LFP | J32 | FC Barcelona vs Valencia CF

vs
FC Barcelona vs Valencia CF
Camp Nou (Barcelona) | Sat, Apr 18 | 16:00 CET

With a healthy lead established in the European tie against the French champions in midweek, we now welcome the visit of fourth placed Valencia to Catalonia in a game where Barca will have to win to maintain their grip on top spot while Valencia will be coming to bolster their chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season with a good result.

Barca will be expecting to win at home, but history tells us that this won't be easy, not by a long stretch. Barca lost at home to Valencia last year in a game that was played at the exact same time as this one will be tomorrow. Furthermore, Barca also lost their last home match played at this time in the Liga against Malaga in February. Something about these early Saturday kickoffs that seem to trouble Barca but it's a record to set straight in this one as no more points can be afforded to be dropped with the title race heating up as we go into the final games of the season.

Vermaelen won't be ready to make his debut here although there will be late fitness tests regarding the availability of Alves and Iniesta. Enzo Perez and Piatti will be missing for the visitors while Gaya is also a slight doubt to take part because of injury.

My predicted lineup:

Bravo
Alves --- Pique --- Mascherano --- Alba
Rakitic --- Busquets --- Xavi
Messi --- Suarez --- Neymar

Lol at starting Xavi in these kinds of games, how many games does it take Scrubrigue to realize Xavi can't play games like this? Messi is freaking covering Xavi in there lmao.

We have no midfield. A clear penalty not given on Adraino. This ref is shit.
Messi should have scored that sitter.
Suarez finishing though

Please don't start xavi in this kind of high intense game. He is perfect for 70 Mins sub.

The problem is not that Xavi is starting, a fully rested Xavi can do this, the problem is that he is starting alongside Busquets and Masche. If you're going to play Xavi it can't be with a double pivot.

Our midfield right now:

Busquets - Sergi - Masche

Rinus Michels rolling in his grave.

guys we are exhausted, a game to not look back on but also don't look too much into it.

xavi or no xavi we would of lacked intensity due to fatigue, a victory is all we needed and we got it.

valencia tired themselves out by the 40th minute as-well, not to credit ourselves too much for our second half performance.

We got owned in the first half.Cant remember the last time we were owned that bad.I thought Enrique had learned from the last game but he again played Masch DM and Busquets CM.For whatever reason,Busquets plays pathetic at CM.I just cant fathom why.A player of his quality and intelligence cant be so bad.
The game also reiterated why pressing is such a huge part of the modern game.I cant remember the last time we pressed like Valencia did in the first half.Valencia owned us thanks in large part to their relentless pressing.Pressing is such a great tactical weapon in the modern game and it just adds a different dimension to a team.Unfortunately we cant press anywhere near remotely as well as Valencia did.
It is a shame as we would be so much more dangerous if we did.

I thought Alves had an immense game. With Alves, there is always the intangibles.
He was the only one in the team who matched Valencia's intensity, aggression and heart throughout the game.Even in the first half when we were getting owned,Alves kept fighting and showed once more what a tremendous competitor he is.And that is an intangible which has an effect on the entire team.Second half he was just a monster and dominated that flank.
In football,I have not seen a greater competitor than Alves.
Tennis has Nadal and Serena,F1 had Schumacher and football has Alves.

Dani was indeed great (made 10 successful tackles), although he did also commit a lot of fouls (7) in threatening areas in our half and was extremely lucky that scrub ref didn't book him.

Adriano on the other hand produced a disgusting performance. He should not start any of the next 6 finals and neither should Xavi.

We play some dog turd football at times, but at this stage its too late to hope to look nice. We need points to win the league so that's what we got to have.

At least unlike at Sevilla, he didnt give away our lead because we refuse to keep hold of the ball. Much better job in second of keeping the ball, even if it seemed like everyone on the pitch (Valencia aswell as us) fatigued really quickly.

Have to complain about that horrible starting midfield though. Come on, we dont know by now Xavi needs players around him who he pass with and who can move in front of him. Mascherano and Busquets?

Is Rafinha injured or just not trusted?

Reporter: They made you very uncomfortable in the first half.

Mascherano: Yes, part of that is to Valencia's credit. It's something we're going to have to analyze. They played a superior first half. It was a very fast goal. We were not very organized or had much control of the game. They knew how to pressure us and we were not able to cope with it, and they were very dangerous in the transitions.

R: Some are attributing this to the lack of rest the team has had

M: We could cling to that as an excuse but it's a pretty worthless exercise at this stage in the league. I think it is what it is and we need to be able to surpass this challenge.

R: After the 2nd half Adriano left the pitch and Mathieu played as a left back

M: I don't like to talk about individual names, the general gist was that we were making a mistake in our approach and we should try to regain more control to make it harder for them to transition into an attack.

R: Does it have any effect to go before or after the rival?

M: The important thing is to win, now we need to analyze what went wrong to make sure they don't happen in the next match, I think we were able to compete and we need to keep this up until the end of the season.
