Everything he says comes off as the dumb guy in class who has to present something, but he hasn't been studying and by this point just winging it.

Makes me wonder if at some point in the distant future people will be looking back at us and wondering how the hell blatant liars and idiots (In some ways) consistently get to the top positions in politics and are allowed to get away with blatant lies. Kind of how we look back now at points in history and wonder how the hell some things were allowed to happen. I don't limit this to trump exclusively though, but he chats so much shit in a world where it's easy to look anything up. I can talk believable BS very convincingly, might take up politics.

In a word? Fear.

People in this country are afraid:

- They see what's happening in Europe and fear it will happen to them. Trump and his ilk have fed that fear.

- They see jobs in forgotten industries like coal drying up and impoverishing communities that once depended on it and they fear they'll never be able to prosper again. Trump and his ilk have fed that fear.

- They see these reports of illegal immigrants killing people (in very small numbers compared to murders by legal citizens) and they fear it will happen to them. Trump and his ilk have fed that fear.

- They see the rise of a new generation, culture and ways of thinking and it scares them that this will radically change society (who am I kidding? It already has for the most part). Trump and his ilk fed into that fear.

- They see terrorist attacks from radicalized legal citizens and they fear that this will become the norm so they want anyone who even remotely fits the guise of a Muslim to be banned from this country. Trump and ilk fed that fear.

- They see people of color tired of getting killed in the streets because they were guilty of being a color the cops found suspicious and they fear these people of color becoming more and more of a force. Trump and his ilk fed that fear.

I could go on and on. Every reason someone voted for Trump, you'll probably find some measure of fear or desperation behind it.

I am a student of history and it saddens me to see it repeating itself yet again.

The preamble to the question regarding buzzfeed's scurrilous report explicitly referenced the focus of the question to trump surrogates communicating with Russia. Sessions's response was qualified by noting himself having been called a surrogate and it is to that capacity that his statement referred.

Perjury is a 'wilful untruth', not a game of gotcha taking people's words out of context.

Meeting with Russians isn't the problem. Meeting with foreign ambassadors in general isn't the problem. Lying about meeting with Russians to disconnect yourself from the accusations about their involvement in our election is the problem. Trump did it. Flynn did it. Spicer and his deputy did it too. Now Sessions. And for what?
