UCL Semi Final: Manchester City vs Real Madrid
I have been watching few City matches for now. They have now changed their tactics to suit the european game. They have developed a nice counter attacking game, especially for the CL in mind i think. Yaya Toure is back and he is probably unbenchable. That makes it bit difficult for pellegrini as he will have to accommodate all of Silva,Aguero,De Bruyne,Yaya Toure into the line up. They have their full strength back so they have plenty of options to choose from.
This is how i think they are going to line up. They will be playing a 4-4-1-1.
.............................................Hart
Sagna............Ottamendi............................Mangala...................Clichy
De Bruyne..............Fernando....................Fernandinho.................Silva
............................................Yaya
............................................................Aguero
and if they needs to score a goal they might go for this
.............................................Hart
Sagna............Ottamendi............................Mangala...................Clichy
Navas..............Yaya Toure....................Fernandinho.................Silva
............................................Debruyne
............................................................Aguero
Starting from the defense.
Hart
Decent shot stopper but prone to basic mistake. Bad on the ball, first preference to hoof the ball. Decent aerial game.
Sagna
There is a chance pellegrini may go for Zabaleta but judging from his choice against PSG it should be Sagna. Not good on the ball and can be easily pressured to turn overs. Very good defensively, especially one on one. I dont think Ronaldo has it to beat him.
Ottamendi
Poor mans Ramos, makes lot of 50-50 decisions. Prone to huge errors positionally. Lacks recovery pace but very hard to beat in the air and on static positions. Not an easy player to dribble as well. Huge threat in set piece situations. Very poor on the ball. IF CR moves in to become a striker then he is directly battling with ottamendi....considering the match up i do not think CR is going to have a decent game. He matches up terribly with both Sagna and Ottamendi
Mangala
Good defender.Jack of all trades. Does not make that much unforced errors. Poor on the ball.Very fast and pretty good one on one defender, Very good aerial game. Set piece threat.
Clichy
Both Kolarov and Clichy are poor defenders and Bale should get the better of them.
Silva
He will come inside. He will be playing almost as a midfielder than a winger so that Zidane will have to make a decision. To follow Silva with the RB or not to follow. It will be crucial decision.
Fernandinho-Fernando
Both likes to tackle. Both fast and good at ball recovery. Very physical and prone to lot of fouls. Both really poor on the ball. It will be extremely hard to play through the midfield since there are two really physical DMs. It is very crucial that our midfielders dont get dispossessed by tackles from these two as those are really good at slide tackles and initiates counter attacks.
De Bruyne
He might play as a CAM instead of Yaya , that depends on the line up. If all of fernandos and Yaya are playing then De bruyne will be shifted to RW.
Their most important player on counters. He is the one in charge to lead the counters. Rarely makes bad decisions and very dangerous on counters. Very bad match up with Marcelo. MVP.
YaYa
Casemiro will have a hard time coping with his physicality. He is going to be a pain in the ass for sure. Usually lazy but might give his all since this is probably his last chance at CL. Dangerous in set pieces as well.
Aguero
He moves to the left wing.To follow him or not to follow him with a CB will be the decision to make. Dangerous in counter attacks and around the box.
Mancity will go for 442 counter attack. I do not think their full backs will man mark, how ever they might change that for us to deny our wingers space.
This is how i think they are going to line up. They will be playing a 4-4-1-1.

Kompany wont change alot, Sterling will be a sub for sure.
Re: UCL Semi Final: Manchester City vs Real Madrid
You are giving the City players waaayy too much praise. Particularly Sagna and their 2 mudfielders. Sagna is bad offensively and tends to tuck in next to his CB when he is faced against a winger or LB. If he is that passive against us Marcelo will keep giving them crosses until one finally goes in
Casemiro pushed Ibra aside when we played them, he wont have a problem with Yaya. Modric and Kroos on the other hand will kick shadows until he reaches our penalty box and we all know what our block head of a CB will do then. Last time we played them ADM just waltzed past Yaya like he wasnt even there. We are likely to do that again. He is definitely their weakest link along with their other midfielders. Fernando is a turnover machine who cant even pass side ways properly. Fernandinho tends to silently get into opposition penalty boxes when City have the ball so we have to be careful of that
Silva/Sterling and Kolarov vs Carvajal and Bale We can safely assume that side will create like 90% of our chances
Marcelo has got to get into position quickly. We cant have him jogging back stretching our back line. Navas no matter how bad he is will have fun against Marcelo. Marcelo always struggles against out and out wingers. Wouldnt surprise me if Pelle put Sterling there to run at Marcelo with full speed.
Kun meh he doesnt scare him. The kind of selfish guy that tends to go for glory instead of passing to his team mates. Pepe and Ramos wont have a problem with him
KDB will be their biggest threat. Especially if he plays as an AM. We tend to leave alot of space in the middle between our CMs and CBs and he has a good long shot on him.
We are definitely not going to keep a clean sheet so we better score as many away goals as possible. Ibra was put through 1v1 like 3 times in the first game vs City. If they let Ronaldo through 3 times we will be 3-0 up and game over. I guess it depends on whether Pellegrini will go for a clean sheet or a win in the first leg. We are definitely going for a goal so they will get their chances

Re: UCL Semi Final: Manchester City vs Real Madrid
Looks like yaya will sit this one out and Navas will start. Good and bad. This means they won't be able to hold onto the ball as they would have liked. They becomes more counter attacking. That is the bad though, De Bruyne-Navas duo will create huge problems on the left side of our defense. Pretty sure Ronaldo won't track back start that injury scare so Marcelo will have his hands full this time. Navas is also committed in defense and Marcelo won't be able to become a huge factor in the game I think. We are going to have most of the ball so hope Pepe does not play.

