attacking role. Enrique could probably use the chance to get a bit of form going in a competitive fixture, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to experiment with potential option for cover at LB. Wilson and Robbo (if fit), could get a shout in this one.

My starting lineup for the first leg against Gomel would probably be something on the order of:
----------Carroll
---Borini---------Pacheco/Sterling
------Shelvey-Aquilani
---------Spearing
Wilson-Agger-Skrtel-Flanno
-----------Jones
Subs:
Hendo
Lucas - In for Spearing
Morgan - In for Carroll/Borini
Pacheco/Sterling
Wisdom - In for Agger/Skrtel
Gulacsi

Seems to be strong enough not to take Gomel for granted, but also doesn't risk too many of the critical players before the season really gets going.

I'm not really afraid of getting Anzhi but you never know with us. Eto'o could have one of his career nights, surprise us all and get us knocked out. I actually want to win EL Very Happy

Most likely this fixture would come between our game in Anfield with City . . three games in 7 days . . Hearts (Away), City (Home) & Hearts (Home) . . . would be a little telling scratch

This is were squad depth would come in BIG TIME! !

Lucky it's only Hearts then.

Likes of Sterling and Suso could be involved, with us playing the strongest team possible for Man City.
