Farfan trying to take credit for my scouting.

Andre Gomes, Silva & William should all be starters for Portugal before the Euros begin.

it wont matter anyway. Portugal allways have top class mf players. but they never have good defenders of strikers.

Be a good laugh when they are still shit and everyone tries to claim they are not a good team when Ronaldo can't do nothing with them.

not as funny as your attempt to convince us that Argentina = Portugal last summer and that messi flopping with what's available to him is similar to Ronldo's case with portugal . Laughing

Again you are misinterpreting my position.

I said he had no excuse not getting out of the group stage and he didn't and if Messi did the same thing with the same players there would have been uproar.

Which is true, i genuinely can't wait for the players you are hyping now are called scrubs when they can't help him achieve tournament success and the excuses start rolling out.

i stand corrected, you actually argued that the backbone of the Portuguese team ( defense + mid ) is actually better than Argentina's by a mile . Laughing
@Great Leader Sprucenuce wrote:Was reading the now locked Ronaldo 2 goals thread.

Something i really don't understand is how Portugal are some how a bad team yet Argentina are great....

Portugal's back 4 and midfield is miles betters than Argentina's its not even funny, yes their forwards apart from Ronaldo are crap but despite common consensus from GL who has also brought us such classics like "City have the best squad in the PL by a mile and Chelsea's squad is crap Mourinho is a hero" A team does not just exist of forwards.

The whole team has to be taken into consideration.... Pepe, Alves, Coentrao and Moutinho would walk into the Argentina team blind folded..... but i suppose that doesn't matter because they are not scoring goals.  Rolling Eyes

Both Portugal and Argentina are great teams and if Messi or/and Ronaldo don't do what is expected of them they have flopped as hard as anyone.

Simple as.

i'd like to see a portuguese midfield that's better than Di maria-Mascherano-Banega Laughing
let's not even get into the number 10 options for Argentina ( Pastore, Pereyra , Lamela ) of which Portugal has none . Laughing

by the time the players we're hyping are old enough to make an impact , Ronaldo would be long gone .

Di Maria-Mascherano-Banega didn't exist at that World Cup and i'd still argue Portugal's defense is better anyway.

It's alright bringing up these no 10 names now but they were not used at that World Cup, Messi was the no 10.... it's just a wonderful way of using hindsight because most of what you are arguing didn't exist then.

Fact of the matter is, that Portugal side where more than good enough to get through *bleep* Yanks and Ghana Laughing but yet excuses were made, same excuses which wouldn't be made for most of the other top players.

Anyone think Benzema would have excuses if France were shit? like *bleep* would he Laughing

You are fapping over these Portuguese players now and i can guarantee as quick as you have grown to like them, you will quickly turn on them when they don't produce the goods for Ronaldo Laughing

Jesus Christ. Portugal's defense and midfield as good as Argentina's? Laughing

Only 3 players (including CR) would make that Argentina squad ffs. Maybe only Germany (and that's debatable) has a better team.

a midfield consisting of Di Maria and Mascherano is still better than any Portuguese midfield .
and the fact that they left out Banega and the number 10s i mentioned is only a testament to the depth of that team .

Bruno alves is washed up and Contrao is rarely fit . and oh , Ricardo *bleep* Carvalho still starts for them . Laughing
current Argentina defense is so much better it's not even a debate imo .

and why are you acting like we turned on the portuguese players after the wc ? Laughing
the only player anyone ever rated as a WC talent in that portuguese team was Moutinho .nobody expcted anything from a Nani who played like 10 games in 3 years, a donkey CF who averages 5 goals a season in the shitty Portuguese league , a washed up "box to box " past his expiration date in Meireles , a B level DM in Veloso etc....

the only one who rated this cast of players was you , just so you can conveniently claim that Ronaldo's underperformance was inexcusable .

