That moment where the most you can hope for at home against a relegation foddler is a goal Laughing

Laughing Sterling lost the ball everytime he touched in the second half. This clown doesn't deserve to start for our reserves and he's starting for the first team Laughing

Rodgers was way too cocky before this game. Shit attitude to go into a game with "Okai"

I don't really watch Liverpool too much, but from what I've seen of Sterling, he's not good enough to start for the first team. He's a bench player at best.

Sahin should be starting in his preferred position alongside Lucas. He's better than Allen regardless of how well or bad Allen has done this season.

I also think Gerrard should be a bench player. Liverpool need a new line of '3' in terms of the 4-2-3-1 formation.

Blame falls on many people for the performance today.

I can't understand what goes on through Brendan Rodger's mind sometimes. Is Enrique injured? Even if he isn't, when we have someone like Jack Robinson available, why do we continue to play Downing in the left back position?

His love for Joe Allen is ridiculous as well. We've criticized other managers in the past for continuously playing players who are not performing. The same should hold true for Brendan. Allen doesn't seem to be doing as well as he did at the beginning of the season. And with the likes of him and Gerrard under performing, Lucas can't handle all the defensive duties.

Sterling. He has got talent, but he seems to be going down the same road as Insua. Being over-played and getting no time to learn from his mistakes.

When we have a striker in the form of Adam Morgan, why aren't we giving him a chance? We continue to play ineffective Downing, Cole, etc.

What has happened to Assaidi and Sahin? The former has generally put in great performances in the EL. I cannot fathom his exclusion entirely from the PL.

Gerrard has looked past it this season. Barely any goals, but more importantly, his passing ability seems to have disappeared. Gives up the ball way too easily.

I know we were screaming for wingers who could beat their defenders and we do have some. However always trying to nutmeg the defender or go around them is useless. Our ideas up front are terrible. No creativity. We constantly make things soooo hard.

I'm just getting tired of it. We are a mid-table club. I know some supporters will strongly disagree. But I believe we are. And this is not a knee-jerk reaction either. Rodgers' style of play has made a few improvements here and there, but for the most part we're still making the same mistakes.

Oh well, hopefully we do better next weekend.

Welcome back mate!

I watched the game, and i thought i was watching Liverpool under Dalglish. I really can't say liverpool were bad in the 1st half. It should have been 4-0 to liverpool without exaggerating. The football was pretty fantastic with good movement and passing and Aston Villa were really lucky on numerous occasion.

2nd half was a different story.

I was out in town and missed the game, expected to come back to read about a hard-fought win or something like that, but to see we lost 1 - 3 to a team that had scored 4 away goals prior to this match... Hard to grasp that.

It would be fine if this was just a rare shock, but with the way we are performing this season, it's hard to say which are the surprising results: the really bad or really good ones? For Liverpool, good results should be the norm and bad ones merely wake-up calls, but that bell seems to be ringing constantly now.

Among the most worrying things is that we are talking about what reinforcements we should buy, but if we indeed get stuck to these places around 10th, it will get more likely that our better players want to transfer to better performing clubs. I mean, just put yourself in Suarez's boots, the guy is world-class and in the peak of his career, will he not get the desire to move on if our project fails?

I think it was Arquitecto who asked me a few weeks back would I still take Paul Lambert ahead of Brendan Rodgers as our manager. Well.

& i will give you only two . . .

Enrique is fit for the next game.

We are just one proper striker away from hitting the ground running. Just one proper CF. That for me is severe improvement cause i believe the overall play has been phenomenal. Just a proper goalscorer & we are back in business. So does narrow down a lot of things.

Now to be honest I can give you a million reasons to be optimistic but am really not the right person to do so. I would appreciate it if Red-O steps up here. The reason behind me not being the right person is i am just a dumb ass down to earth foolish blind fan of Liverpool. I personally don't need much reason to be optimistic its just the small details. I don't know if anyone has followed my posts to re-call that i have been consistently single minded in supporting the BR Campaign.

So, i think i am really not the right person to explain things. . but i hope others would step up with more reason as i don't need much to be optimistic.

