He has not character (he's always been this, and never improved ) and infact he is often underachiever (even in Europe) in big games.
Interestingly, the IFFHS voted him the 2nd best referee in the world in 2013, the best referee in the world in 2014 and the best referee in the world in 2015.

Well, Robes character is not always a good thing. Howard Webb was a huge character on the pitch. That *bleep* thought that fans came to watch him instead of the match. Would always make it about himself. And was the most overrated referee of all time. The absolute embarrassment he put himself in WC 2010 final finally opened the eyes of the English media who were shoving the drivel down our throats that he was the best ref

Personally Clattenburg was brilliant in the Spurs Chelsea game unlike some of the opinions here, No referee could have controlled what went down in the second half of the match. He could have sent 3-4 players off in the match comfortably.

So maybe if he had sent off the first 1, the other 2-3 would have reconsidered.

He's the opposite than Webb though.Don't call me James wrote:breva wrote:Robespierre wrote:Rizzoli is a referee very overrated (one of most overrated refs ever imo ) .

About the character, I mean he is a chickensh*t, a timorous .. always been this since he didn't give the red card to Totti in 2008 despite Totti said him f**k you many times in face
And if you didn't command respect , you can't referee. Beyond this, he makes often mistakes in big games, even Barcelona knows this . I r eally don't get why he's hyped, I always wonder it whenever he gets a big match.

Well, you must know way more than the referees and directors that voted him the best in the world for the past two years.

Re: Mark Clattenburg - the best referee in the world
You serious ??
He was atrocious consistently. First half he was favoring United all the way. At the halftime I think he must have thought he had made a mistake with his poor decisions and need to balance it out and came out and was giving everything in favor of Palace. Martial and Rashfod were literally getting thrown around by their thuggish defenders and he didnt give a single one of them.
Dont mind the moron commentators defending him everytime and was hyping him up with Webb's assistance. The guy was a joke today.
May be he is better than all the other dross in the country but that doesnt mean he is good. He is like one eyed among all the blind.
Lol La liga fans are gonna in for a treat a week later.

Re: Mark Clattenburg - the best referee in the world
Not going to take the comments of a non neutral seriously to be honest. Absolutely impossible to be unbiased.
As a neutral, his biggest mistake was not playing advantage on a clear foul where Wickham did fall over (usually, players tend not to get back up, so even that is somewhat excusable). If your biggest mistake was not calling advantage, you've done well. Palace can't even complain, they got a yellow on Smalling which turned into a red and a dangerous free kick out of it.

Fair enough.
Will say only one thing. He may be a good referee in the league and all. But in a big match, in a pressure situation he comes across as bit of a spineless one, thats all.
Commentators were constantly defending him saying that. May be its right.

Re: Mark Clattenburg - the best referee in the world
Overall I haven't had that issue with him, but he was spineless in the Tottenham Chelsea game, so that may be a fair point.
We'll see how he treats Atletico-Madrid, he shouldn't have any problem handing out cards to those two.

Clattenberg spent more time chatting to the players than actually refereeing

Should've sent off Ramos tbh, but aside from that a solid game.

Liked how firm he was with players who tried to approach him and how he did not fall for any dives and playacting particularly from Pepe. Got the descision on Ramow spot on. Cant be faulted for our goal

Incredible career, he may not have the longevity of Giggs, but his 12 seasons at United was nothing short of amazing. Legend.
