The Conte Era - Chelsea 17/18 Empty The Conte Era - Chelsea 17/18

Post by Kick Sun Mar 13, 2016 9:12 am

The Season is over, Congratulations guys, we suck.

But, we're getting a shiny new manager in Conte, and I am sure he will lure some new faces to the Bridge as well as showing some old faces the door. Without European action, we should but able to focus entirely on the EPL next season, and that will certainly help Conte's cause, however, it could also be a potential draw back for incoming players. So with this in mind, I'd love to hear what everyone thinks will happen over the summer, what formations we will utilise, What our goals should be and who the leadership group should consist of?

Basically, let's use this thread to look to the good days ahead.

Here is what I think in terms of transfers:

Out:
Terry, Sadly, I see Terry leaving, Mostly because Conte will want to bring in a new CB and JT is the one who limits us the most. I also feel like it is a decision which has already been made.

Falcao, do I need to explain? He is rubbish, send him back to Monaco!

Remy, I've always been a fan of Remy, but I don't see him forcing his way back past Traore and therefore it's between him or Pato, and I chose Pato to stay, so Remy has to go.

Amelia, He was never going to play for us, and I imagine he'll just retire again.

Oscar, Perhaps the biggest call here, but with a change of style and the likely arrival of Pjanic, I don't see how Oscar will fit, and it's about time he left, perhaps Juve still want him?

Miazga (loan), Is he even good enough for us? Join the loan army, mate.

+/- Mikel, I am not sure if Mikel will leave or not, his agent has suggested he has offers on the table, so perhaps he finally will?

+/- Baba (loan), If Conte doesn't believe in Baba like Jose and Guus haven't, then I see him joining the loan army, if not, he will stay.

+/- Pedro, If Conte wants to keep Cuadrado, someone will have to go, and I see Pedro being that potential player, if not, we'll see Cuadrado and keep Pedro.

In:
Pato, What is the most Emanelo thing we can do all summer? Buy Pato of course! It'll happen, he'll barely feature, lose any form he had and be sold off in 2017 (:

Pjanic, We've been heavily linked to him and it seems Conte wants him, plus he has an attainable buyout clause and wages, so I don't see why this won't happen. Will be interesting to see how we use him, as he is so similar to Fabregas.

Italian CB*, Conte is the current Italian national team manager, so naturally, we've been linked to Italian CB's to replace Terry, I think we'll probably get one of them, unless of course, we buy Stones Laughing

+/- Nainggolan or Bonaventura, Two more players we've been linked to recently, I can see one or the other joining, depending on Mikel, however, both would be decent pick ups and add something different to our midfield. Bonaventura might be more likely if we buy Pjanic as Roma will not want to lose both Pjanic and Nainggolan.

+/- LB**, This will only happen if we loan out Baba, in which case, I don't know who we will sign, I just threw some names around.

*Bonucci, Romangoli, Rugani OR Stones

**R.Rodriguez, Wendell, Willems

I personally see a switch to the 4-3-3 against big teams or 4-4-2 against small teams.

Courtois
Azpilicueta Zouma CB Baba/LB**
Matic
Fabregas Pjanic/Nain/Bona
Willian Costa Hazard

Or

Courtois
Azpilicueta Zouma CB Baba/LB**
Fabregas Matic
Willian ----------- Hazard
Traore Costa

Full squad:
GKs: Courtois, Begovic, Blackman,
FBs: Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Baba/LB**, Ake, Aina,
CBs: Zouma, CB*, Cahill, Ivanovic, Ake,
CMs: Matic, Fabregas, Pjanic, Loftus-Cheek, Mikel/Nainggolan/Bonaventura, Ake,
LW/RW: Willian, Hazard, Pedro/Cuadrado, Kenedy, Traore, Pato, Bonaventura (if we buy him)
CFs: Costa, Traore, Pato

With that kind of squad, some decent form and a lack of European games, we should aim for top 3 and a domestic trophy.

And I'm not sure how people will feel about this, but I'd give our vice captains spot to Fabregas with Ivanovic taking captaincy. I'm not sure if either Gaz or Bran will be starters so I don't see the point in making Cahill our vice, and Fabregas at least has some experience at it, and does seem to be more of a leader than most of our players.

So let's hear everyone else's opinions now.

I belive you'll sign at least 1 dynamic midfielder.. for Conte they are vital and Chelsea hasn't this sort of player . Ramires was this but he went in China.

