van Gaal says United lack star power

Louis van Gaal says Manchester United need to make a “Galactico” signing if they want to compete with Europe’s best, writes David McDonnell in San Jose.

United broke the British transfer record by paying Real Madrid £59.7million for Angel Di Maria, a move that failed with the playmaker set to leave for Paris Saint-Germain.

But with the new Premier League season less than a fortnight away, Van Gaal has admitted United must make another marquee signing to compete with Barcelona, Real, Chelsea and Manchester City.

However, the Dutchman, speaking on United’s US tour, ruled out bringing Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

“Chelsea have Eden Hazard, he can always make goals,” said Van Gaal.

“Manchester City have Aguero, it’s the same type. Barcelona have Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez. We, as Manchester United, have to compete with these clubs. So we have to look also for these kind of players.

“When it is possible to buy, for a reasonable price, players from that level, we shall do that, because they are better.

“So I think with Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian, we are better than last year.

“But we have to be much better and we can use much more creativity.

“And so we have to compare. Ashley Young had a fantastic season last time, but he is not a Neymar, and we have to compete with that kind of class.”

Van Gaal dismissed re-signing Ronaldo, 30, as too expensive, adding: “Of course I would love it. But that’s not possible. You have Ronaldo and then you have how much Manchester United want to spend...”

Messi is probably the only player he would accept he isnt as good as.
