Arsenal vs. Everton PL 2015/16 Arsenal                vs.                Arsenal vs. Everton PL 2015/16 Everton

The Season so Far

Arsenal have, without a doubt, had a difficult start to the campaign. Probably not as bad as some of the last years, but it has not been a rosy run by any stretch of imagination. We started on a high beating Chelsea in the Shield (1-0), lost at home to West Ham (0-2), won away at Palace (1-2), drew goalless with Liverpool at home and grabbed a Coloccini OG away at NUFC (0-1). We were creating a lot of chances, but not converting. Owen Gole was our top scorer for some time.

In all, not so bad an August, but then came a crappy September. 2-0 win over Stoke at home, back to back defeats away to Zagreb (2-1) and Chelsea (2-0), win at Leicester (5-2), and a fine 2-3 home loss to Olympiakos.

With that context, October has been much more positive. We produced among our best performances in years to put 3 past United at home, and then dug in deep to break down Watford and put 3 past a tough defense. Then we combined all of the good things from both games in a very respectable performance against Bayern at home for a 2-0 smash & grab.

So while sentiments are high, and rightly so, I want to use the goal-draughty August and the shitstorm September to bring things down a notch. We have had 3 good wins recently, and if we continue on the same path, we will do very well this season. We can start by winning against Everton and heaping the pressure on the Manchester clubs, who are currently sandwiching us and face each other later on Sunday.

Everton have been decent, if not stellar, this season. August saw them draw at home to Watford (2-2), win against Soton (3-0), lose at home to City (0:2) and grab a point at White Hart Lane (0-0). September was 3-1 vs Chelsea (Laughing) at home, goalless at Swansea and a 3-2 win at West Brom.

Don't be deceived by the 3-0 shocker last game day against United, or the 1-1 draw with Liverpool before that. Everton are still a very capable team and Roberto Martinez usually makes things interesting too.  Here's what he had to say:

"We'll have to do it in one of the hardest arenas in the league and against one of the hardest opponents. Look at what they've achieved in the last few weeks and especially against Bayern Munich, we know we're going to find a team in their best moment of confidence and belief.

"But in the same manner we need to look at ourselves and react to our performance at the weekend."

"I wouldn't say that a team as experienced in those European nights as Arsenal would suffer a hangover," he added. "I don't expect them to have any negative effect.

"If anything, they get an incredible momentum after that victory and they've got a big enough squad to find fresh legs if they need to and Arsene Wenger is the best man in doing that.

"Historically it's not a fixture we do too well in at our football club so it's another incentive for us."

Scouting Report by Michael Cox

Despite a difficult second season on Merseyside, Martinez has largely stuck with the same blueprint - continuing with his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation and a familiar group of players. That said, he has a habit of springing a surprise against Arsenal, like when he used a strikerless 4-3-3 in a 3-0 victory over the Gunners at Goodison Park 18 months ago.

Everton have suffered from major injury problems in defence this season, and while Martinez’s young reserves have performed extremely admirably when required, he’ll be pleased at the return of attacking right-back Seamus Coleman and captain Phil Jagielka.

John Stones has been in fine form and copes excellently against pace, so Theo Walcott might prefer to make runs in behind the 33 year-old Jagielka. Tim Howard has taken a higher starting position in recent years, ready to sweep and intercept balls in behind the defence. Left back Brendan Galloway is the only defender still deputising for an absent first-teamer, and while he’s been very composed defensively, he doesn’t offer anything like Leighton Baines’crossing quality.

Nevertheless, Everton’s full backs are instructed to attack, which means Gareth Barry and James McCarthy will hold their position in front of the defence, with the latter breaking into attack very sporadically.

This duo will attempt to play forward passes into the feet of midfielder Ross Barkley, who has been excellent so far this season after an underwhelming 2014/15. His spatial awareness is superb, he continually draws fouls from the opposition, and he’s added an end product to his game too. He’s already matched his goalscoring return from last season, and recorded more assists than the previous two campaigns combined.

Barkley’s relationship with forward Romelu Lukaku is particularly effective, as both like moving laterally to find space. Lukaku is clever at running the channels, particularly on the break, and Everton’s finest performance of the season thus far came in a 3-0 victory away at Southampton, when their goals were all extremely direct counter-attacks. Lukaku has a habit of getting caught offside too often, but his pace will be extremely dangerous on Saturday.

With the spine of the starting XI very predictable, Martinez’s only decisions are out wide. Here, he can call upon two natural wingers, in ex-Tottenham outside-right Aaron Lennon and the tricky Spaniard Gerard Deulofeu, who hit a fine equaliser here two seasons ago. Then there’s the option of two converted centre forwards, Arouna Kone and Steven Naismith.

Martinez will probably use one of each, with a winger on the right pushing back Nacho Monreal, and a forward on the left moving inside to support Lukaku. Again, however, Martinez might vary this - he’s been known to use Lukaku on the right against Arsenal, with the wily Naismith as a false centre forward.

