Do we play better without Jack?

Post by Raptorgunner on Mon Oct 20, 2014 4:31 pm

Jack has been improving but his style is too dangerous for us to imo. Jack has the talent but needs to release the ball more quicker, and stop giving it away in midfield.

I am not bashing jack at all but what you guys think?

Make it poll.

We play shit anyway. Jack or not, doesn't matter. (Also, make that an option.)

i agree, we do keep the ball better without jack, jack has poor positional movement when under pressure, he doesnt know how to shake off his markers and when he does, he's in a poor position to receive the ball. when people criticize him for lacking game intelligence, they are not trolling, he really does lack the movement/positional intelligence that top top midfielders have. you wont notice this until you watch him live in  stadium where you can see his off the ball movements.

He could improve this but, this is something you have to be taught at an early age. He is English and most English midfielders have this problem, thats why england always struggle at international level to keep the ball well, they dont know when and how to move around to pitch to find space and make themselves available. Has nothing to do with their technique.

I would agree with REWB.
Adding to it that players seem to be better in defense or in attack. Not both at once. What seems to make the difference between them is having a natural instinct. I am just not sure that Jack has a natural instinct to attack. Does he look great for a couple of minutes a game sure. It is just the rest of the time his game seems to be forced and uncomfortable. When he goes forward a lot of the time he seems to have tunnel vision seeing a small portion of the pitch. Not seeing and timing passes and movement. Frequently getting into tight situations that end in bad passes or getting kicked. I have always thought that Jack's natural tendencies were more of a Defensive box to box, not an AM or CM that is wired for a possession oriented game.
Like others have said though, We look so poor now that Wenger's new everyone on the pitch except the keeper and CBs are really AMs is working for anyone individually or the club.
I just wonder at what time, or if a football player with the wages they get actually sit back and evaluate the Club, Manager and formation. Then decide if they would be better off somewhere else. With many of our players they can not leave and expect the same wages so it would be hard.

Our best performance of the season so far was against City and Jack played well that day and scored a good goal. The name of the thread should be " do we play better without Flamini"

And the answer is no.

I condemn the fact that the most popular answer is not in the poll options.

Podolski comes on for Jack and Arsenal win out of nowhere.

The balance of our team and wilsheres role in it is a serious debate. Comments like this is why it usually gets silly, in what way did we get better after he went off? what did either goal have to do with midfield? please

Re: Do we play better without Jack?

To give a serious response...

It's not what Wilshere does as an individual that's the issue, but more that in an attempt to find a role that suits him best, we unbalance the side slightly. Wilshere has his faults as a player but so do Ramsey and Ozil; we don't not win games because Wilshere has a habit of running into dead ins or that his shooting isn't particularly good.

I don't think, though, that Wilshere and Ramsey can play together in central midfield. We know Wilshere and Ozil can play together, and that Ramsey and Ozil can play together, because generally one plays in front of the other. But when Wilshere and Ramsey are together, the midfield becomes too flat because they both want to do the same thing; they both want to start attacks from deep, they both want to control games from the middle, and they both want to make runs forward to create a chance or score a goal.

It's an issue that's further complicated by the fact that they can't play anywhere else. They aren't as effective as 10s, and they aren't DMs either so it's not like you just play one in front of the other. Doing that just means one will not perform as well as he can do.

So for this to work, they need to learn to alternate. They need to have an understanding as to who stays back to help the DM and who goes forward to help the attack, and when they should switch duties. If both go forward it leaves too open in the middle of the pitch, and if both stay back it isolates our forward line and makes it harder to pass through the midfield.

Re: Do we play better without Jack?

Basically that.

Wilshere and Ramsey would only work when we have two wide forwards who are both a goal threat and when there is a DM who can cover ground quite fast.

The best performance by both of them at the same time was against United in 2011 when we had the front 3 of Nasri/Arshavin-RVP-Walcott.

If we can have

-----------DM-----------
----Wilshere----Ramsey--
Walcott-----Welbeck----Sanchez

that can work.

But we are not dropping our best midfielder just to accommodate those two. One of them needs to be dropped and it's becoming more likely that it's Wilshere. I love him, but I rather go back to our last season's system than suffer in this current one.

@RG: I was contemplating just last evening that we could go back to a traditional 4-3-3 and do somewhat better, even if it is Flamini/Arteta anchoring - neither of them is worse in defensive discipline than Song was! Throw in a good DM and it completes the set. But it will only work till Özil comes back, after which we will see him play on the LW again.

Is it jack or Wenger is a genius and we dont know it? hmm   Very Happy

I have a feeling if we went back to a 4-2-3-1 where Wilshere play CAM we would win games.

Arsenal v crystal palace ht 1:1
wilshere sub off 69" >> 2:1 90" ramsey

Arsenal v everton ht 0:2
wilshere sub off 74" >> 1:2 83" ramsey 2:2 90" giroud

Arsenalv dortmund ht 0:1
wilshere play 90 minutes >> 0:2 ft

Arsenal v aston villa ht 3:0
wilshere is on the BENCH!!!!

Arsenal v tottenham hotspur 56" 0:1
wilshere sub off 62" >> 1:1 74" ox

Arsenal v galatasary ht 3:0
wilshere is on the BENCH!!!!

Arsenal v chelsea ht 0:1
78" 0:2 >>> wilshere still on the pitch

Arsenal v hull 46" 1:2
wilshere sub off 68" >>> 2:2 90" welbeck

Arsenal v anderlecht 71" 0:1
wilshere sub off 82" >>> 1:1 89" gibbs 2:1 91" podolski

You know what else is common? You were watching all those games! Maybe that is the cause-effect relationship and we'll start performing awesomely if you don't watch!

That logic even supersedes the best Daily Mail anti-Arsenal articles.

I am beginning to feel sorry for Jack now. The amount of stick that guy gets is hilarious now.

Oh Özil is injured. We can't pick on him. Ok, let's blame Wilshere instead!

A lot of it is this stupid formation that Wenger wants to use know, but I have note been impressed with Jack's play this year at all, and I believe that he isn't good enough for Arsenal right know.

Its a pleasure watching ALexis, he brought his winning mentality with him while the rest of Arsenal players just like Wenger are lost.
