Upcoming Stadium projects

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Angelino Alfano announced a “revolutionary” new law to transform stadiums.

Clubs in Serie A and B have complained for many years that the current laws make it very difficult for them to construct their own stadiums, as the vast majority must rent from the local council.

“Tomorrow the Government will present an amendment to the stability law that regards sporting structures,” announced Alfano at a Lega Serie A meeting.

“It will be a revolutionary presentation with three main principles: the first is the possibility to build sporting venues even using private capital, the second regards a cut through the bureaucracy that slows down operations, while the third regards the possibility of opening new structures and commercial activities inside these venues.”

Italian clubs generally do not gain much revenue on match day, as they do not own the stadium and therefore cannot rent out property for bars, restaurants or shops. It also means the stadiums are closed for the rest of the week.

Works could start early next year(2014) and be completed by the start of the 2015-16 season

The expansion would lift capacity to 61,000 seats, making it the 2nd largest Premier League stadium

Economic vice president Javier Faus revealed at the press conference that a budget of €600 million had been allocated to fund the remodeling endeavor, but made clear that this money has to come from the club's own resources.

Of that €600 million, an estimated €420 million will be allocated for the upgrade's individual cost, while a planned Palau—used for complementary services such as restaurants, new parking facilities and entrances—is set to cost approximately €90 million.

The structure of a sports club eventually becomes larger as the social mass increases, the demands of collective grow and competitive requirements are becoming more complex and ambitious. The new stadium is our main project and the culmination of a growing sports club in which we are working and we want to strengthen in the coming years so that the Club can become a reference in the world of football. With the support of the institutions, we want to build a new future for Atletico Madrid and for the city of Madrid, which may have one of the best stadiums in the world.

The main objective for Club Atlético de Madrid, with the development of these projects is to grow in the sponsorship, economic, social and sports areas. In short, a stadium designed by and for the fans, because we have a professional obligation to work for the comfort and welfare of all.


The Club wants to offer fans a multi-functional Stadium to enjoy every day of the week. The Stadium will provide a for concerts, institutional events, business and advertising as well as large international sporting events: the final of the Champions League and Europa League, World Cup, European Championships, Olympic Games, where Atletico Madrid’s stadium will be a benchmark worldwide.

Plans for a huge extension to the Etihad Stadium are set to get the go-ahead.

Manchester City wants to add an extra 6,250 seats at both ends of the ground, as well as a further 2,000 seats around the pitch, taking the Etihad's capacity from 47,620 to 62,170.

That will mean Manchester will have the Premier League's two biggest grounds.

According to Euromericas Sports Marketing, Atletico Madrid had three offers on the table, but Etihad Airways proved to be the most lucrative option for the team’s move to the new stadium ahead of the 2015-16 season, but the deal could be announced sometime in 2014.

According to the report, while the only announcement in regards to the stadium has been the agreement with Centerplate ISG for the balconies and the VIP boxes, the deal with Eithad is in the final stages, however, the issue is with the payments.

Atletico Madrid would like 60% of the €155 million (€93 million) to be paid upfront and the remaining 40% to be paid throughout the 10 years, while the airline wants to pay in yearly installments (€15.5 million annually).

Etihad are likely to agree with Atletico’s proposal, but will require a massive advertising campaign featuring Diego Simeone and the taxes be paid by Atletico for the massive €93 million lump sum.

Symbolic beginning of the old stadium’s demolition was marked on June 2 2013, when chairman Fikret Orman crunched the first chunk of concrete from the north end’s third tier. Within a year almost all of the new stadium’s structure should be in place, while opening is planned for October 2014.

The concept envisages new stands being built within the bowl of historical Inönü. Historical southern façade and western main entrance gate are to be preserved. Inside a colonnade is to encircle new stands, giving support to cable roof with membrane cover.

Seating layout is to include two tiers with corporate seats (144 skyboxes) alongside the pitch. Upper tier is expected to be wavy, lower to the east and taller to the west. This layout will provide a view of the Bosporus for some spectators. Under the new structure a 600-car parking for VIPs is planned.

Due to architectural and traffic restrictions capacity of the new stadium cannot vary significantly from current one, thus only 40,000 seats are expected.

Roma have unveiled plans for a new stadium that they hope to build in time for the 2016-17 season.

It has been revealed that the Stadio della Roma will hold 52,000 fans, with the potential to extend to 60,000, and built on the site of the former Hippodrome in the Tor di Valle area.

President James Palotta admitted it will be a “modern 52,000-seater with state of the art technology” that will “strike fear into our opponents.”

Architect Dan Meis meanwhile insisted that he wanted to recreate one of the city’s most iconic landmarks with the new ground.

“With the Stadio della Roma we want to reproduce the glory and the power of the Colosseum.

“We want to develop a stadium where the fans are close to the playing field, unlike at the Stadio Olimpico

“We've designed a stadium specifically for football that evokes the city's most symbolic monument, the Colosseum.”
