Can Varane grabs Carvalho's starting spot ? Empty Can Varane grabs Carvalho's starting spot ?

Post by Pedram on Fri Jul 15, 2011 5:31 pm

I know he's young and inexperienced but on other side we have Carvalho who is starting to decline. if Varane manages to outshine Carvalho there will be some possibilities for us:

1. This is our usual defense line which Varane will be Carvalho's replacement and play alongside Pepe.

Ramos - Pepe - Varane - Marcelo/Conterao

Strength: brings a dynamic defense line with the mixture of Speed, Energy and Aerial ability.
Weakness: lack of experience and calmness, fullbacks will be limited going forward due to less defensive awareness.

2. Ramos play alongside Varane and will be utilized as a CB. Arbeloa/Marcelo are the available covers for the RB position. Pepe will be moved to midfield if needed.

Arbeloa/Marcelo - Ramos - Varane - Conterao

Strength: Can make a great defensive wall with Pepe supporting the defenders as a DM, therefore it's the best option against big teams.
Weakness: There is no major defensive issues with this line up but may effect build up play since a defender is utilized as a DM.

3. Varane is known to have the ability to play as a DM but still he is unproven. he is tall and fast so he can cover a lot of ground, he's also mentally strong and always go for the 50/50 situations, however his sense of leading is unknown at the time. in this formation the defense line will not be changed but Varane will be moved to DM to support the defenders.

Arbeloa/Marcelo - Ramos - Pepe - Conterao

Strength: The defense line will be so fast and dynamic and will allow them to cope with fast forwards easily, also both CB's have great stamina and will not be physically exhausted during the game.
Weakness: Lack of discipline will be the main problem as both CB's are so aggressive.

Can Varane grabs Carvalho's starting spot ? Empty Re: Can Varane grabs Carvalho's starting spot ?

Post by Guest on Fri Jul 15, 2011 5:34 pm

i doubt it unless he just blows everyone out in the preseason. Even then, i have my doubts that Mou will start a 18-year old at CB in his "make or break" season.

What will be interesting is if someone gets injured, suspended, etc. Will Mou go to Albiol? If Ramos remains at RB, will he be moved to CB? Or will Varane be asked to come in an play?

That's the more interesting questions to me.

Yes I think sportsczy brings up some excellent questions. And a lot of it is going to be based on how he performs during this preseason

this is canales all over again, let's all remember he is 18, competition and pressure in Madrid is a whole other story. The hype, the criticism from the press, the exceptations, there are too many factors... maybe it's better we dont expect the world from him just now.

the only chance of him playing CB as a starter this year is if we convert pepe to a DM..

this is very unlikely.

ramos and pepe will be CBs varane and carvalho will be back up CBs. i still hope the kid gets loaned.

I just hope Varane plays... he's certainly not going to improve by watching from the bench.

Loan him to a mid table side in La Liga, see how he does with a full season in Spain.

I actually League 1 is much tougher than La Liga if you take out Barca and Madrid... much. Nobody is going to give an inch. La Liga is a bit soft to me.

Defensively speaking Ligue 1 is the best in Europe.

I still stick to my original comments in that Varane can make an immediate impact. He has already received high praise in training for shutting out Ronaldo/Benzema and Callejon in a few run troughs. He reminds me of a young Pepe with a cooler head and better athleticism.

I see him getting plenty of play time either in defence or as a DM.

Varane can play a nice pass forward, that kind of stuff never lies.

I gave you kudos regarding Varane in its own thread below. You called it... i doubted to be honest and he may still struggle, despite having watch him with Lens a handful of times. But to come in and immediately get everyone's attention as one of the best is darn impressive with a club like Madrid.

Worse thing that could happen to the kid is to spend most of the season on the bench though.... and i really don't see Mou risking playing a 18 year old kid in central defense when it counts.

Ramos will hopefully move to CB which means Albiol and Carvalho will be backups.

We could always sell Albiol and Carvalho will probably leave in a season or two which means Varane will be number 1 CB backup.

I would like to see how he does against Barca though while playing for Getafe or something... well of course Getafe would still lose but I want to see if his performance at least is encourage-able. Ok sure, maybe the French league would be a better test, but if he is to play in La Liga and become successful for us, then he needs to adapt to La Liga styled football.

He is athletic and smart, that's all he needs to be honest.

and his intelligence was talked up more than his athleticism, so he isnt a pshysique first defender, he will be ok.

He's too good for a "mid table" side.
I say we should keep him and see how it goes. he can cope with pressure.

Well the way I see it (I will probably receive some hate for this) is that if Albiol can start for us against Barcelona then Varane can't possibly do any worse really.

Albiol got 2200minutes of play last season and I feel Varane can take those minutes providing he proves himself early on in the season when required. Also Lass gathered about 2400minutes in total and on 13 different occasions came on as a destroyer to see out a game. If Varane can grab a few of those as well then he should get sufficient play time in order to develop. I guess it will come down to how he performs early on. If he transitions his form in training to the play field I feel he will do nicely in terms of play time.

im worried about varane getting playing time.

yes albiol got a lot of minutes last season but this was before we bought coentrao.

the ranking of CBs will go:

1.pepe
2.ramos
3.carvalho
4.albiol
5.varane

that means a lot of players need to get injured or carded for him to even be mentioned. he needs playing time, and he wont find much of it at madrid this year.

Thats why he should get loaned Razz.
Or play him against weaker teams, if we have the control over the game. Kid is immence and talented and honestly i rank him higher than albilol.

i rank him higher than albiol as well,

i also rank ramos higher than pepe as CB. but this list is representative of who mou will put in first. varane is talented yes but very young. mou will put in albiol any day over varane unfortunately..

wait so is coentrao gonna play as rb or what?

i think its impossible for ramos not to move to cb, but its also looking weird for coentrao now to play in rb for some reason.

i hope varane gets playing time, im sure zidane and mourinhi knew everything before and when buying him.

id say get rid of albilol or put him in 5th place. either varane gets playing time and develops into a varanebauer or i kill someone

anyways im sure varane will get playing time. the most dangerous player to us when playing against barcelona was albiol guys, i say varane cant do worst.

if mou needs experience during a match where he needs an extra cb, bring in varane, or that may not be needed since carvalho will get benched by ramos, but id say bring varane when you want to rest someone. you want to MAKE him EXPERIENCED, MAKE him RELIABLE.

this is a mou signing, he wont bench like canales.
