Wenger said Ox was "available" against Villa so, not sure if that means he'll be on the bench and eased back in with some more U-21 time on Wednesday then to play vs Fulham.

That would be the more prudent approach.

Arsenal will appoint Dutchman Andries Jonker as their new youth academy director, apparently.

I don't know much about his time in Spain and Netherlands but in Germany Jonker is very highly thought.

He's always behind the scenes so one who's not directly involved can't say much about him, however he has a clear philosophy when it comes to youth football: he doesn't care much about results and trophies as much as he does about developing and integrating youngsters in the first team. So I wouldn't expect much improvement in that regard.

I was hoping we get Romeo Jozak from Dinamo Zagreb, the guy has a proven record but Jonker is a great addition aswell.

Our 21s lost 4-2 to Liverpool U21s earlier today.

Team was:

Macey; Jenkinson, Ajayi, Hayden, Yennaris; Frimpong, Zelalem; Chamberlain, Eisfeld, Toral; Afobe

Afobe and Hayden scored our goals. Chamberlain played 60 minutes. Sounds like we got a bit battered, though.

Good minutes for Oxlade, Toral and Zelalem I guess. They all need to find sharpness and fitness back.

I don't remember when was the last time we had a good defender from the youth ranks. Gibbs?

Read that Kristoffer Olsson has been playing in a deeper Arteta-esque role this season to good effect and that his contract is up in June.

Apparently he rejected loan moves to League One as he feels he's ready to break into the first team.

What do you guys think, he seemed decent in the summer friendlies and against WBA for the bit he played. Arteta turns 32 in a couple months and could be around for at least another 2-3 years but it would be great to know his successor is in our ranks for the time being (Olsson is only 17).

I know our midfield is extremely hard to break into but Wenger supposedly likes the Swede.

Technically, he may be ready for first team action, but physically he needs to develop a lot before he's ready for consistent action. A loan would really help him in that regard, so it's a bit worrying to hear that he's turned offers down.

I think it'd be very impatient of him to be expect first team opportunities any time soon. He's still very young and if he stays around and develops he could easily succeed Flamini or Arteta in the squad, so he needs to be patient. If he does leave because he's been promised first team chance else where, it'd be a great shame, but I wouldn't lose much sleep over it since we've so many talented midfield players.

Agree with Jay here. I like Olsson, but there is no room for impatient youth in our team culture. There are positions which will take filling on the roster over the next 3-4 years:

Diaby; Rosicky; Arteta; Sagna

Then there are Flamini; Cazorla; Podolski.

The likes of Crowley, Zelalem, Bellerin, .. will get their turn if they keep their heads down and work their way up. Gnabry and Ox are both young and have had good exposure already. Olsson belongs to the same generation as these and he needs to focus his energies, lest he follows JET/Lansbury/.. (Frimpong)/..

Arsenal U21s playing Chelsea U21s in the cup. Currently in extra time. Afobe just chipped the keeper after being picked out by an excellent Olsson long pass. 1-0 with 10 minutes of extra time to play.

Isaac Hayden signs new contract

Eighteen-year-old defender Isaac Hayden has signed a new contract with Arsenal Football Club.

The under-21s captain made his first-team debut in the Gunners’ Capital One Cup victory over West Bromwich Albion last September and has since provided regular cover for Arsène Wenger’s side, featuring as an unused substitute on five occasions this term.

As under-19s skipper, Hayden has helped the academy side to a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League this season. In 2012/13, he was also a key part of the team to reach the NextGen Series finals weekend in Lake Como, Italy.
Hayden is an England youth international, and has represented his country at under-16, 17, 18 and 19 level.

The Essex-born youngster signed professional terms with Arsenal in 2012, having joined the Club from Southend United in 2008.

Everyone at Arsenal looks forward to Isaac’s continued development and contribution in the coming years.

Apparently he's more comfortable has a defensive midfielder than as a centre back. Either way, some young talent is welcome.

The young kid from Barcelona, Pleguezuelo, is doing well as well, and there's the likes of Tafari Moore, Brendan Ormonde-Ottewill and, of course, Hector Bellerin, so we've finally got some decent defensive talents coming through.

He's made a grand total of 6 appearances for Leicester this season, is 21 and his contract expires at the end of the season. So, probably not.

Besides Gibbs, what decent defensive prospects have we come up with recently? Struggling to think of any.
