USA gun violence thread

Post by Firenze on Thu Oct 01, 2015 10:51 pm

not too many details out there atm.

A shooter killed as many as 10 people and wounded 20 others at the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, on Thursday morning.

The shooter, a 20-year-old male, was killed in a shoot out with police. None of the identities of those involved have been released by authorities. It is believed only one shooter was involved in the incident.

The shooting happened in a classroom, according to Ray Schoufler, the Douglas County Fire Marshal. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office received the 911 call at 10:38 a.m., local time.

Kortney Moore, a student at the college, told NRToday the shooter asked people in the classrom their religion before he shot them.

shooter apparently posted about planning on doing this on popular internet message board 4chan yesterday

Oregon law does not require permit to purchase, registration of firearms, or licensing of owners. Oregon received a D+ for its gun laws on most recent state scorecard by the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

that just seems insane to me

Its sad that i just saw 'US Campus' and immediately thought it was a shooting. My condolences to all the deceased and their families.

I'm curious as to what could be the solution to this? How can they eliminate (or greatly reduce, if you want) the number of these incidents? Total ban on guns? Even so how would they go about retrieving firearms from every person who owns it? (I imagine some ppl will retaliate)

Rest in peace to those who lost their lives.

It is such a shame that these keep happening in the US.

Hope they at least stop socially awkward plebs getting hold of lethal weapons by the time I finally decide to move to Murica.

The suspect, known by his online alias 'el GUNNER' arrived - probably illegally - from overseas.

And now someone will, again, tell the world how this wouldn't have happened if everyone on Campus had been armed...
Incredibly sad.

We can start by trying to identify all the variables that are constant in all these cases. There might not be a singular cause, but isolating one factor and nullifying it might help.

Obviously thats been attempted with proposals of gun control, and the Americans reacted by buying more guns than ever.

But you know, America hasn't always had this problem, while they have always had guns, so id guess there is other stuff going on.

Maybe mind altering drugs (legal prescribed ones as well as illegal) is something we need to talk about, but there is as much resistance to that as there is to banning guns.

A people that constantly suffer from the same issue, identify it, refuse to do anything about it and expect different results in the future. Definition of insanity. There's certainly some element of darwinism happening here on a societal level.

I wonder if there are any schools/universities in the US that do 'mass shooting drills'? Seems to be more dangerous than nukes and fires, and they do/used to do drills for those.

Yeah all school campuses from my knowledge are gun free zones which I think is one of the main reasons these perps choose schools to do mass shootings at. Less chance of people shooting back.

It's not guns, it's assault weapons. Do you really need a weapon capable of killing 30 people in 90 seconds to go hunting? For anything at all? Keep your guns, but these things belong in a war theater, not in a civilized country. Australia should be looked at as an example.

I think because most of them own guns in anticipation of a civil war type scenario, it does actually matter to them a lot how deadly the weaponry is.
