Yaya Sanogo Empty Yaya Sanogo

Post by Alejandro E.Zackarias Fri May 17, 2013 2:36 pm

Initially when I read that we had signed Sagna from the same club as Sanogo,I was quite happy to know to AW has managed to sign another very good player.

But then I realized our last signing from AJA was Diaby,I thought the Arsenal medicos might be in trouble.

And I found I was quite right,at least according to Goal.com:

The 20-year-old striker has struggled with a series of injuries throughout his career and is yet to complete five consecutive matches

Meet Yaya Sanogo, the 20 year old French forward who plays for AJ Auxerre,a club that he has been playing for since 13.

Yaya was born in Massy,Essone to parents of Malian-Ivorian descent.(Making him another player in Arsenal after Gedion Zelalem to have the chance to represent 3 countries Very Happy) .

Yaya Sanogo 2012_2013_27681_500220
He initially joined multi-sports club,CMS Pantin then departed after two years to join Municipal d'Eaubonne, that trained the likes of Hatem Ben-Arfa.Later he joined CO Les Ulis, which produced French football stars like Thierry Henry and Patrice Evra. After spending a year in the Parisian club,he joined AJA on a youth contract.

Sanogo is an impressive physical specimen,he combines good height (6'3") with excellent pace, but his technical ability on the ball is what sets him apart. With his size and imposing strength he also an electric quickness that can terrify defenders. Still to fully develop he is already very athletic, similar to Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke. He attributes his technical skills to the endless five-a-side matches during his time as a child at CO Les Ulis.

Blessed with a good first touch - not just with his feet - he is very capable of holding the ball up with his back to goal much like current Gunner Olivier Giroud. Unlike Giroud, Sanogo can then also use his muscle and explosive speed to burst past his defender and finish confidently.

With all the tools in his arsenal there is no surprise that Sanogo’s name has been constantly linked with a move away from his current club for over two years now. Dropping to Ligue 2 last season would have seen most young talents move on to pastures new, but one hanging doubt stopped the top clubs making a move. Unfortunately Sanogo’s last two years have been dogged with injury.

In 2010 after impressing for French U19 side he suffered a double break of his leg playing for Auxerre reserves, which ended his season. By the start of the 2011 season he had successfully recovered, was playing again for the first team and earned a call up for the French U21 side.

Everything was going well, but just after scoring his first senior goal against Toulouse he suffered another setback, injuries relating to his original leg break would keep him out for another year.

Another spell of rehab saw him make his return at the end of 2012, returning to the first team in Decemeber he scored on his first game back as Auxerre beat Niort 4-2. Then after finding his match fitness he exploded back onto the footballing world, scoring seven goals in just two games. Although Auxerre were faltering in the league, the spotlight had returned to the Stade Abbe Deschamps, and Sanogo was the name on scout’s lips around Europe.

Of course, in true Sanogo fashion this new found form was followed by another injury, this time to his thigh, but again he returned, and scored in Auxerre’s last game against Angers.

The warning signs are clear to see, in three years he only managed seven starts in Ligue 1.

However the positives are also as clear, when fit this season he has scored nine goals in seven starts. From his 11 matches with Auxerre in Ligue 2, he has scored an impressive nine goals. Seven of these came in back-to-back games, in which he struck a treble versus Tours exactly a week after scoring four times in an encounter away at Laval. Such a prolific ability in front of goal is rare for one so young.

As can be seen from the videos,he is calm and accurate in finishing his chances in front of goal. Whether it is beating a defender with his skill or making his way onto the end of a pass, Sanogo can unlock opposing defenses in a variety of ways. He is solid in the air and has excellent agility for his height.

And according to Jamie Sanderson in this article,AW had gone to France in March itself to tie down Sanogo on a pre-contract.L’Equipe,in March had also reported that Arsene Wenger and Gilles Grimandi met with the 20-year-old’s representatives and it’s now believed that a 4-year-deal has been agreed.

Though this deal is still under the wraps,it has been around on various reputed websites.

Yaya Sanogo Article-2325970-199C5F31000005DC-450_634x431

As Sanogo matures and continues to learn how to make runs, and use his strengths inside a system, he can take himself to that next level. As with many young French strikers of Sanogo's caliber, the Thierry Henry comparisons are inevitable. Sanogo is taller than Henry, but the build, pace and skill set he possesses will see him have to deal with the comparisons.

Here's a scouting report from Francis Cagigao(Arsenal Scout) on Yaya in FM:

Here's a year by year development snapshot of Yaya Sanogo(from FM):

great signing.. but that injury record is quite terrifying... Crying or Very sad
i am sure no other big team manager would have signed him..
Wenger and his never ending patience and belief in his players.. Proud
for this summer, lets concentrate on getting Joel Campbell and Ryo to play some games next season..

Excellent report Alejandro.

He genuinely looks like a good player. Technique, finishing, first touch. Lets hope he gets over his fitness issues

French, Injured, Young and no other team is interested, typical Wenger signing. I just hope is not a 10 years contract worth 100k a week.

Diaby got competition. Laughing

Thanks RG Thumbs up

He is a certified good player with goals galore in various under age matches,in Ligue 2 and Ligue 1 and we've signed this guy for free and have him on less wages tied to a 4-year contract.

We can reap rich rewards if he becomes as good as the players he has been compared with.

Even if he gets frequently injured, there isn't much to worry since he hasn't been signed for the first team unlike our previous free signing,Chamakh but is only a fringe first team/reserve team player. If the Arsenal medical team was able to treat Judas and Diaby all year around, they can definitely treat Yaya.

The only gripe about this signing is that it MIGHT restrict Chuba's growth.

This is just scary, if you are like this at age 20, what happens in few years?

Shows great promise that makes us never think of selling him...

4 years goes away

Then he is injured for a season and is world class for another

4 years pass

He is the best player in the world

1 year passes

He listens to the little girl in him and signs for Man Utd.

Assuming he's being signed more as "one for the future," with appropriate wages, possibly loan plans, etc., I don't see any serious negatives to this deal. Yeah maybe he won't amount to much - injuries are a concern. But on the optimistic side: he's physically big yet seems to have good technique and be pretty well-rounded ... so maybe he could emulate Adebayor back when Adebayor was actually a very good striker (circa 2008). And he's free. Worth a try!

Plus, as has been amply noted, he boasts a solid gamer reputation. He performed superbly in a Newcastle FM2011 save I once had. Cool

I trust Wenger's unknown signings.. Remember when we had Niang on trial and then he signed for AC Milan? and now he's shows a lot of promise.. and he did scout Koscielny and sign him and we were skeptical of his signing and now Koscielny is one of the best CBs in the world atm.

I think 300,000 is worth the investment honestly sure he could keep getting injuries but he looks like someone who could thrive in the EPL with his physique.

He's young and French. And Wenger said he is feeling confident that the deal will go through. So yeah,

That's less than what Djourou, Denilson, Bendtner, Chamakh, Park and Squillaci are making by at least 15k.

Exactly. For such a supposedly tidy club, financially, I'm glad we're finally going to be cleaning up some of the mess.
