Quique Sanchez Flores and Arsene Wenger press conferences
Scouting report by Michael Cox
Newly-promoted Watford boast the most cosmopolitan squad in the Premier League, and for their opening Premier League match this season, manager Quique Sanchez Flores’ starting XI featured 11 different nationalities.
Nevertheless, the Spanish coach has created a harmonious, well-organised side. Tellingly, Watford have scored the joint-fewest goals in the division (6), but also conceded the joint-fewest (7).
They defend in a good, deep, compact shape in two banks of four, then break quickly through the wingers and hit longer balls towards the forwards. They also attempt a higher proportion of their shots from outside the box than any other Premier League team.
Quique Sánchez Flores
Heurelho Gomes has started every match in goal, and is capable of great saves having ironed out the errors that marred his spell with Spurs. He often comes for crosses, taking the pressure off his centre-backs, Craig Cathcart and Sebastian Prödl.
They’re both good in the air but average in possession, so Gomes usually kicks long rather than playing out from the back. Right-back Allan Nyom is a solid defender and attacks powerfully too, although has been struggling with a knee injury this week.
Juan Carlos Paredes, a very attack-minded player, could be his replacement. On the opposite side, Chelsea loanee Nathan Ake started at Bournemouth last time out. A steady, composed player whose future is probably in a central position, Ake at left-back allows Ikechi Anya to push forward to become a winger.
Watford’s midfield is based around Etienne Capoue, who sits deep in a right-of-centre position, breaks up play and boasts a good passing range too. Valon Behrami provides the energy alongside, although his recent suspension allowed Ben Watson to come into the side, playing a similar role.
Capoue
Much of Watford’s passing flows down the flanks. Anya is an energetic, mazy dribbler whereas Almen Abdi prefers to drift inside and play passing combinations with other players, and can shoot from range.
Upfront, Troy Deeney wears number nine but plays the link role neatly, and has assisted three goals this season - all for Odion Ighalo, who plays on the shoulder of the last defender and runs in behind. Watford play good football, but are at their best when attacking directly, so concentration will be vital for Arsenal’s centre-backs.

Grrwood wrote:It would be just typical that after how excellent Gomes has been so far that he has a flop against Arsenal who will be giving him stick all game. Like others have said I just can't see us winning this one, but would love to see signs of more attacking intent and Deeney to be involved in the game more.

Behrami to get booked for a "strong but fair" challenge on one of their flair midfielders.

Excellent preview Urban.
Is resting Sanchez even a option?
I dont care about CL game, Wenger must play the best team and win this game. We all know how much Sanchez hates it when he doesn't play.

I care about the CL game. We need to set things right in CL. We are better than our position reflects.
Without taking them likely and with all due respect, we might as well stop watching Arsenal if they can't beat a Watford side after dismantling a United side.

WHAT A PREVIEW WORLD CLASS STUFF URBAN
Put out the strongest team you got, don't care about the CL, we'll somehow beat Bayern in one of those games anyhow, because that's just our style.

Watford are very well organised, they don't allow you much time and space if any at all despite that we have created some decent chances. We should be at least one up, Ramsey should have had at least one.We might need Giroud soon since Theo is redundant in these sort of games. These sort of games tend to finish with a score of 1-0 or 2-1, very little room for errors.

Re: Watford vs Arsenal PL 2015/16
We got there in the end. The first half was uncomfortable, what with Watford's forwards causing problems with direct passes and our d-line being caught high up. Our attack was a bit flat, and it looked like it'd be one of those days where we toil away then make a mistake and lose 1-0.
The second half was much better. We looked more solid at the back, and our quality going forward told in the end. Bellerin was excellent down the right. Happy that Ramsey and Giroud got goals.

Re: Watford vs Arsenal PL 2015/16
Smashing win, that wasn't easy but we made it look easy especially in the second half. Watford only had longs balls and they offered nothing interesting going forward.Ozil and Santi were very good, Ozil's assist for Giroud's goal was beautiful. Ramsey and Sanchez were very good as well. They never stopped moving around, giving the opposition very little rest, Ramsey should have got two today. I think he might go on a run now he is got one.
The only concern at the moment is that we tend to loose confidence when teams stop us from playing. Santi sees little of the ball, the entire team becomes nervous. The likes of Ozil and Theo are nowhere to be seen, we loose control of the game and it becomes scrappy. We shouldn't be loosing confidence like that ffs, we have world class players in our team so we should have the belief that we can beat anyone.

Re: Watford vs Arsenal PL 2015/16
We've been that way over the last couple of years. As soon as a goal goes in, we look a completely different team; confident, efficient and ruthless. But until they get that goal the team can get anxious.
At least today we had the option of Giroud off the bench to freshen things up front. We know that if Walcott has an off day or just doesn't get the service we can change it.
I guess we'll see as the season goes on which players are going to change a game when it's not going our way. We know Alexis can do it, but the others in the team will need to have that ability, too, because we'll come up against plenty of teams who do what Watford do, but be more dangerous in attack.
Everton at home and Swansea away our next two in the league. Both teams can punish you if you don't play well.

We win it like any other games, we need to maintain the momentum and confidence. Getting a good result against Bayern will only increase the confidence in the team and give us a fighting chance of getting out of the group.

Re: Watford vs Arsenal PL 2015/16
Next three league games are crucial.
Everton, Swansea, Spurs.
Top half teams, these are usually the games we mess up looking back on the past few seasons.
If we get 9 out of 9 in those 3 matches and providing our important players stay fit throughout the season, I say we're ready to win the PL title.
Come at me.

Re: Watford vs Arsenal PL 2015/16
It's so far so good, as far challenging goes. 19 points so far is a big improvement over the 14 points we had at this stage last season. We're three points off the top of the table, and every major contender has lost at least twice already, which suggests we could see a lower number of points being needed to win the league.
Ultimately, it'll be about picking up points consistently during both halves of the season. Previous years it's been a case of one bad half and one good half; either starting poorly and then ending strongly (11/12, 12/13, 14/15), or starting strongly and ending poorly (10/11, 13/14). It's not a coincidence that our poor runs coincide with injuries to key players, and that our good runs happen when our best players are fit.
For me, that's where the difference will be. If Cech, Coquelin, Cazorla, Ozil, Ramsey and Alexis stay fit for the majority of the season we'll have a chance. If we miss two or three for three months or more it'll be a struggle.
