Verratti is being evaluated as to his physical condition, since he just came back from an injury, to determine if, and how much he can play.

Otherwise, Ventura is expected to field the same team that beat Spain in the Euros except for Bonaventura for Giaccherini and Romagnoli for Chiellini (suspended)

Expected line up: Buffon; Romagnoli, Bonucci, Barzagli; De Sciglio, Bonaventura, De Rossi, Parolo, Florenzi; Eder, Pelle

Chiellini suspended but De Rossi playing means we will end up with 10 men anyway.

Still think Romagnoli is a bit too green to be starting for the NT

MONTOLIVO?

At least its not in front of the defense, but I would so much rather play Bonaventura or Bernardeschi, even Florenzi on the inside and Candreva or Darmian outside.

Replacing Chiellini is hard but Im fine with Romagnoli.

With Spain past and Verratti more recovered now we can finally see something exciting from Ventura.

Pelle was sent back to his club after refusing to shake Ventura's hand upon being substituted and saying some shit. Gabbiadini is also not in the squad, supposedly the federation is sending him back to Napoli since they got Milik injured and don't wanna risk anything else.

Verratti is getting back in shape so he is starting. Chiellini picked up a calf injury, so Romagnoli starts again. 1 midfield spot is being contested between Bona, Bernardeschi and Florenzi.

Expected lineup:

Immobile - Belotti

De Sciglio - Bonaventura - Verratti - Parolo - Candreva

Romagnoli - Bonucci - Barzagli

Buffon

Something curious I noticed is that the players near each other would all have been couples that played together in clubs except for Verratti of course but he will come home soon enough.

This is because I don't care about having players in NT.
On paper we have the starter Italy CF but he is not Vieri anymore, but Eder ... that NEVER scores.

About the other CF, Pellè , he was evicted by Ventura just because we played against FYROM today.

He'd have never had courage to do it against Spain.

Pelle should not be called up again   in NT, average CF that plays in China now ..  it happens just because Ventura is a reactionary.

Agreed Robes, Pelle sacrificed his national team career when he signed for a Chinese club. Eder actually usually provides something for Italy, unlike with Inter, but I don't care for him much either.

I would really like to see Insigne, he is a wildcard unused and I know he is injured and young but I would like to see Berardi make his debut at some point.

Thank god for Verratti

If Berardi comes back like he was before he got injured then he will 100% be in the next call up. Romagnoli, Donnarumma, Belotti have all made their debuts and Benassi, Sansone, Bernardeschi are in the team. Ventura always uses young people.

Pelle is done, even if he didn't refuse to shake Ventura's hand. Pelle and Eder were only first choice because he wanted to keep the team intact until the Spain game. With this now, Pelle is out. Eder will be done as well anytime.

It still has to be seen as somewhat of an embarrassment though. Gifted Macedonia two goals and just didn't seem like closing out the game after being 1-0 up.

The important thing is the three points, in what is turning out to be a difficult group so far but the play, tactics, selection, you name it, has not been encouraging thus far.

Football-italia wrote:Giampiero Ventura confirms 4-2-4 will be Italy’s “future direction” as he looks to freshen up the Azzurri over the course of his reign.

Speaking to La Stampa on Friday, Ventura hinted Milan’s Manuel Locatelli and Sassuolo’s Lorenzo Pellegrini, plus Claudio Marchisio, would form the core of Italy’s next generation and refused to dismiss Simone Zaza and Mario Balotelli, although Alejandro Gomez was not yet eligible for a call-up.

“What I thought about my first night at Coverciano? That I was faced with challenging and rewarding opportunity, but one that was also difficult because we’re in a difficult, historical moment and we have to rebuild,” the Coach told La Stampa.

“In short, we have to think about making a generational change. It’s fantastic that we still have the old guard, but we can’t think that they’ll go on forever.

“The 2018 World Cup? We’ll try to qualify in a group that isn’t seeded and then have a hugely-important World Cup.

“In the meantime, we’ll try to build something parallel, giving call-ups to those who are 18, 19, 22.

“You can call them internships, but for me they are call-ups. The day when Barzagli tells me ‘don’t call me up anymore’, I must have someone ready.

“Locatelli? He’s 18 years old and expected to become one of the best midfielders around, something that I hope will happen.

“But he can play in the national team right now? What if he messes up in two games, does he risk missing out for the next 10 years?

“Sassuolo’s youngsters? I’ve been to see them: Pellegrini, Mazzitelli, Politano, they made a good impression on me. Can they become internationals? For me yes, but the pitch will do the talking.

“Marchisio? For his characteristics, he’s a player who the national team have missed a lot. He can absolutely play in a 4-2-4.

“The new-look Italy? The internships will set them on that. They’re also to see if many of the lads are ready; then we’ll see which difficulties Germany will pose us.

“The old 3-5-2? Today, the characteristics of eligible players no longer respond to 3-5-2.

“Therefore, in the near future, I’d like to install the 4-2-4 because in Italy there are many wide players and few midfielders, although it’s a compatibility issue, not for their quality. The future direction will be [4-2-4].

“Papu Gomez? There was a banner in Bergamo for Papu, which was extraordinary. But there’s a problem. He’s not yet eligible for a call-up and we’re checking if he will be in the future.

“Zaza and Balotelli? If we’re talking about hopes, I have them too – to win the lottery! Zaza’s in a difficult moment, but if I can, I’ll help him.

“As for Balotelli, he should only be asking questions on why all the questions [directed at him] haven’t been about football.”

Now this is a proper Ventura call up. Cataldi and Politano get their first calls. The categorizing and the players called point to a back 4.

Only 4 CBs and those are on point: Barzagli, Bonucci, Romagnoli and Rugani.

The fullbacks, midfielders and wingers are great as well.

Only the strikers have some boring choices like Eder. Pelle is gone as expected. Zaza gets called to asses his situation.

I imagine something like

Buffon

Darmian/Zappacosta - Barzagli - Bonucci - De Sciglio

Candreva/Bernardeschi - Verratti - Marchisio - Bonaventura/Insigne

Immobile - Belotti

Barzagli dislocated his shoulder vs Chievo and Marchisio has some muscle problems so they pull out. In their place Izzo (Genoa) and Gagliardini (Atalanta) are called up.
