Nacho Monreal
Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that Spanish international defender Nacho Monreal has agreed to join the Gunners on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.
Monreal (26), who will join Arsenal from Spanish La Liga side Malaga, is predominantly a left full-back and has represented his country Spain at youth level, Under-21s and has made nine appearances for the national team.
Full name Ignacio Monreal Eraso, but known as ‘Nacho’, the defender started his career with his hometown club Osasuna, where he progressed through the youth ranks to become a regular in the first team, making 127 appearances for the La Liga side. During that time he was an integral part of the team which reached the Europa League Semi-Final in 2007.
Monreal’s performances for Osasuna earned him recognition on the international stage, firstly with the Spanish under-21s, where he notably started all his country’s matches in the 2009 Under-21 European Championships, and later became a full international, making his debut for Spain in a friendly win over Macedonia in August 2009.
In June 2011, Monreal signed for Malaga, where he was a regular in the team, alongside Santi Cazorla, which finished fourth in the La Liga, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. Monreal made a total of 45 appearances during his time with the southern Spanish side.
Manager Arsène Wenger said: “We are delighted that Nacho Monreal has agreed to join us. We have been monitoring him for some time now and are really pleased that we’ve been able to agree this move today. Monreal is a strong left-sided defender with good experience at both club and international level. He is a technically gifted player, a good crosser in the final third and strong in the air. Monreal will add quality to our squad and of course, to our defensive unit. We all look forward to him playing for us.”
The deal is subject to the completion of formal registration processes.

Re: Nacho Monreal
No more Andre Santos at LB.
Putting aside the fact that we would not have signed Monreal today had Gibbs not gotten injured, I'm happy we got someone in, in the end. He's looked a decent play whenever I've seen him and provided he adapts and all that, he should provide very good competition for Gibbs.
It's a little tough on Gibbs, because he's been playing so well, but he's so injury prone that we, unfortunately, can't rely on him to play the amount of games we need him to. It's important that we not only have good backup, but also an alternative that can genuinely challenge for the position.
Hopefully, Monreal can do that and forge a connection with Podolski quickly, because the partnership between Gibbs and Podolski this season has been important from both a defensive and offensive point of view.

Re: Nacho Monreal
Ever since I heard about Malaga's financial problems, always wanted Natxo and Isco (oh well) in our team and I'm happy one of them joined us.
Extremely happy about this signing, he will definitely challenge Gibbs for the LB spot - someone can say 'Gibbs has been great' and it's true but that's how the big clubs work, you'll have competition. So far Gibbs' only competition was Andre freakin' Santos who's simply not good enough to challenge him. I believe this competition will make Gibbs even a better footballer and that's why I believe it'll be a good signing.
We might see him start against Stoke already

Re: Nacho Monreal
He can play as soon as all the paperwork is processed and he's cleared to play, which I expect should all be done tomorrow, if not tonight. He should definitely be available for Stoke, though whether he'll go straight in or not I don't know since he'll only have one training session with the team.

Re: Nacho Monreal
Going to a sports bar tonight after my last class with some friends. Going to order Nachos to celebrate
Definitely a needed signing since we can't just go on with 1 good injury-prone LB, although it is frustrating only to sign him. Let's just hope Ramsey, Diaby, Arteta, and Le Coq can figure out the defensive job in CM and our strikers keep their current form for the foreseeable future. Perhaps we can get an effective new style together, or perhaps we'll have a crazy summer of signings (unlikely). Either way, the crazy season is over. The race to the top 4 trophy is now as on as it's going to be. COYG.

Re: Nacho Monreal
everyone seems happy and content atleast not to see Santos at LB...
so Monreal is first choice material.. is he a defensive/offensive fullback ? any other position he can cover like LW or CB ?
we could occasionally play Giibbs as LWM whenever needed...

Re: Nacho Monreal
One of my good buddies tells me that he's exactly like Sagna. Good at holding the ball, really good aerially, and good defensive. Think of Sagna of 2 years ago at LB. He can play up also but is limited. He's apparently in my friend's opinion the 2nd left defensive left back in la liga after Filipe Luis. His crossing is above average. But think of him like Sagna but at LB.
