Yeh felt like he was playing a different game at times. But then again Costa doesn't really offer much on the ball, instead he just gives Spain a focal point and a different dimension after all the passing. Doesn't mean it's better than playing a false 9 though.

As I said, he doesn't have anywhere near the technique to play within Del Bosque's system. Not only a provincial Palletta marked him out tonight, he simply could not gain influence on any contingent of the match as I refuse to believe that this being his first match for España has anything to do with it.

I repeat, Costa does not deserve our shirt ahead of Negredo, Llorente and even Alcacer.

Its a mismatch beyond reason.

First time playing in a completely new and unique setup. Will take a few games to settle. Not that it matters. Fabregas will be Spain's centerforward in Brazil.

In a system that requires scrupulous technique to recycle possession even in the final third, Costa does not fit the bill. His technique is severely lacking as his darting runs towards the box were performed as if he did not need to lead the line, along with the obvious fact that he does not have the spatial understanding on the ball and keep to pace with the rapid possession switch.

It stinks of another Raul under Aragones. Villa or Llorente always work up front especially Villa, regardless of his form.

I think it will actually benefit Spain to have someone upfront who is a bit more "chaotic" in his approach. It's becoming too stale, monotonous and predictable when even the CF is a techno midget with 90+ % passing accuracy. Besides Spain don't have too many options. Villa gets outmuscled by any half decent centerback these days. Costa offers physical presence. Negredo works best in a 2 man striker partnership. For Spain, surrounded by bodies all around, he looks lost. Last time he started for Spain against Portugal in the Euros he touched the ball like 5 times. Let's not talk about Torres. That leaves us with Llorente who scores 99.99999 % of his goals with his head which only makes sense with the Navas dimension.

Problem is, Costa has began to be quite predictable. I know he is the type with surging runs through the channels yet his runs from the deep and lack of congruence on the ball in this system is a glaring deficiency. Villa for España never needs to take on defenders as he is consistently outside the box and finds vast open space created by his teammates and himself, to which his shooting his taken into effect. Negredo until last year under Emery has been taught how to lead the line as he thrives upon the space given alone now, although has yet to truly work for España. Llorente's heading is world class yet using him for his head is a dire mistake to which Caparross rued and Bielsa understood. Llorente's year under Bielsa had him take 82% of his goals through his feet (44% left foot & 56% right foot) as even under Del Bosque he has looked good everytime he has played. Problem is his off the ball movement tends to have the play centre around him too much yet on the ball he excels. Problem is that Villa and Llorente are our only two-footed strikers as the others with weaker foots tend to struggle given the angle dimensions and consistent need to find space up front, which is why Raul was a failure within this system.

In all likeness we will continue to see Cesc as False 9 for España.

I maintain my earlier point. Costa will look good vs this Athletic considering every high-work rate direct spearhead CF who tends to go off the ball vs them always looks better than they are. Athletic have struggled vs every CF in this particular mould as Costa has never had a performance such in the likeness of this since...(guess)....Athletic in the Copa Del Rey.
