The Conte Era - Chelsea 17/18 - Page 2 Empty Re: The Conte Era - Chelsea 17/18

Interesting thoughts Kick, enjoyed reading that!

Q. Azpi, LB or RB?
It's sad to see how different he is compared to the previous season. Sometimes I feel that he is not solely to blame. Terry's lack of pace has got us so much caught up in the counter that we've been leaking in goals like crazy.

I don't think we'd see a new right back unless Baba goes.

Q. Keep JT, buy a new CB or promote youth?
I think it's time to call it quits on him. His leadership skills are really important but still, he's not cut out for our play anymore. We need to bring in someone like Hummels.

Q. Should Terry leave, Ivanovic or Fabregas for Captain?
I've grown to like Fabregas as a captain myself. I agree, given the performances on the pitch so far, I'm more inclined to see him get it over Brana.

Q. 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1?
As cool as it is, a three man backline in the EPL feels too risky. Personally, I'm too tired of seeing the 4-2-3-1. I'd go for the 4-3-3 and see more pace in our play

Q. How do we fix the midfield?
I think Conte might surprise us with the effect he has on players. Oscar keeps on giving the vibe that he's peaked. I feel that we need a world class signing that can rejuvenate our midfield

Q. What do we do with Courtois, Matic, Baba and Oscar?
Courtois: I'd keep him around. Everyone has been having a bad season but he's made some really good saves throughout. I'm more concerned about Begovic. Despite how many games he's got as a backup reports suggest that he's not happy. I still believe that our backline is making our goalkeepers look worse than they really are.

I agree with the rest of your analysis.

Q. Pedro or Cuadrado?
Agreed. Pedro has been improving recently and his workrate and dedication is something we could really do with. Cuadrado just screams Salah.

Q. What do we do with the kids?
I think that as long as we have strong first team members, they can integrate well with the team. As long as there is a balance, there's no reason why we can't do it.

Q. What are our goals for next season?
Treble. Nuff said Wink

Guaranteed you will play a 352. That's all he's ever coached and he's a big advocate. You need 3 CBs. Cahill-Terry-Zouma seems fine to me.

He introduced 3-5-2 to Juventus because it was the ideal formation for the players we have had. His original plan was to play 4-2-4 but we did not have the players to support that formation, so he adapted. I expect him to do the same at Chelsea. Conte will find a formation ideal for Chelsea's player and use it, it's not that complicated.

I would agree with you.... except he stuck with a 352 even when you had significant injuries to 1-2 of your CBs. Given the extra depth at CM (you had Marchisio on the bench), you would have thought Conte would have shifted to a 442. But he didn't. He played Ogbonna and even Caceres at CB over adding a mid.

That's when i felt he was really committed to the 352.

Sure but how could he play 4-4-2 with no wingers at his disposal and with defence being the most stacked line of the team ? Playing 4-3-3 against Madrid with Ogbonna as a left-back and Marchisio as a winger didn't work that well. Laughing

All I want to say is that the truth is somewhere in the middle. Yes he did stuck with 3-5-2 but not because he is obsessed with it or it is the only formation he knows, but because that formation brought in the results and made us play better. Also our players felt more secure with it. Hell they feel more secure with it even now, 2 seasons later.

With the roster Conte had at his disposal, 3-5-2 was the safest bet and the most functional solution. I am sure you know that he did ask for quality wingers to be signed (Sanchez and Cuadrado) so he could shift away from 3-5-2 and the main reason he left from Juventus was that the management wouldn't meet his requirements.

I simply cannot see him play 3-5-2 at Chelsea. It's not logical, it's not practical, it's not functional. They don't have the roster for it and to create the roster for 3-5-2, they should first sell their wingers and buy 3-4 new CB's. It sounds irrational even on paper. A team with so many top class wingers yet problematic CB's playing 3-5-2 ? He had Barzagli Bonucci and Chiellini with us, he has Hazard, Willian, Cuadrado and Pedro at Chelsea, see the difference mate ?

I feel Conte stuck with 3-5-2 at Juve because that's what they knew, and thats what worked.

And as Andrew said, he left Juve because they were not buying the players he wanted, namely, wingers.

I am torn between a 4-4-2 and a 4-3-3 for him, both of which he seems to prefer. We'd have to kee Terry and still sign a CB to have depth for a 3 man defence, and then sell some of our wingers.

It's just not feasible.

@Soul , thanks for the input mate! I think the fullback situation depends on the fates of Ake, Baba and Bran. If Bran is deemed not good enough, a RB is certainly needed, as Dave can play LB. But it is something that needs to be adressed early in Conte's tenure.

Courtois came out today and said he is 100% committed to Chelsea, while I have read that Begovic is excited to work with Conte, so I think both will stay Smile

"Conte only plays 3-5-2" is myth by people who didn't watch him. He was known for his "4-2-4" and was signed with the idea of playing that. Then Vidal (who had just been signed with Pirlo) impressed and we swtiched to a 4-3-3 after a couple of rounds. Only late in the season in 2012 he started using the 3-5-2 cause our wingers sucked (Krasic and Pepe) and Bonucci gave the team options in the build up. It was common that he would switch formations during the game. Most of that unbeaten scudetto was 4-3-3.

Like Andrew says, he even played a back four in his last season (2013/14) at the Bernabeu in CL but we just didn't have a left back so Ogbonna filled in. After Grosso retired, De Ceglie was the only LB Juve had until Evra joined last season. We had 4 great CMs (Pirlo, Marchisio, Vidal, Pogba) and 4 great CBs (Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Caceres), 1 LB and 1 winger. The 3-5-2 was the perfect solution to play our strengths and he went with it.

For Italy as well, he has played 3-5-2, 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and now 3-4-3. No doubt that at Chelsea he will experiment until he finds his solution for his squad.

An easy start for Conte, imo. As long as we beat West Ham on opening day.

No team is a walkover, now less than ever, but for a side aiming to be contending for top spot in the Premier League, that's a very generous start indeed.
