Arsenal 3 - 0 West Ham United

Post by Jay29 on Sat Mar 14, 2015 5:25 pm

A good game with some wonderfully created goals. That was probably one of the better Arsenal performances at home I've seen this season, and it was the perfect follow-up to Monday's win at Old Trafford.

Wenger made some changes, no doubt with an eye on Tuesday's game in Monaco. Chambers came in for Bellerin at right back, Ramsey replaced Cazorla in midfield, Walcott got a chance at right wing in light of Chamberlain's injury and Giroud came back in for Welbeck. Any worries that the changes would disrupt our rhythm at all were unfounded as we produced some good fluid football in the first half against a pretty solid West Ham team.

That football created a couple of good opportunities to take the lead. Walcott had two opportunities in an inside right position - his preferred goalscoring position - but was unable to find the right finish on both occasions. A third chance came his way after Adrian palmed Ozil's shot towards him, but he lost his balance at the vital moment and end up scuffing it over the bar. A sharper Walcott with some more games behind him probably buries at least one of those chances.

As it was, it felt like we would have a frustrating end to the first half where we were on top and only lacking a goal. West Ham had some decent moves down our right hand side since Chambers struggled with his positioning, but bar Nolan shooting straight at Ospina they didn't have a chance of note. Giroud's goal was timely as well as brilliant. The interchange between Ramsey and Ozil saw Giroud cut onto his left roof and finish emphatically into the far corner.

The second half was more difficult to begin with as West Ham had a good 10-15 minute spell of pressure. Curiously, they swapped Downing and Jarvis over and decided to attack Monreal instead of the struggling Chambers. For a while, Monreal had a tough time one-v-one against Jarvis, but nothing troubling really came from it. They had a few corners that we defend well, and eventually we managed to clear our lines and regain control over the game.

It felt like we needed a second goal to really kill the game. It sounds strange, but I thought our defence was having to do too much work, especially Koscielny who mopped up behind several times in the second half. I don't think we did a good job preventing through passes behind our defence to West Ham's pacey forwards, and Alex Song was having far too much influence for West Ham for comfort.

Once we got that second goal, though, the game was over. It was another well worked goal, this time between Giroud and Ramsey, our two best players on the day. From there, Arsenal could have scored a lot more if they really wanted to. The third was excellent, too, and was a nice way to cap off a good day's work.

Overall, it was a very pleasing win and performance. Not perfect - Alexis had a disappointing game, while Walcott's finishing and Chamber's defending weren't good enough - but enjoyable to watch. That's now five wins in a row in the league and that puts us within a point of City in second having played a game more. If we keep this form up, we can continue to look up the table while distancing ourselves from the chasing back. Newcastle away next week will be tricky but definitely winnable, while a win over Liverpool in the first week of April would go a long way towards strengthening our grip on third place.

Before then, we have the Monaco tie to wrap up on Tuesday. Every shred of logic I have is telling me not to bother hoping of something special, but *bleep* it, we've nothing to lose, are in very good form and with Shcalke sticking four past Madrid at the Bernabau and PSG scoring twice at Stamford Bridge, why can't we score three against Monaco?

Walcott probably would have had a hat-trick today if he started more regularly. We know he can cock-up a few times with his chances and his touches, he needs that confidence. Confidence player.

Alexis was disappointing. Definitely needs to step it up for the Monaco game. Ramsey on the other hand was BOSS. Easily MOTM. Giroud is so undervalued. Caz waz clazz when he came on.
Overall nice win. Thumbs up

I'm still baffled why Ozil didn't shoot...

A decent performance, with a few encouraging displays from some players, and a discouraging one from Theo Walcott, IMO. Giroud is in one of his good stretches, and that's fantastic. Kos looked good. Ramsey looks like he's starting to fill back into his 2013-2014 form, too.

Third place. You know, I think a lot of us figured it'd be a Man City / Chelsea top 2 no matter what ... so when you consider that it'd mid-March, and we're in third place, a point behind City, honestly we all have to admit that it's a pretty respectable position. We've dropped points along the way that we should not have dropped. But there's a reason why the WOB is silent right now. We're doing well, and we're not relying on any 1-2 players.

True - weird decision, but though he sometimes goes for goal in those situations, a killer instinct in the box isn't really part of his, err, arsenal, I guess.

Very good game, now if we can perform the same way at Monaco. We must go all out against Monaco, and Ozil cant be afraid to shot. Its a Arsenal tradition never shoot and walk everything in. Laughing

I think Chambers should start against Monaco he created chances made some nice runs and bossed the game.
If we were looking to score goals then we should have him at RB.

^^ uhm, no.

He was poor y'day. Jarvis got in behind him many a times. Yes, he did well going forward, put in some good crosses, but that's nothing Bellerin can't do.

Fantastic result and a very good performance.

8 wins in the last 9 Premier League games and 21 different scorers this season. Third in the league, a point behind second, into the FA Cup semi-finals.

Thought Giroud and Ramsey were outstanding.

Onto Monaco!

We have so much depth this season. We are at a critical point now and for once it isn't bothering me that we have a huge match every few days.

Great performance and hopefully can put us on a good run til GW34 Wink
