CL First Leg: Madrid v. Roma

Post by sportsczy on Mon Feb 15, 2016 1:09 am

CL is the only trophy where our destiny is in our own hands... so we have to make it count.  Just a few notes about Roma.

Under Garcia, they played  a very predictable game.  Offense was pretty good and defense was pretty good.  They just didn't have a plan B so they could be schemed against pretty easily.  Under Spalletti, I don't think anything has changed.  They're even more focused on offense and the defense is still suspect while still trying to play possession football.  He has more strategic variety however imo.

The dangerous players are Salah, Dzeko and Pjanic.  On defense, Manolas is decent and Rudiger/Digne are talents.  But they're not ready for this level yet on defense.

THAT SAID, this is a challenge for our midfield.  Serie A teams can really play in the middle and they play tough.  So Modric, Kroos and Isco cannot be cute or soft.  They need to fight for the ball and play cleanly.  If our strikers get a good number of chances, we will score a few.

Hala Madrid.

We have many, many, many weakness ourselves, so we shouldn't feel that confident. That space between our strikers and midfielders is killing me. I don't think Roma is inferior to Betis or Granada and we've so far struggled in away games under Z, so expect us to suffer over there. Not to mention that, without Marcelo, we will lose more than half of our attacking threat - and Bale's absence will result in us not having anybody linking our midfielders to our lazy strikers.

Would settle for a draw.

Hope all is ok Adit.

Let's make sure we understand who struggled in our away games: Kroos/James/Isco/Danilo in the first one and Kroos/Kova/Varane in the second one.

There's only one common player there: Kroos.

Buying my defibrillator as we speak

Zidane better put Carvajal at RB. Cant have the same situation as vs Bilbao where both RBs get roasted on either side

Oh and as i started my evening dose of Madrid news i have just read that Marcelo trained with the team and was picked in the squad to travel to Rome. Man i thought he would miss more games. Fabulous professionalism

I just became more confident of our chances now.

Ronaldo has been the same. Poor performance from all 3 of of them. They make it impossible to make passes into them so we just roll the ball around until we lose it and get hit on the counter

Flip side defense has been really good. Despite the lazy forwards.

That's how to play a Serie A side... other than Benz looking like an old man and Marcelo getting used by Salah like a 10 cent hooker.

Great job by the CBs. Ramos and Varane were absolutely marvelous... Ramos got caught a couple of times. But it's hard when you have to defend without a fullback.
