Arsenal vs Manchester United PL 2015/16

Comeback?

Team news:
Arsenal: Wilshere, Welbeck, Rosicky, Koscielny, Arteta and Flamini all unavailable for selection while Coquelin has reacted well from his premature return and is fit to play.

Man Utd: McNair, Shaw and Rojo are out with injuries. While Herrera is in doubt.

Louis van Gaal and Arsene Wenger press conferences

Scouting report by Michael Cox

It still feels like Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United are a work in progress, and yet ominously they will start this weekend on top of the Premier League table.

United are averaging the second-highest possession share in the division - behind Arsenal - and therefore both managers will be determined to see their midfield dominate on Sunday.

One of the most significant developments in United’s season has been the return of David De Gea to the starting XI, after his widely anticipated transfer to Real Madrid collapsed. Capable of outstanding reaction saves, De Gea helps the side tactically as he’s comfortable playing behind a high defensive line, and is excellent in terms of distribution too, ensuring United build methodically from the back.

Van Gaal has settled on a surprise centre-back combination which features Dutchman Daley Blind alongside Chris Smalling. Blind arrived at the club as a holding midfielder or left back, and lacks the physical strength you expect from a central defender - Southampton’s Graziano Pelle caused him plenty of problems a fortnight ago. Blind’s positional sense is good, though, and he provides the passing qualities Smalling lacks.

The broken leg sustained by Luke Shaw, combined with Marcos Rojo’s probable absence, means Blind might be moved to left back if Van Gaal feels Phil Jones is up to full speed following his injury.

United played their best football last season in a 4-3-3 formation, but Van Gaal has decided to flip his midfield triangle and deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation this year. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin all offer good passing quality from the deep roles, with Ander Herrera the biggest loser if the 4-3-3 has been ditched permanently. It means captain Wayne Rooney has played as a No 10 in recent weeks, despite starting the season as United’s main striker.

Mata scouting report

Creativity comes from Juan Mata, who drifts inside from the right into pockets of space to receive forward passes, while left-sided Memphis Depay also moves into the centre, but usually having received the ball out wide - he loves dribbling and then shooting from range. It means United need their full backs overlapping to provide width, and therefore United can be caught out by counter-attacks into wide areas, as Swansea proved in a 2-1 victory.

Up front, Anthony Martial has been a revelation. Signed from Monaco, the Frenchman loves collecting the ball in inside-left positions before beating his opponent and bending the ball into the far corner, so comparisons with Thierry Henry were inevitable.

Arsenal are soft, they always have been under Wenger. They're succebtable at being rash when they're bullied. Also, I don't know if anyone's watched any of their recent games? They're shockingly bad at the back. I know that means nothing when United come to town but if they defend like they have done recently we'll be out of sight by half time.

MZX7 wrote:Arsenal players have had one extra day of rest. Our players seemed exhausted at the end of the Wolfsburg game. A very tough away outing. Would be lucky to get a draw. Sanchez is back in his scoring form, Giroud is in a good form and Walcott has found his bearings in the striker role.

Very, very tough fixture given the timing. I just hope the International break after this game doesn't result in injuries.

Great work Urban.

We are unpredictable and could end up losing by 3 own goals or, win by few goals. I fear we will kick start Rooney's season and let him do what he wants.

I think a draw would like a win, Sad considering how bad we play against them and how lucky they are. Wink

It's like when we play Chelsea: no matter how many logical reasons I can think of that support us winning, I just can't look beyond another defeat. We'll struggle to score, they'll get a jammy one (probably Rooney, though wouldn't be surprised if "new Henry" Martial scores a worldie), we'll throw everything at them, then get caught on the break.

Still, win the game and we'll be two points off the top (assuming City beat Newcastle). It seems like United are going to be amongst the challengers this year, so it's a much more important game than usual. If we want to challenge for the title we need to beat our main rivals at home.

Koscielny's injury was unfortunately timed (when is it not?). Gabriel and Mertesacker should work okay but they need big games after mid-week. No Arteta or Flamini so Coquelin better be 100% fit otherwise we're going to struggle in midfield. Hopefully Walcott can give Daley Blind a tough game if he plays centre back, though I suspect he'll have a lot of protection from their midfield.

There is not much to say other than that.

Great work urban

Unfortunately I just can't see anything other than a loss. It will basically go down the way Jay explained it Laughing

Give me a draw and I'll run away with it now.

Wenger. It was disappointing to lose, but overall every competition is different, you have to go in a different competition in a different state of mind
"If I say now that we are three points behind Man United, playing Man United at home and I don’t believe that we can win the Premier League, what would you [the media] tell me? You will slaughter me."

“I don’t explain the fact that we lost the two games in the Champions League by being inferior. We’ve played two teams who accepted our superiority at the start [and played defensively].

“If you play offensive football and you lose, everybody kills you. But if you sit for 10 games with a team which refuses to play then you will fall asleep and everybody says: ‘why don’t you attack?’"

It's an important game, so I'm guessing Cech won't play

Its a must win for us if we don't, If we loose then I can see us going into these kind of runs where we struggle to gain consistency until January. A win here would be a good response to Tuesday's disaster. We have enough in the team to create chances and win the game. Last year we bossed them but we din't finish the chances, I hope we are more efficient this time.

its the defending that worries me especially after what we saw midweek. so far we have been giving cheap goals away, watching us you just get a feeling that we will give the other team an easy goal. The danger with Yanited, is with Depay, Martial. I hope that Bellerin and Mertesacker aren't left exposed against them or else we will concede one or two which is suicide in these sort of games.

If we win tomorrow, we go into the international break with 2 points behind City...

If the team needed anymore incentive than that....

RG posted this in the General Discussion so I just wanted to make sure everyone got the line-ups:

United: De Gea, Young, Smalling, Blind, Darmian, Carrick, Schweinsteiger, Mata, Rooney, Memphis, Martial

Arsenal: Cech; Bellerin, Mertesacker, Gabriel, Monreal; Coquelin, Cazorla; Ramsey, Ozil, Alexis; Walcott

The possibility of Per vs Martial makes me think we'll concede at least once.