Carvajal is back in training. Ronaldo did his own training while Benzema is still recovering.

Re: UCL Semi Final: Manchester City vs Real Madrid
I'm really nervous about this tie. Our entire season is hanging by a thread and we could either finish as European Champion or trophyless. This is when great managers make their mark and levitate above scrub killers. Z has two options here:
1. Either beat City, thus proving to everyone that it wasn't a lucky draw that got him here.
2. Or lose to City and prove his doubters right.
As far as City is concerned, I have already said that them being the dark horse terrifies me. Somehow in recent years, every time we drew the weakest team on paper in the semis, we always ended up losing.
I just hope our players won't get complacent against City like they did against Wolfsburg. We won't be able to come back if we fall two goals behind this time.

Re: UCL Semi Final: Manchester City vs Real Madrid
when you have a jekyll and hyde team like ours, where you don't know what kind of side will show up on the day, as well as the less than reliable defense, being nervous or worried is understandable. i mean we shouldn't have to have waited for cristiano's heroics in the second leg against wolfsburg....i just hope the defenders can maintain focus and discipline for 90 minutes, and that we can capitalize on counters....anytime we hold unto the ball or attempt possession plays, everyone on offense looks extremely clueless

Re: UCL Semi Final: Manchester City vs Real Madrid
I hope Man city try to play like a big team
If we play like Madrid, we should have no problem.
The problem I fink we have is who will replace benzema.
I personally think james should take his spot since he has a good shot on his left leg and could feed both ronaldo and Bale.
Any formation that takes Ronaldo away from the left wing is not good for us,w know he sucks as a centre forward.
But I suspect Z putting vasquez on the right with Ronaldo at the centre

Put Ramos as the CF. You know he'd love it and he couldn't do much damage there... and he'd be a threat in the air at least

Re: UCL Semi Final: Manchester City vs Real Madrid
...Since when is ManCity considered a big threat?
I expect us to crush them regardless of jekyll and hyde.
Pellegrini is an incompetent. If Zidane loses to pellegrini, he should consider going back to studying tactics 101.
Pellegrini teams are defensively weak. always. as long as our attack is strong, we will have no trouble.

That is as long as our attack is strong
We are not even sure if Ronaldo is truly fit
He could be feeling pains and hide that from the medical team because of his insatiable desire to score. If that is the case, expect him to stay centrally where he is almost useless.
Benzema is the gel that binds BBC together, he would either miss the match or be in less than optimum shape.
At full throttle, we will crush City, but in our present state, they are a threat.

Your mate Zidane says both are ready and fit.
We're winning this. I noticed in the media outlets hyping up mancity over madrid. Typical epl rubbish. Its high time Real Madrid remind the world media that the EPL will always lag behind La Liga. I trust we will remind mancity their place in football. Minuscule and small time.
Liverpool made short work of these losers. We will have a field day with this lot.
Re: UCL Semi Final: Manchester City vs Real Madrid
Dont be to confident. Lets tackle the game with humility.
As much as the players say they have learnt from their mistakes, we still see them repeating the same errors over and over again.
One thing i admire about Zidane's madrid is that the bigger the game, the better we perform, likewise Ronaldo.
We underrated Wolfsburg, and performed woefully, but when we needed a win at all cost, we came good.
The only way we win this is by treating them as a very serious threat.

Re: UCL Semi Final: Manchester City vs Real Madrid
Real Madrid has lost last 4 of the 5 semi final first legs. This stats really says alot about our last 7 years imo. Good enough to reach semi final every year but lacked the extra work needed to win those matches. Really hope we start and finish the game with same intensity this time.
Re: UCL Semi Final: Manchester City vs Real Madrid
Most of the first legs were away... you're facing elite teams in the semis so it's actually expected to lose. I think we faced Bayern x2, Barca and Juve. The only time we won was at Bayern.
I consider a draw away in the first leg in CL semis a very good result.

Re: UCL Semi Final: Manchester City vs Real Madrid
We lost against all those teams because we tried to play it safe and ended up being too careful to attack, but stil mediocre in defending. We never scored more than 1 goal in the first leg. One problem with being patient is that our players subconsciously equate it to making slow passes and transitions that can't disrupt the opponents shape.
So what's the point, attack the damn team and blow them away.

That is what hard work and determination can get you. After his horror showing against Espanyol very early in the season, Lucas is starting a UCL semis against City.
