Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has called for managers to have the breaks in the game that would allow them to makes tactical changes.
Mourinho's revolutionary idea would see a touchline technician being handed the chance to step into a match and alter its direction, which he argues Louis van Gaal did successfully during a water break that he used to change his tactics for his Netherlands side in their match against Mexico at this summer's World Cup finals in Brazil.
"Football is very slow to change the rules. How many years have we had to wait for goal line technology, for the third substitution," asked Mourinho, in comments appearing in the Daily Mirror.
"I hope I am still in football when they give the coach the chance to stop the game during the first half once and during the second half because you can make the game much better.
"Louis van Gaal in the World Cup, the ref stopped the game for the water break, and he changed the system of his team and managed to win the game. So maybe I will one day have the chance to stop the game in the first half and once in the second half."

It's more than likely because of the game against Leicester, we played poorly in the first half, he had to wait till half time to change it.

Nah, breaks would make the match boring for viewers imo.

Re: Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
yeah lets hope not...
you typically get a good two hours before the match begins to know the starting 11 of your opponent, you get the opportunity to have a 15 minute half time
that's more then enough.

Re: Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
the only problem with these, is the game being stopped when one team has the momentum, and one coach taking advantage of his time out to ruin it. It's the way it happens in NBA for example, but like mou said, footy is a slow game and it's hard to build momentum in the first place.
The solution for that would be an additional break in the middle of a half or so. SPonsors would love that.
it's not a terrible idea, if it helps manager being more proactive and brings more spectacle at the end.

Re: Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
But he didn't have to wait, he chose to. We've seen on plenty of occasions that managers can and do make changes to formations/tactics during a match... either through substitutions or through simply shouting orders from the sidelines that are then relayed to the players. Being able to make such decisions and apply them in-match are all part and parcel of being a top manager at a top club.Kick wrote:It's more than likely because of the game against Leicester, we played poorly in the first half, he had to wait till half time to change it.

Re: Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
That's hardly the only problem, to be honest. And again, managers can be proactive as the game is now. It's entirely possible to alter formations or tactics while the game is being played... no need to add in breaks for something that can already be done.Mr Nick09 wrote:the only problem with these, is the game being stopped when one team has the momentum, and one coach taking advantage of his time out to ruin it. The problems were not something that could be fixed simply by giving orders on the touchlines.
I think Jose actually wants to be able to give team talks during the match.
Our performance from first half to second was a lot different, but not tactically, we were just more motivated.

That's again part and parcel of the game. If you can't get the players up for the match from the start it's your/your players' own fault... not something that should cause a change throughout the entire sport.

I'm just going to point out that I am not for this idea.
I am just giving my reasoning behind why Jose wants it.

Re: Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
i didnt say it was a need, only that it wasnt such a bad proposal. Managers can get active on the sideline and influence games, but surely getting your group together and passing a message through can be of even greater influence.

Re: Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
Jose wants it because it would be the single greatest asset to a manager who favours cagey, defensive football ever to be introduced to the sport.Kick wrote:I'm just going to point out that I am not for this idea.

Sure, but it's both unnecessary and hugely disruptive to both individual matches and the overall spirit of the sport. You can also do a lot more to motivate and tactically change a side by allowing a 2 minute meeting each time possession changes, but that's not something you'd consider a worthwhile suggestion, is it?Mr Nick09 wrote:i didnt say it was a need, only that it wasnt such a bad proposal. Re: Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
Water breaks were a necessary evil.
Give me 45 minutes non stop followed by a halftime and then another 45 minutes please. I don't want to go into extremes and say this makes football the NFL, but let's be honest, the non stop football with just one 15 minute break is one of the reasons I love it.

Re: Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
Managers have been coming up with tactics as the game rolls, depending on what the situation calls for, for years. Thats why they prepare and analyze matches well before game day.
If he can't handle the speed of the game then he should gtfo. The nerve of this guy to ask for something like this jus so he can have more time to think

Re: Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
Good chance to take a leak. Other than that - pitiful idea. There's absolutely no need.. tactics should be flexible enough to make changes in game, give a yell to your captain.
Why introduce something that would disrupt the flow of a game. Which is already disrupted enough by time wasting tactics.
Agree with RedO, this would only suit those managers who prefer disciplined, cagey tactics. Like Mou.

"Revolutionary idea"? We already saw this at the WC with the cooling breaks.

No, we haven't.
Water breaks were 3 minute breaks called at the discretion of the referee for the sake of player health, not manager controlled "time outs" that can be called whenever in each half to the benefit of each manager. Significant difference.

Re: Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
Not in favor, just because this would guarantee commercial breaks and end up adding a ton of time on the games.
Put a rule in for one time out, networks will push for 5 because of the ridiculous amount of revenue they would stand to gain from it. lt's a slope you don't want to venture down.

Re: Jose Mourinho calls for tactical breaks
A bad idea. The half-time is enough for a tactical break and being tactically ready for a match means that you've done your preparation properly. Furthermore, a manager should have "hot keys" for changing tactics quickly during a game, like shouting "tactic one / two / three" and the players would know without additional instructions what to do.
Plus nobody wants to see damn needless breaks during the game.
