Controversial opinion, but I'd rather have prime Xavi than present time Messi on my team. That guy could help a toddler score in a CL game. None of you were praising Messi on the many occasions where the team was playing fantastic football in his absence, but now that they are underperforming, he's suddenly that missing piece of magic. I suppose Messi has adapted into a Xavi- type for Barca these days, but in terms of playmaking, I don't believe anyone is on the level of prime Mr. DNA.

Re: Barcelona Are Ordinary!
Ordinary is not the right word. At the moment, the closest comparison I have for this Barcelona is Arsenal with less control.
There is no ppsoiton play applied and the team essentially relies on the creativity of its forwards to create chances. The automatisms from Peps Barcelona are all but gone and only the build up has decent positioning but after that the midfield is set up in a way that Barcelona can't consistently take advantages of free men. The team has become a transition team that tries to get the ball to forwards quickly and when you do that, you have less control. When they lose the ball in such a chaotic attack the players aren't in the optimal position to counterproductive meaning the first press is easier to bypass, meaning that your defenders are facing one vs ones a lot more in a high line so are more prone to mistakes or generally even when deep, they will struggle eventually and make mistakes.
When Messi isn't there noone seems to be making runs at the moment bar Suarez. Arda and Neymar want ball to feet so the team is having to face deep blocks and noone is running to create space.

Re: Barcelona Are Ordinary!
Last season such a thread was nowhere to be seen yet we lost 4-1 to Celta at Balaidos. WITH MESSI. And we played way worse than last night.
4-3 yesterday is a massive improvement taking into account that if not for TerStegen's blunder we could have came back from this. WITHOUT MESSI.
Come on now.

Also this. Incredible how whiny people are. Pre-mature judgements are so common these days.

Re: Barcelona Are Ordinary!
There are so many new players and it takes time to gel, but clearly there has been some decisions wrong by the manager.
The main one is letting Bravo go and trusting Stegen, it clearly has proven time and again Bravo > Stegen, and not tell me the age factor, it does not really matter for a GK, selling Bravo was a mistake
Players aging and leaving and then signing players to replace them it clearly hasnt been perfect, but I guess u cannot expect it, every player is different and u just cant find a replacement to players like Iniesta or Alves, u just cant. Roberto has done well during the previous few games but this game he showed again he just cannot compare with Alves... new players like Paco havent seen anything thats justified us getting him.... I guess we have to accept these and hope the players improve and gel better as the season progresses....
Enrique getting it wrong and failing to counter Celta again after season is the other worrying thing, it shows lack of improvement and ability to react quick and effectively.
Rotation is a theme and something Enrique wants to do this season but its proving to be so risky and costly so far. Lets hope Umtiti comes back and proves he can be our rock at the back like we hope, and Messi back and firing for us soon...
Overall its lucky Real are slipping as well, but now Atletico are top and it would be funyn if they manage to win the league again, but they are really impressive atm so Barca really need to eliminate the errors and these kind of performances again....

We miss Xavi more then ever. Messi is the best player in the world, but he is no 2011 machine anymore. Probably the best playmaker in the world atm rather then attacker/10/poacher whatever. he really makes it click.

Re: Barcelona Are Ordinary!
Xavi delivered on Henry like crazy, he would love this fast pacey midfield passing to the front 3. He would really make this team better, even today. He is balling in Qatar like a boss, still can do it. Lets take him back.

Re: Barcelona Are Ordinary!
hight of stupidity when people say Barca are all about Messi
there are so many cases which prove this notion wrong: there were times when Messi played and Barca still lost games. There were also times when Messi was not there and Barca still won many games. So what it says, Barca are completely different when Messi is there but you cant tell me it is Messilona

Re: Barcelona Are Ordinary!
This just shows the bunch of creatures we have here on GL. So last season this thread was no where to be found but suddenly this season, everyone is crap, neymar and suarez are nothing without messi, barca is ordinary and suddenly messi is the piece of magic that barca so desperately need. *smh* what's worse, this thread was actually created by a supposed barca/messi fan.

Re: Barcelona Are Ordinary!
You ask yourself why renowned guys like franchise don't post here anymore.
Btw, all this is because of a single match barca lost to celta (4-3) that barca actually lost in celta WITH messi on the field last season (4-1)? My God, what am I doing here on GL?

No we are not yet. Don't let the scoreline vs City fool you, it was mostly due to cumulation of bad managerial decisions, individual mistakes and as usual a yet another terrific performance from our gifted forwards especially the man himself.

Yeah, Barcelona weren't amazing at all yesterday. A bit lucky to get their first goal and then a massive howler from Bravo set the stage up for an easy peasy finish.

Re: Barcelona Are Ordinary!
Barca would struggle big time if one of the big 3 misses a whole season due to injury. They are so reliant on the 3 of them to basically do everything on offense.
There's absolutely no other offensive gameplan other than give the ball to the big 3. It's a good plan when you've got these 3 playing of course. But when they are out the team will struggle.

When Messi turns on the style they are a completely different team. Never seen a team more dependent on one player. He makes the other 21 one players including his partners in attack look like pub players

What an idiotic post. As if any big team wouldn't struggle if one of their best players was missing?
Not to mention Messi was missing for 2 months last season and Barca was amazing.

Bla...bla...bla...
You lot lost 4-0 to a Messi-less Barcelona with Sergi Roberto playing a main role.
I would even dare to say that these ~2 months without Messi last season was the best football Barca played that season.
And yeah, he makes Suarez and Neymar look like pub players..... You did not even watch the game, I can bet my left nut...
