Loaning out both Joel and Podolski?

IF everyone stays fit, which is a BIG IF

Walcott, Ozil, Cazorla, Welbeck, Giroud, Oxlade, Sanchez and Rosicky are good enough in numbers for forward positions.

Then you have Sanogo, Akpom, Gnabry and Niles etc.

Finding a good defender will be the biggest challenge of Winter.

Top clubs won't sell. Bottom clubs is a gamble to buy from. Might get lucky like we did with Koscielny or we might have Squillaci on our hands.

Won't mind going for Laporte tbh.

Matt Law is pretty bad, from experience. He's come out with some wild stories, including that one about us wanting to buy Milner and play him at right back.

John Cross from the Mirror is covering Podolski to Inter, too, though.

The fact that Podolski played no part in a match vs West Ham who he usually smashes is the biggest clue that he's probably leaving.

Re: Winston Reid or players of comparable level, and whether they're good enough ... I think there are two different questions to consider.

Barring really terrific run of form, a guy like Reid isn't going to come in and bench one of Mertescielny. So on one level it is true, this isn't the caliber of player who can propel us onto the highest level.

But the other issue is that, given squad thinness, basically ANY decent PL center back would strengthen the squad from where it is NOW.

In terms of pragmatic, feasible options then, I would be happy if we got, say, Reid (or equivalent) plus a defensive mid. And then reassessed in the summer after moving on whoever needs to go and be replaced/upgraded.

Reid is really not a bad defender. He could even be a Gary Cahill from Bolton type transfer. In the right system he can look very decent.

Podolski to Inter loan all but done, Italian press reporting. Wenger has given his permission.

If Podolski and Sanogo both go, do you think Wenger is keeping an eye out for one new attacker? Or will Akpom, Maitland-Niles, etc. get their chance?

Apparently with Warnock gone Palace may not be as keen on Sanogo as they were before.

Even if he does go on loan, I think Wenger will see Giroud, Welbeck, Alexis and Walcott as adequate enough options up front.

Let's not fool ourselves, we could still do with a world class striker.

Not in January though, that can wait for Summer. Replacement for Podolski and Sanogo? Joel Campbell who will get more playing time and Chuba Akpom will hopefully get whatever play time Sanogo was supposed to get.

All we need in January is a 3rd choice CB, Bielik and another defensive CM/box-to-box like Khedia/Song but I doubt the latter will happen.

@urbi - I thought Chum meant we need one now, or we're should be trying to get one now. I agree with you that it isn't a priority.

We all know secretly that we will end up signing an attacking midfielder, a 16 y.o. GK and a 36 y.o. LB on loan from the Chinese Super League on deadline day.

My initial question, before all the joking around started, was half-serious. More speculative than anything. Not because I really expect Arsenal will get an attacker, let alone someone like Cavani, or because there are a ton of good options this January, but simply because Wenger is prone to unpredictable or counter-intuitive moves. Especially in January. Remember when we got Nacho Monreal and moved on Andre Santos? Källström? Things that you don't think we need. And then leaving one or more seemingly "necessary" acquisitions unaddressed.

We all agree we need that CB, and a DM would be really, really, really useful.

Which is why a LW signing instead would not completely shock me. Watch this space for Konoplyanka, Arsenal's new #30.

I think I just suffered a "William Carvalho"...

This guy looks like a *bleep* great player. Polish DM's

Because he plays in La Liga and a strong team in Sevilla, I imagine he's legit. I hope he is.

I thought of the same two signings, tbh. However, Monreal has done a job since, so I didn't want mirth at his expense. I admit the '36 y.o. loan' was based on Källström though Laughing

Krychowiak's had an excellent first few months with Sevilla. Technically he's nothing special but he's got everything you'd ever want or need in a midfield destroyer: strong in the air, strong in the tackle, very good at reading and reacting to danger and a great engine. He's the exact type of player we don't have.

One thing to bare in mind is that Arsenal and Sevilla play very different styles of football. Sevilla are predominantly a defensive/counter attacking team who always plays two holding players - usually Krychowiak and Mbia - and when they get a lead they'll prioritize protecting that lead ahead of scoring more. What he, or any holding player for that matter, would be like in the more spacious Arsenal midfield is anybody's guess.
