Messiah "Aggerswagger" wrote:Villa spent 20+ mill on Bent . We should thank Houllier for that, he perpetrated Villa and made them mediocre after they finished above us in 09-10.
But Bent's signing was a considerable success and did serve its purpose imo.
Villa would have been relegated had it not been for Bent's goals that season imo

Ya but if it was a different striker they spent big money on. He could have scored goals too to help keep them up and also be good for the long term.

Stepping down to allow Bradford a chance in Europe
Will they get it if they lose in the final to a CL team like Chelsea? Or will a spot in the league open up?

If Chelsea win the COC and finish above 6th then the 6th spot in the league will open up for EL. Which is why I'm rooting for Chelsea to win the cup, so we'll have a higher chance of playing in Europe.
Same with FA Cup, if we don't win it, hopefully it's a big club 6th or above that wins it because it'll open the 7th spot for EL as well.

Re: Paul Lambert Deprecia...Appreciation Thread.
Tbf to Art..... Lambert has been forced to used kids all season and in comparison Rodgers has some quality players to work with.
I'm pretty certain Lambert would do better at Liverpool than he has at Villa and i'm also pretty certain Rodgers would struggle a lot more at Villa than he has at Pool.
Ok its pretty embarrassing for them to lose to Bradford but talking about everything as a whole you have to talk about it on equal terms.
I can see Lambert doing some good things which in the long term will come good for Villa but i worry for him that he will be sacked before the positives come to light.
Anyway carry on

Then again, if they had held on to win, we'd be clear by more than goal differential.Fahim89 wrote:LAMBERT! LAMBERT! LAMBERT! LAMBERT!

That said, Villa still did us a nice favor today. With West Brom's next few fixtures (EFC away, THFC home, and LFC away), they really needed 3 points from today.

It's a sh*t squad but I concede that Lambert hasn't got anything out of it. But there are still 15 games left in the season.

Aston Villa is one point above the drop zone, there are 15 games left, and there are 6 teams that currently look to be included in the relegation dogfight:Art Morte wrote:It's a sh*t squad but I concede that Lambert hasn't got anything out of it. But there are still 15 games left in the season.
Southampton (23)
Newcastle (21)
Villa (20)
Reading (19)
Wigan (19)
QPR (15)
Reading have been on a little bit of a surge, Southampton have proven tough to beat in through a tough run of fixtures, Newcastle have recently bolstered their squad, and Wigan's late charges out of the relegation spots have become a fixture of the second half of the season.
There have only been 3 managerial changes this season (and only one warranted). I think you'd be hard-pressed to say that this would be an unwarranted change, should Villa decide to sack Lambert. You could disagree with the move, but this isn't a situation similar to Roberto Di Matteo's or a Nigel Atkins's. They have been quite poor all season, with few signs of immediate improvement.
Therefore, should Villa sack Lambert now in an attempt to stave off relegation? Remember, there's more here to think about than whether you rate Lambert or not. The biggest consideration should be who comes in to replace him. This isn't a situation where you can withstand an interim manager for a spell. They would need a replacement in posthaste. The other big consideration is the effect it would have on the squad. It's a very young squad and Lambert was instrumental in bringing in many of them or giving them a run. It's not as if removing Lambert would give an instant lift (as removing Hodgson did for us). It would likely have the opposite effect for most of the squad, barring Darren Bent.
My personal feeling is that I'm not certain a better option could be brought in, and a change might do more to hurt the squad's performance than lift it. Therefore, while I think that Lambert's management, tactics and record for the club might warrant a change, that change may not be the best move. Perhaps Villa might just be better off riding out the storm and reassessing in the summer.

Re: Paul Lambert Deprecia...Appreciation Thread.
Actually, the "New Manager Bump" has been pretty well documented as a real thing... so even with Lambert's hand in putting the current Villa first team into place as it is there's solid evidence to suggest that bringing in a new manager to replace him would still cause a short-term boost in form and results. Right now, Villa could do with going back to basics and making themselves hard to beat. They're offering opposing teams clear chances with alarming regularity. Unfortunately, they don't really have the time to put a defensive base in place and then work to add goals at this point. They really are in a bad, bad position.

That underrated genius who buys scrubs and sets them up to get Chelsea double red-carded while claiming the three points, what a legend
