World Cup Flops

Post by RED on Sun Jul 06, 2014 5:19 am

Which players have failed to meet your expectations? Name and shame.

For me:

Eden Hazard- failed to make any impact in any of the matches he's played. Had 2 assists, but I expected a lot more from someone with his ability.

Lukaku- Awful. Eventually replaced by Origi.

Oscar- Been invisible since Brazil's openng match.

The whole belgium team aside from Courtois. That's if you can call it flopping and not showing their potential. Most aren't as good as many perceive them to be.

I dont understand why Eden and Lukaku should be labelled flops tbh, or even Oscar.

None of those guys are elite dominant players that were expected to take over their team ala Zidane and lead them to the final.

that's specially true for Eden. he is still a kid, he didnt play particularly well, but at the age he is, it's normal. Oscar is a bit the same in way, but i disagree with you he has been doing well.

Lukaku? seriously? he is not a top player, that he struggled to perform is normal for a player of his level.

Obviously, i didnt rate those players as high as some so they were not flopping for me, just going through the motions.

Worst of it all, they were playing for teams which severely lacked in cohesion and maturity.

CR was by far the biggest flop.inb4 Portugal suck/he was injured

and Oscar has been doing well for us, he was great vs Colombia. Not to mention he is the player who stole most balls in the WC after Mascherano

Gelnado has to be the greatest flop in this wc . He has been fit as told by his coach and fitness staff . His empathy PR story has to be the greatest troll ever done by a player on his own fans . Lot of his fans cut their hair to look like him after Germany match only to be trolled by the diva by shaving his side hair . CR has won barber award of the tournament. Who want goals . 3 hairstyle >>> 1 goal

hazard .

not buying the backtracking from people who thought he was going to take the world cup by storm just a month ago.

and how is hazard a " kid " ? he's been a pro for 7 years. he's as old as ronaldo was in euro 2008 when the pressure was on him to perform , as old as messi in world cup 2010 when the whole world was looking at him and expecting him to take argnetina to the final , as old as henry was in euro 2000 when everybody was expecting him to lead the best team in the world's attack .

The key to this is YOUR expectations.

Hazard - Not all his fault but lacks aggression and leadership. Dont expect him to be Messi or even Neymar..but as a Belgium fan you have to look at James and think, why not Hazard?

Needs to be moved into the middle for Belgium, too easy to keep him out the game. Skill not in question, mind set is.

Oscar - No creativity. Alot of effort but not enough guile. Should take it personally he doesnt play as a CAM but he doesnt deserve it, his game doesnt even seem suited to it. Those early comparisons to Socrates are just blasphemy.

Fred - He isnt no world beater, I wouldnt even call him a good player. But he is better than this.

Akinfeev - I dont have great expectations for him because I dont know him, but I never imagined he would be this bad. Horrific goalkeeping performances.

Cavani - Could forgive him when Forlan and Suarez were both starting with him and it changed his role, but even without them. Gave very little. Dont understand why he doesnt play like a regular 9, thats what he is.

Higuain - Bit unfair, because I knew he would do nothing if he didnt get space. But 4 straight games of nothing cant be brushed aside. Has the chance to turn it around after a very productive game vs Belgium.

Pogba - Not a flop really, but disappointing and didnt match what I expected from him.

Entire thread to me isnt so much the label "flop". Just players who I felt could do better or were noticeably bad.

No mention of the entire Spanish team? worst performance I have seen in a long time in a WC from a "top" team.

CR - seriously, he needs more mentions. The guy is the biggest flop of the tourney. Isn't he supposed to be the 3rd best player in the world or something? wtf did he do?

Hazard - Laughing
Spain NT - every single one of their players
Brazil attack (bar Neymar)
Modric - awful
Cavani

Iniesta was in no way a flop. Its easy to lump everyone in together, but he did very well in all the games.

Clearly no agenda here Laughing

But I do agree them 3 on part of a much bigger list that's already been said.

Don't want to pick more than one of a team.. consider those their teams biggest flops.

Diego Costa (though to be honest.. Casillas), Hazard, Fred, Messi (obviously not but I'll be damn disappointed if I lose my bet because of him not becoming top scorer. Actual flop is Aguero), Cavani, Ronaldo, Akinfeev (I somehow (FIFA) though he's a decent keeper...  What a Face ), Rooney (actually not - I didn't expect any of them to perform)

I also didnt pick Cristiano nor Aguero because both were playing unfit/injured.

Wasnt the sole reason for their bad play, but enough so they get excluded from this in my opinion.

ronaldo is far from being THE flop of the tournament imo.
couldn't have done anything in that germany game when they played most of the game with 10 players.

made a glorious assist to keep his team in the tournament against the US.

scored a goal and hit the post in the game against ghana.

he underperformed , but he wasn't the flop of the tournament.

You have twisted that to some degree.

Portugal were 2-0 down before the red, nobody, him included did anything.

Did nothing in the US game over than shoot, shoot and shoot some more. Great cross no question.

Missed multiple of chances vs Ghana, scored 1 but it meant nothing the chance to qualify wasnt there.

didn't say he didn't underperform.

but if we're gonna talk about " THE " flop of the tournament, ronaldo doesn't belong in the discussion imo.

Both of them were poor. Sterling had a good match v Italy, thats it.

Sturridge wasted chance after chance. Wasn't good enough for England.

About Hazard, he really needs to find ways to evolve his game. Right now everything he does is predicated on him getting the ball to his feet and going on 1v1 on the edge of the box to either cross or shoot. When he does it and it works as vs Russia, it's brilliant, for the vine.

Other than that, his movements are very very poor. I keep saying that. That's why he cant compare with Neymar to me. Nerman off the ball, moving and finding pockets of space to be dangerous in, is a freak. That's the true talent of Neymar and what allows him to make the difference so much for brazil.

Maybe he has it easy because he played as a forward so much. But that's just what he needs to be doing.
