Pretty sure it’s possible to buy other players also. The squad needs a whole new foundation, and a GK is part of that. If it can get better, they should improve.

The reason we’re in this mess has been the complacency and unwillingness to improve in areas that worked the year before.

on one side, its very rare that a player in the middle of the season fighting for titles will come out and say they are seeking pastures anew. how many times have we heard players talk about they are staying and they leave

on the other side, despite our terrible performance this season its too early to get confident with regards to signing new stars, this isn't 2004, a major part of our moves will be to sell and make some money first. how many times have media outlets reported "player x undergoing real madrid medical", only to find player x still with his team months after the reports

yes, we need to keep our options open but the goalie should be our last bit of business after more pressing issues. and right now its still way too early to gauge our moves

Battle? Laughing You took the L regarding De Gea long time ago unless you are willing to pay 130 million Euros for a GK. Laughing

i think the idea was to sign Kepa for 20 mil, a young keeper to grow behind Keylor like you did Mats, but Zidane veto'd the transfer. Now he has a new deal and a high release clause.

so in this ever inflating market, there is a keen interest to secure a top 5 GK for the next couple of years.

i mess around with Thibu but De Gea is the best GK in the world. he is the real target even now. I think we will go for him again this summer, even if he cost 60/70 mil. we are going to torch the next transfer window anyway

Riiight. In a world where virgil van jik goes for 75 mil you will persuade woodward and co. to sell the best goalkeeper in the world for 60/70 mil.  Rolling Eyes

As for courtois, I thought Madrid wanted to improve their team, not go backwards. They already have a much better keeper.

Has he signed a new contract yet? You're getting very close to an Alexis Sanchez situation - from Arsenal's perspective - the longer he goes without putting pen to paper.

Mr Nick09 wrote:I do not know how much De Gea or Courtois would cost, both will have 1 year left of their deals so 60/70 is not an unreasonable price for an elite GK. The asking price will decide which player we sign but if it's too high there is a talented keeper like Alisson Becker that we are also looking at.

We have an option to extend. So its not 2019, its 2020 in case of ddg. Make no mistake, Woodward will laugh at your face if its anythng less than 150 mil in this crazy market especially considering how smuggish real acted last summer wrt Morata.

And dont bring out the because he is a goalkeeper and goalkeeper's cost lesss drivel either. That was ancient history. Those times are over. Back then forwards didnt use to go for 220 mil.  Defenders didnt go for 75 mil either. Great lords from Paris have showed us lesser souls true light and we'll all follow that.

Good to know Glory, we won't waste our time with him this summer then. Which explains why Courtois name has been mentioned more and Alisson as well

Paying 135 for a GK would be the stupidest thing lol

Do you have to though? Navas is just 31 ffs. That's like the 27 for an outfield player. Why not get some highly rated kid (if I am pulling names out of FM an Alban Lafont or a Rajkovic) for really cheap, develop them and for the time being focus on other immediate positions.

Kane (although Levy will take you to the cleaners on that one) and Hazard. Or Icardi and Salah (cheaper options). That's where you should be looking at.

As for ddg, he has been an immense player for us (arguably our best ever gk in sheer ability terms) and never threw a fit even when those moves int he past collapsed. So, if his heart's really set in Madrid (as the papers make us believe), you can come back for him in 2019 with 70-80 mil and he can leave.

Post by The Demon of Carthage Fri Feb 09, 2018 12:08 pm

In all honesty Glory, I don't think Madrid will ever go for him. Not now and not in 2019. Florentino lost interest after the fax machine fiasco and I suspect he doesn't want to have anything to do with United ever again. Plus, and if I'm not mistaken, I read somewhere that there was a condition in DDG's contract which he signed right after the Madrid move had fallen through that stated that Madrid could come back for him the following summer and get him for €60-something million, yet Madrid didn't raise a finger to bring him at the time. But honestly I'm not completely sure about the legitimacy of this information so don't take my word for it.

As for why these rumors are always coming back to haunt you (and us in a way), it's because DDG has become the best goalkeeper in the world and way better than any of his rivals, and most importantly is Spanish, from Madrid and the Spanish NT's number one goalkeeper. He has the perfect resumé to make Florentino salivate under normal circumstances. But like I said, and for a myriad of reasons, I don't think Madrid will ever bother you again about him...or any other United player for that matter.

Courtois has an agreement that he only moves clubs if Hazard moves with him. Nick are you ready to accept that the Hazard transfer is happening?

Our whole team was mediocre the whole season. Doesn't mean much in the big picture.

Thing is... I don't understand why Brazil were shooting high on Courtois. He struggles getting down and always has. You need to beat him low... just hard and low. Yet these idiot Brazilian strikers header excluded) kept shooting to Courtois' strengths.