It could be argued that both Matic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek (particularly RLC) are dynamic midfielders.

The question is, whether Conte intends to use either of them in that role, I do not know the answer to that as I don't think it has been answered yet.

But, if Conte doesn't want to use either in that role, then Nainggolan or Vidal would be the ideal solution.

Why Costa?

Unless we spend bucket loads on Cavani or Higiuan, we're not going to improve on Costa.

Nice analysis Kick but the Pato bit nearly made me cry.

I also think that the biggest change would come to the midfield. There's such a lack of balance currently and major calls will need to be made.

Do you guys feel that we need to move past the 4-2-3-1?

With Fabregas and Matic as the holding midfielders, we severely lack speed and even if one of them is off their game, we look incredibly shaky.

I know, even if we have a great summer, we'll make one obviously poor transfer, and Pato will be it.

I too think the biggest change will be in midfield, with Pjanic and someone like Nainggolan likely joining (ignore the Vidal talk, no way is he joining us.)

As for the 4-2-3-1, I think it only really benefits Oscar, and Conte doesn't often deploy it, so I think we'll move away from it, particularly if Oscar leaves. I am all for that, too. I personally think the 4-3-3 is superior.

Having thought about the CF spot some more, anyone else think the third spot, behind Costa and Traore, could be filled by some Italian veteran, like Quagliarella or Pellè?

WAGNH just wrote an article suggesting we should recall and use Ake, Christensen and Cuadrado.

http://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2016/3/28/11316568/three-chelsea-loan-stars-who-are-ready-to-make-an-impact-at-first

It's an interesting piece, one that got me thinking about going for a minimalist approach to the summer.

Obviously, a dynamic, energetic midfielder is still required, and perhaps a CF as I mentioned in the post above.

In:
Nainggolan
Quagliarella or Pellè
Cuadrado, Christensen and Ake (loan return)

Out:
Mikel
Remy
Pato
Falcao
Terry
Amelia
Pedro
Miazga (loan)
Baba (loan)

GKs: Courtois, Begovic, Blackman
FBs: Ivanovic, Azpilicueta, Ake, Aina
CBs: Cahill, Zouma, Christensen, Ivanovic, Ake
DMs: Matic, Loftus-Cheek, Ake, Christensen, Zouma
CMs: Fabregas, Nainggolan, Oscar, Loftus-Cheek
Wings: Willian, Hazard, Cuadrado, Kenedy, Traore
CFs: Costa, Traore, Quagliarella/Pellè

Courtois
Azpilicueta Christensen Zouma Ake
Matic
Fabregas Nainggolan
Willian Costa Hazard

thats only 22 first team players, including Aina, so not an overly large squad for just the premier league. Players like Kasey Palmer, Tammy Abraham, Jake Clarke-Salter and Jay Dasilva can be included to make up the numbers in case of emergency.

So the Mirror are suggesting that Conte wants to implement his 4-2-4 formation with us next season. After seeing how well the 4-4-2 has worked for Leicester.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/revealed-chelseas-summer-transfer-targets-7795975

They are suggesting that we will want Griezmann, and Nainggolan to make it happen.

Courtois
Azpilicueta Ivanovic Zouma LB
Fabregas Nainggolan
Willian Griezmann Costa Hazard

Kenedy Traore Pato Pedro
Loftus-Cheek Matic
Ake Cahill Clarke-Salter Aina
Begovic

I'd like to see him get a forward. I love costa, but we should agree that he is not reliable- he did pick up some form over the past few months. Not sure what he would do with Taoure, but def no more loic remy (loved him but gotta go). Not sure what the whole deal with pato was, love the player, but I don't think we should keep him beyond this season.
Also, matic, fabregas, and ivanovic worry me. I am sure, we will be looking at a very different chelsea in August.

You mean losing them because we've had a bad season and will miss out on CL? Or irrelevantly to that?

I think if someone like PSG and Real are really interested and put a good offer for Hazard for both parties he'll most likely accept it, but that would have been the case even if we had a solid season. It just seems bound to happen. And for good offer I mean something like 100M which is realistic considering that De Bruyne, Martial came for 80M.

Whereas for Courtois I'm inclined to say he's going to stay with us.

I don't think we will lose them, only if we want to get rid which I can't see happening.

We'll be similar to Man Utd when they had some crap seasons, most of their best players stayed and I expect the same here.

I can't see them leaving, tbh.

It's all paper talk, I think they'll both wait to see what Conte is like and will more than likely stay.