I agree wholeheartedly with Farfan on the Portugal/Argentina debate here. No way is Portugal as good as Argentina and I think Argentina is more of a choke artist than Holland. Why exactly does Mole think Portugal squad can compare to Argentina is beyond me. It is actually terribly obvious. That being said, they did disappoint quite a bit of people.

As for the Bernardo Silva guy, saw him 5 times last season. All in the UCL. Which is enough to say he is gonna be world class. I have spoken...

I never said they were better though, i said their defence is better and I stand by that it was. Farfan is bringing up now which isn't relevant considering I was talking about that WC.

Also ignoring completely my point that there was no excuse to get out of that group and there wasn't, it wasn't like they had superstar team to overcome it was *bleep* USA and Ghana Laughing

Also that you replace Ronaldo with any WC player and they fail, they would receive constant criticism. Don't deny it because there's many examples of players getting shit for achieving more.

Also Farfan acts like the midfields were worlds apart, another example of Ronaldo getting a pass for everytime he fails. Di Maria hardly played that tournament and the midfield 3 for most of the KOs was Mascherano-Perez-Gago but I'm supposed to believe that it was world's above Portugals like *bleep* it was.

But that detracts from the original point that Portugal were more than good enough to get through that group and once again like everytime Ronaldo fails he gets a pass or/and the blame shifts to his team mates and then he takes all the credit for what they do when it goes well.

The same thing will happen with these kids that are being hyped now, because it's been happening his entire career. He either gets all the credit or none of the blame.

I wouldn't have a problem with this if the same unfair approach was applied to every other great player but it isn't.

Re: Bernardo Silva : the next Portuguese star ?

you can't just say that Portugal's defense and midfield are miles better than Argentina's and expect people not to call you out on it or not see through the obvious agenda.

at the moment of making the thread, ( group stage ) Argentina's midfield consisted of Masch , Di mara , and Biglia . a midfield that you rated as miles inferior to the portuguese one consisting of Veloso-Meireles-Moutinho .
but apparently , i'm way off base for saying that the Argentina midfield is simply beter , and you're within the realm of reason for suggesting that portugal's midfield is miles better " it's not even funny " ? Laughing

there is no history of what you're describing ever happening . when exactly was a group of portuguese players rated as world class ,only to be written off as scrubs afterwards to justify Ronaldo's " flopping " ?
the last time Ronaldo played next to world class portuguese players , he was easily of the best players of the tournament , at age 19.

and Btw , Ronaldo, just like the majority of world class players , is actually subjected to an unfairly highly standard imo .

let's forget for a second that he was affected by a nagging injury that evidently impacted his game in the latter part of the season ,
just what the hell was he supposed to do in the last wc ? Portugal went out on goal average .

was he to blame for Pepe's early red card and Germany's complete domination of the game ?
was he to blame for the US' surprising domination of the midfield ? didn't he deliver the crucial cross that kept Portugal in the tournament ?
didn't he score the winner vs Ghana ? was he suppsoed to score 4 more goals to overcome the deficit against Germany ?

Rups is actually correct in saying Portugal doesn't have much excuses for not doing better than they did in the WC based on the expectations they were came to Brasil with. But expectations doesn't always represent reality and Ghana and USA actually had good teams or at least teams that know how to play football at this stage.

And then comes to the issue of who gave them these expectations and what was it based on? Their players plying their trade in Europe? Ronaldo? Their form coming into the WC? All 3 were subject to criticism.

And Cristiano hardly gets any leeway. Like Lionel, the harsher the criticism, the better. There is even a general consensus he doesn't play well in big matches either. I think you would find posters hold back their fingers from full assault due to the fact he actually was playing injured. Well, some posters. Other(s) compare him to Danny Ings.

But-but but, Tiago Gomes, guys. Sad

On Topic, the guy plays like a less defensive version of Joao Moutinho. Hopefully he continues to grow as he has been. Portugal has had an upsurge of player production recently. Will be intresting to see the stature of their team in the coming years. hmm