Because just as there's more to look at in each game than goals, there's more to look at in each season than results. If you honestly would rather be where the club was two years ago because they finished higher in the table, I'd be shocked. You'd trade a younger side, with strong-looking players coming up through the ranks and a stable financial position for a team that scored most of its goals down the stretch from a patch of good form from two 30-somethings (Kuyt and Maxi)? For a team that just had three managers employed in the span of twelve months? For a team that just spent 35 mil on an injured player, who had yet to look like he would come good?

Results are obviously the goal, but they are not the entire process. We absolutely dominated Villa in that first half, and lost due to a few defensive lapses and a really poor day in front of the net. There was some excellent last ditch defending, and by my count 4 penalty shouts turned down (1 correctly, again by my count). Is conceding three times to one of the worst away sides in the league embarrassing? Of course. Does it mean we're a poor team, miles away from where we need to be? It does not.

Harry Redknapp's post in the other thread was spot on when he said that it's shocking to see the difference one game can make in the minds of some people. Even including the Villa game, were on a good run of form and have been very difficult to beat. Each game has included some lapses either in front of goal or in defense, and on very rare occasions both, but as time goes on and a few new players are brought in, we'll start putting the elite offensive side of the game in the same match as the elite defense, and you're gonna see some dominant performances.

THERE'S your reasons for optimism. Try and look beyond our spot in the table to the greater project, and you might see why the rest of us aren't fearing the apocalypse.

This isn't about the players for me, of course I am happy that we've got some promising youngsters coming through.

Saying thing like "Does it [this defeat] mean we're a poor team, miles away from where we need to be? It does not." would work if this was just a rare bad result, but it's 17 games into the season and these disappointing results just keep on coming.

Moreover, I think I've been pretty consistant in my attitude and judgement about our on-going campaign.

I've still got hope, but the longer we fail to deliver the less likely it will become that we'll have a satisfactory season.

This is precisely what I'm responding to. It's not all about the results. You're right, we're probably not going to finish as high up the table as befits LFC. That's something everyone should be disappointed about, and I think we've shown how we feel about results with our conversations about top 4 last week. But it's also something most of us have known since the summer, and as such isn't the way I define success or failure this year.

I guess I should have phrased my question as "does ANY defeat, or series of defeats, mean we're a poor team, miles from where we need to be?" Because even THAT doesn't tell me anything unless I'm watching the games and seeing poor football - and I'm not. It's the difference between most of the posters in this section and the people in the general section, and is probably the reason we're considered illogical/delusional/insert negative adjective. The average Milan fan is not watching Liverpool week-in, week-out, and they look at the table and think "wow, Liverpool are really terrible, they're trending downwards and have no hope." I watch Liverpool week-in, week-out, and look at the table and think "wow, that doesn't reflect the quality of play I've been seeing. Maybe with some tweaks here and there and a couple of new players in, the results will start reflecting the quality that I see every single week."

Well, that's a fair point and that's what I remain hopeful about, but it has to start happening rather sooner than later. Our team hasn't changed so much that it would be acceptable to waste a complete season on "a new project" that brings us no improvement compared to last season or indeed makes our results worse. Our results must improve by the end of the season or I will remain at least as critical as I am now.

Players are adapting to the new system and we're bleeding in youth. We're in for the long term. We've been the better side in majority of our performances this season, the results will come. The mentality of the players has changed since Rodgers has been here and we'll only get better after January when we sign a couple of players to play in the final third.

At the end of the day it was a poor display against Villa. We really should of taken the 3 points. We can still finish in a greater position than last season. We have a couple of "easy" games coming up (I am aware Villa was easy too but can't see players getting complacent in the next couple of weeks.)

really painful to see that the exact same villa side were thrashed 8-0 by chelsea, off course it is not directly comparable but still....
Anyway, our 1-3 loss to Villa surely gave massive learnings to BR and co.

Chelsea just poured some salt on our wounds. Seems like Villa just came to play against us and forgot they were footballers today. I hate teams like these that play amazingly against one big team and then roll over for another.

The first goal was important.

If we scored in the opening 30 minutes we would of beat them comfortably aswell. We lost because of ourselves rather than Aston Villa performing. It was still a great performance by Benteke but I think we should let this thread die out...