Biggest player to leave will be Oscar, imo.

Yeah Oscar looks most likely to leave. I thought it would have been Fabregas but he's been sensational after Mou left.

I'm still curious to see if there's gonna be a change in formation. If it stays the same, it's hard to guess who'll get replaced. IMO the forward line won't be too much different

The Conte Era - Chelsea 17/18 Empty Re: The Conte Era - Chelsea 17/18

Post by Kick Tue May 03, 2016 4:02 am

I thought I'd write down some key questions Conte will have to answer over the coming weeks.

Q. Azpilicueta, Leftback or Rightback?
This is one question which no one seems to talk about, but everyone has an opinion on. Do we play Dave at Left back, behind Hazard, or do we move him back to Right back, behind Willian? There are convincing arguments both ways, but my personal preference is to keep him on the left. He has established himself there and works well with Hazard, when they are both on form. Plus, Baba has been horrible all season (I will get to him later). I would also like to see us sign a RB, to play on the other side to Dave. Here is an interesting article from WAGNH arguing for Azpilicueta to remain a leftback:
http://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2016/3/28/11317700/cesar-azpilicueta-top-class-left-back-average-right-back

Q. Keep John Terry, Buy a new CB or promote youth?
This is one question the media have constantly been dicussing, and depending on who you read, a whole number of outcomes have already been decided, or will be decided soon. Terry only has a few months left on his contract, and in January, was told that it wouldn't be renewed. We are yet to hear otherwise, although, some media outlets have suggested Conte wants to keep Terry on. They then proceed to post articles naming Manolas, Abdennour, Rudiger, Stones, or Benatia as his successor. Some have even taken the words from JT himself and said that Jake Clarke-Salter or Andreas Christensen will be his direct replacement next season.

So which is it? I have no idea. Maybe it won't be anyone, maybe we'll keep Ivanovic, Cahill and Zouma as our CB options. Depth isn't so much of an issue as we won't have European football next season. I think this is one of the bigger issues, as Zouma is injured long term, and Cahill and Ivanovic are both over 30 and haven't been great. Keeping Terry would be great, but he restricts the style of football we can play, due to his lack of pace.

I'd personally like to see us move for Benatia, if Hummels goes to Bayern. With Terry, sadly, departing.

Q. Should Terry leave, Ivanovic or Fabregas for Captain?
This is an interesting one. Ivanovic is the vice captain, and has lead us out a fair bit recently, but Fabregas has proven to be a real leader for us, and is more likely to start next season, with some even suggesting Cesc should play as a Regista. This is something which should be settled sooner rather than later. I'd personally like to see it go to Fabregas, simply because he has the potential to hang around for longer, is the better player, and is a more likely starter. Sorry Bran.

Q. 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1?
The question of the formation has come up numerous times, and many are also suggesting a 3 man back-line formation. I think we should focus on a 4 man back-line, as most of the players are already around for it. Beyond that, the formation should be decided later into Conte's tenure. We should find what works best and stick with it. Build a core of players who can player in multiple formations and go from there.

My personal preference is 4-3-3, but we should use what ever works best.

Q. How do we fix the midfield?
Conte will want a dynamic, enforcer type midfielder, and it looks like we're chasing Nainggolan for that role. However, issues still remain as Matic and Oscar have been poor, Mikel wants more playing time, and RLC and Kasey Palmer are knocking on the first team door. Changes will have to be made, at the very least, to accommodate Nainggolan but the way I see it, this will hopefully be sorted out with the formation, and player changes.

Q. What do we do with Courtois, Matic, Baba, and Oscar?
Recent reports suggest Courtois will be sold if he wants to leave and we can get more than 50m for him. While the rest have had terrible seasons. So, do we sell them, or keep them?
Courtois:
Selling Courtois would be a massive shame, especially considering Cech is still top class. I am not sure who I would want as a replacement, but I'd rather not think about losing the big Belgian. Surely we have to keep him at all costs?

Matic:
Matic 2014 was the best DM in the world, Matic 2016 is pretty average, what happened? Can he return to 2014 levels? I certainly hope so, and if Conte can get Matic back to his best, there is no need to sell him. I think Conte should definitely assess Matic before he decides on what to do with him. We will need a replacement if he does leave, and Kante has been often named as a potential successor. Another interesting name thrown in recently is Idrissa Gana Gauye. He's been the standout player for Villa this season and is very comparable to Kante, perhaps he is worth a try?