Team News

Danny Welbeck (knee), Jack Wilshere (ankle) and Tomas Rosicky (knee) all remain sidelined, while Aaron Ramsey picked up a hamstring injury against Bayern and is facing a spell out of action. Ospina is also out.

Everton, meanwhile, could welcome back Tom Cleverley following an ankle problem, and Steven Pienaar and Bryan Oviedo are also nearing a return.

Stat Center

- Arsenal have lost only one of their last 16 Barclays Premier League meetings with Everton (W9 D6).
- However, the Toffees have lost only one of their last six BPL matches versus Arsenal with four of these fixtures ending in a draw (W1 L1).
- Arsenal’s joint Barclays Premier League record win (7-0) came against Everton; this was at Highbury in May 2005.
- Arsenal have had more touches in the opposition box than any other side in the Barclays Premier League this season (329).
- Everton have scored five goals courtesy of substitutes in the Barclays Premier League this season, more than any other side.
- Petr Cech has the best saves to shots ratio of any goalkeeper in the Barclays Premier League so far in 2015-16 (82.1%).
- Cech has now kept 167 Barclays Premier League clean sheets, only two away from David James’ record (169) in the competition.
- Olivier Giroud has netted four goals in the Gunners’ last four meetings with Everton in all competitions.
- Theo Walcott has been directly involved in 15 goals in his last 15 Barclays Premier League starts for Arsenal (12 goals, three assists).
- Romelu Lukaku has now scored 47 Barclays Premier League goals – only four players have reached 50 BPL goals before the age of 23 and the Belgian will become the fifth if he scores three more goals this season.
- Arsenal and Tottenham have the joint best defense in the league right now - each has conceded 7 goals. (Manchester clubs have each conceded 8, Chelsea has conceded 17).

Final Words

Please don't mess up a chance to go top of the table. A nice and easy win with a clean sheet would be most welcome!

Good Work Sri. Thumbs up

I wish we didn't have so many injuries and maybe rest some players, but every game is a must win game.

So many tired legs, really need some fresh legs, Debuchy and Oxlade must start.

I hope to see a little rotation but not too much. Whichever 2-3 players are closest to the dreaded red zone. I also really hope Ox can take his chance to shine, as he's the most obvious Ramsey replacement barring Theo shifting back to the right ...

Nice preview Thumbs up
Everton are not as good as Rodgers made them to be and not as bad as LVG made them to be. Playing at home with all the momentum Arsenal are clear favorite but agian Wenger does have knack of making things interesting doesn't he.

Think Wenger will go with the same starting team, with the obvious replacement for Ramsey being the Ox.
The team usually doesn't do well when there are 2/3/4 changes made, I don't know why, but the fluency and cohesion just doesn't stay the same in our play.

Everton is a tough team make no mistake, and despite whole history of this fixture being on our side, the more recent history has been more closer imo iirc. The thing with Everton usually depends on them. If they come and play with the pressing, high tempo game we tend to struggle against them, if they don't and we find it easy to move the ball around from midfield to our attackers, we're usually too good for their defence and if we get an early goal we can sometimes easily end up with 3.

Let's hope for a fast start, must win! Remember what I said about the next 3 league games. One step at a time, Come on Arsenal!

We usually need to be patient against this Everton team. They're adept at keeping the ball and are quite solid defensively. It certainly won't be an easy game, since Everton have been in decent form this season and players like Barkley and Lukaku can really hurt us on the counter.

It'll be interesting to see if Giroud gets a start after his two goals off the bench last week. There's the option of moving Theo out wide, too, but I don't think Wenger will go without a striker on the bench.

I don't think rotation is necessary since we have the COC game on Tuesday, so Bellerin, Coquelin, Cazorla, Ozil and Alexis can have a breather then.

It's a big chance for us to go top, if only temporarily. Let's see if that plays on the minds of the players at all.

Agree with team selection. Same team against Bayern will start with Ox replacing Ramsey. First team will have a breather mid week.

Wenger will do well to instruct Coquelin to mark either Lukaku or Naismith

Jay is right about rotation not really needed. However I just hope no player is in the red zone atm since the Bayern match was extremely difficult.

Can possibly see Giroud, Gibbs, Debuchy or Gabriel start

I am not so sure. We've had false dawns before.

We have some players in the red zone - wouldn't be surprised if we end up getting a few more injuries and a scrappy 1-0 loss.

Three changes. Not sure how we'll cope.

Giroud and Ox have points they must be proving.

Ox has not been very impressive.

Also, we have had so many corners. At least we're winning the headers, but need to convert before this slips away.

We are going to have to dig in this second half, we need to be up for the scrap. Delofeu and Lukaku are a hanful, Everton might want to attack a bit more which might open up more space for us so Ox and Sanchez better liven up and show something else in the second half because they have been very average so far.
