Soton outplayed us. Pushed up against the front 3 giving them no space or time on the ball.

Allen ineffective. Lucas does both jobs alone better. Hendo doesnt deserve to be benched, Clear signs of favoritism by BR.

Obviously. Suarez is probably the best player in the league, he shouldn't be put into a less favourable position just because he's got the ability to play there. So frustrating to see him not being utilized to maximum effect.

Same here, would feel stupid to bet against us and don't need any extra excitement to our games by betting on our win.

Anyway, still about the game, it's been now two games in a row where we've started with "just" two CMs and it hasn't worked out for us, despite we won Tottenham. Surely Rodgers will start a different line-up / system in our next match...

We're a bunch of bottlers. Why is it every time we need to get a result and our confidence is "high" our players look like they don't want to be on the pitch and there's normally a tactical mistake?

Suarez is a lot more effective in the centre than he is on the left. Playing as a SS or false 9 gives the whole team more confidence as he's the centre of attention. Not too sure why he played on the left last night. Thought Rodgers would of learnt from the game from the Emirates. (Where Suarez was one of the best players on the pitch but the whole team looked to attack the left hand side all the time which became predictable.)

Skrtel coming back to the team is the only thing Rodgers got right last night. I have no idea why we decided to play a 2 man midfield WITHOUT a defensive midfielder against a team who's very good in possession. He also put on a player that is out for the season needing shoulder surgery where he had both Lucas AND Henderson available. You could see the difference from half time when Leiva came on the pitch. Unfortunately for us, Soton had all the confidence in the world to go on and control the game with 2-1 lead.

The whole team bar Jones was terrible mate. That includes Suarez, Gerrard, Sturridge, Allen, Enrique and Agger. Coutinho was the only one trying to get something out of the game in my eyes.

Downing was arguably probably MOTM behind Jones and Coutinho, lol.

On your first point on us being bottlers I personally have to disagree very strongly. But cannot disagree that some have always been ready to jump on BR on every small step he got wrong.

On Skrtel i am sorry to say he was utter rubbish yesterday. Not only for some of the goals but on some man marking also he was no where!!!

Lucas had a slight problem with a niggle of sort so BR had to start Allen. And can't blame him for not putting in Hendo instead of Allen cause logically he had to put in some sort of a DM. Sadly Allen was abysmal . .

Can't decide on MOTM cause overall the game was not nearly upto standard.

Skrtel likely has one foot out the door after that game. I honestly would be surprised to see him start anything besides cup games next season. HE's never looked completely comfortable in this system, and he has now forsaken some of his best qualities in years past: aerial dominance, closing down forwards, and overall physical play. He's now becoming a shell of the player that won player of the season last year. I'm beginning to think that he owes quite a lot to Steve Clarke's tutelage.

BR wanted to rest Lucas for fitness and so as not to further aggravate that "niggle". It's pretty obvious that BR sees Allen as the most suited to take over the DM role. I simply don't think that Allen has the work-rate/understanding with Gerrard to make a two-man midfield work. They have shown a burgeoning understanding in a 3 (against Tottenham, where the main goal was simply to keep the ball). However, the dynamic is completely different in a 2. With Carragher and Reina also out, we lost all 3 of our defensive organizers. There was no leader in the defense, and it was painfully obvious.

Not everything can be blamed on the defense. Coutinho could've put us level in the first half had he converted the one-on-one with Boruc. For whatever reason, Boruc seemed to be a step above his previous performances this season. Even so, our main attacking 3 (Suarez, Sturridge and Coutinho) just didn't seem to be in good form this week. Had they been sharper, we might've overcome the defensive frailty and lack of bite in midfield. When on form they're capable of outscoring anyone. Unfortunately, they failed to show up yesterday, too.

I can't say I agree with everyone's criticism of BR regarding Suarez's positioning at the start of the game. I believe starting Suarez in a free role from the middle of the field is precisely where we will get the most out of him in most matches. The theory is that Sutrridge, Coutinho and Downing should pull the defense enough to open space for Suarez. The problem yesterday was that the high defensive line and pressing compressed the play enough to restrict the service to our front four. Moreover, a very disciplined performance by Southampton's back-four negated the impact of Sturridge in stretching the defense vertically. Sneiderlin and Cork were running everywhere to close down Suarez, and Allen doesn’t allow Gerrard the defensive cover to get forward and become the extra attacker. The result was that we were very restricted in our attacking play in the first half.

My major disappointment with BR is that we didn’t switch to a 4-3-3 to counter this, but I believe the early goals had a major effect on the decision making process for the changes. Had we been level at the half, bringing Lucas and Hendo on for Sturridge and Allen would make more sense. This would allow both Hendo and Gerrard to get forward more, allowing us to retain possession and gain the upper hand. The problem is that in doing so, we would have removed a significant goal-threat. Still trailing at the half meant that we needed to score as much as (or more than) we needed to control the game. Therefore, Lucas for Allen was the only really impactful change made. In short we went for glory, but our forwards misfiring on the day meant that we weren’t able to pull anything back. Once the defense folded up again for Jay Rodriguez’s goal, we were out of the match.

It was a disappointing day, but certainly not a systematic failure. Had at least one of Reina, Carra and Lucas been able to make the start, we might’ve seen a very different result. Mind, I’m not trying to slag off Jones. I though he played fairly well yesterday. He simply doesn’t have the presence of Reina to organize the backline. Unfortunately 2 or 3 steps forward have always been countered by one of “these” performances this season. I think it’s time to let it go and roll on Aston Villa after the Int. Break.

Jones was decent but the free-kick goal of Lambert could've been saved had it been Reina. All the goals we conceded very sloppy.

Skrtel was poor yesterday. I don't know if he's like that or just lacking confidence.

Lastly, I don't know why Allen started yesterday. He is already having shoulder problems and playing him alongside Gerrard in a 2-man midfield is axing your own foot. Better options in Henderson and Lucas were available. If not for Lucas, Henderson should have played. He is a proper box-to-box mid and is definitely way better than Allen defensively, also has an immense work rate.

Reina wouldn't have saved it man. It took a deflection and it was unlucky for Jones. You can't blame him for it.

Also, really sick of the agenda people have with Skrtel. (It's not just here but it's everywhere.)

I don't understand how everyone can blame HIM for the lost. Rodgers is the one to blame if you want point fingers.

Fact is, that was Martin's first game in 2 months. He was never going to be the best player on the pitch. Especially if everybody is around him is struggling around him. Where's the blame for the likes of Gerrard and Johnson etc etc?

Not sure how people are even blaming Martin for their first goal when Johnson gave a Soton attacker a free header in the build up to it. And as you are all aware, I'm pro-Glen. But that apparently goes unnoticed...

Also, Allen is NOT a DM. And he never will be.
His best position is a CM in a 3 man midfield. With a secondary position to be more advanced in the middle of the pitch.

Henderson should be starting over him every day of the week. Especially with Joe's "out for 3 months" LFC.com statement.