Baba:
He was brought in at the start of this season after impressing in Germany, and PSG game aside, he has barely impressed with us. I'd personally loan him out and bring in Ake as his replacement, but I imagine Conte will assess him before making any changes. I get the feeling, unless he settles really quick, he'll join the loan army soon.

Oscar:
Oh Oscar, how good you could have been. I think, unless Conte has a plan for Oscar, we should sell. Juve are very interested.

Q. What do we do with Amelia and Pato?
Two of the lower profile players in the team, but two whose future hangs in the balance.

Amelia:
An experienced third choice GK, he hasn't played all season and isn't likely to play next. Ideally, he'd be released and Mitch Beeney, Brad Collins or Jamal Blackman will be given the third choice spot. However, he is Italian and may help Conte settle. It could go either way, and is rather insignificant, so let Conte decide.

Pato:
He's done Ok, and Corinthians expect him to stay, but I am not sure, I think it will depend on how Conte views Bertrand Traore (assuming both Falcao and Remy leave). Should he not rate Traore highly, Pato may leave and a new CF will be brought in, however, if he think Traore deserves a shot, I'd be ok with Pato hanging around.

Q. Pedro or Cuadrado?
Some reports suggest Cuadrado will sign for Juve, some say he'll return to Chelsea. If he does return, we'll have to make room for him, and the obvious departure is Pedro. So who will or should Conte choose between the two? I'd personally stick with Pedro, he is finally finding some form and is adapting to the English game, while Cuadrado is happy in Turin. There is no point in upsetting that balance.

Q. What do we do with the kids? (Namely RLC, Traore and Kenedy.)
The age old question, how do we integrate the youth? I hope to see them treated like normal first team players, as they all have at least one season of first team action behind them now. Hopefully RLC, Traore and Kenedy all stay and get some meaningful minutes next season. I also would like to see us recall Ake and use him as a back up DM and LB. He deserves the spot over Baba. Another loanee we could recall is Van Ginkel, who I see as very much a Conte type player. He is a great box-to-box player who is finally finding form again at PSV, might be worth bringing him back, especially if Oscar leaves. Beyond that, I think we'll see continued loans for many youth players. We should keep an eye on Musonda and Christensen, with the goal of integrating them in 17/18.

Q. What are our goals for next season?
Something we should set early in pre-season. Obviously the primary objective should be top 4, with maybe a cup win as we don't have European football to worry about. The ultimate goal will be to win the league, but whether or not we can achieve that remains to be seen.

I might add more questions later, but I think this covers most things. Let me know what you guys think.

Interesting thoughts Kick, enjoyed reading that!

Q. Azpi, LB or RB?
It's sad to see how different he is compared to the previous season. Sometimes I feel that he is not solely to blame. Terry's lack of pace has got us so much caught up in the counter that we've been leaking in goals like crazy.

I don't think we'd see a new right back unless Baba goes.

Q. Keep JT, buy a new CB or promote youth?
I think it's time to call it quits on him. His leadership skills are really important but still, he's not cut out for our play anymore. We need to bring in someone like Hummels.

Q. Should Terry leave, Ivanovic or Fabregas for Captain?
I've grown to like Fabregas as a captain myself. I agree, given the performances on the pitch so far, I'm more inclined to see him get it over Brana.

Q. 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1?
As cool as it is, a three man backline in the EPL feels too risky. Personally, I'm too tired of seeing the 4-2-3-1. I'd go for the 4-3-3 and see more pace in our play

Q. How do we fix the midfield?
I think Conte might surprise us with the effect he has on players. Oscar keeps on giving the vibe that he's peaked. I feel that we need a world class signing that can rejuvenate our midfield

Q. What do we do with Courtois, Matic, Baba and Oscar?
Courtois: I'd keep him around. Everyone has been having a bad season but he's made some really good saves throughout. I'm more concerned about Begovic. Despite how many games he's got as a backup reports suggest that he's not happy. I still believe that our backline is making our goalkeepers look worse than they really are.

I agree with the rest of your analysis.

Q. Pedro or Cuadrado?
Agreed. Pedro has been improving recently and his workrate and dedication is something we could really do with. Cuadrado just screams Salah.

Q. What do we do with the kids?
I think that as long as we have strong first team members, they can integrate well with the team. As long as there is a balance, there's no reason why we can't do it.

Q. What are our goals for next season?
Treble. Nuff said Wink
