This season no la liga teams were knocked out by a foreign team either.

What are they doing different? The talent level is similar to all other leagues yet la liga teams looks tactically on another level in Europe.

So what it is that makes the Spanish clubs competitive despite being in terrible state financially?

I honestly believe the cultural Spanish game kind of gets the best out of technical players and it shows in Europe. There is no less talent in EPL , actually they have better players yet I think la liga clubs usually has the ability to get the best out of players.

I don't accept that EPL has as much talent as la liga, in terms of technical competance. If you asked for a list of the top top players (an unbiased viewpoint), you will find that the top 10 are in Spain, Germany, Italy and France. The other question re talent comparison is depth of that talent. I believe you will find (again if done in an unbiased manner) that there is a talent edge in Spain. However the EPL supporters are forever overestimating their teams and talent and severely underestimating others esp. Spain, so they no doubt will not agree. In which case we can only point out that the results in European competitions is the deciding factor. Just go back and look at the bold predictions they were saying (and were off). Of course there is those like Courtinho, ( like Harmonica with Barca), that say the games are rigged!!!

The only thing in their favour, at this point is the money they have available and that now they have managed to recruit some top coaches. But so far, that money hasn't really produced any meaningful results.

If it's a direct comparison with the EPL, it's simple, Spanish teams put together teams, they don't just buy players to buy them.

The EPL has a horrible track record when it comes to buying players and putting teams together. There GM's are god awful.

The amount of money they waste is astonishing and they never learn from there mistakes they just rinse, wash and repeat over and over again.

Not to mention if EPL teams don't start to value possession and keep the ball instead of running around chasing the ball for 90 minutes they will never compete in Europe again. The style of play in the EPL is so far away from what works in Europe it's crazy.
