The Movie House - Part 9
I am sure most if not all of you have probably seen this so you know what I mean when I say this was an absolute masterpiece.
Might be the best acting I have seen in any film. Also the directing. For a 50s film, it felt revolutionary for some reason. Really artistic.
But the acting. 12 different characters and they all perfectly excelled at it. Felt so realistic. The story was amazing too. Kept you debating whether the kid might be guilty or not. And how events developed over time.
9.4/10

Re: The Movie House - Part 9
Lumet really had a knack for engaging the viewer with actors and dialogue in few to a single location.
Seen Dog Day Afternoon?

It's a single location robbery drama with two of the GOAT actors

It's great but not similar.
I'd also watch Rear Window if I were you. The greatest Hitchcock film imo.

Re: The Movie House - Part 9
I'm watching my first black and white movie as well.
Will start with 12 Angry Men. I've been planning on watching it for over a decade.

WOW. So good. You guys don't realize how rarely I give movies over 9.0/10. It has to be instantly one of my favorites of all time. And this is. Absolutely glued to the screen for the whole film. And it flew by so fast. The movie just has the perfect grasp of the human character and human nature. I'm a sucker for single location movies, and this for me is the GOAT single location movie.
My first taste of black and white. Didn't bother me at all. In fact I didn't even feel any big difference with the way I was glued to the screen with this one.

5/5
Up there as one of the best foreign films of all time for me. It is probably 50 - 60 % in English though due to lead not being adept in German.

Re: The Movie House - Part 9
Very good thriller. Great suspense. Very well acted and directed and cinematography is awesome. Well ahead of its time I should say given it was 1954. But the plot was overly simple once I settled into the film. I kept expecting something grand but it never came. The ending was fun but again a bit underwhelming. I think the movie is slightly overrated given how highly people rate it but it's very good and worth a watch.
Also probably shouldn't have watched it right after 12 Angry Men which is on another level in quality.

Re: The Movie House - Part 9
First give me your top 10 favorite films before 1980.
Here's my current top 10 but this is literally all the films I've seen pre-80s so they all make the list

1. The Godfather Part I
2. The Godfather Part II
3. 12 Angry Men
4. Alien
5. Rear Window
6. Dog Day Afternoon
7. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
8. Rocky
9. Jaws
10. Taxi Driver
Second, also give me your top 10 during 1980s because that decade is so packed I need a separate list.
Here's some that I've seen in no order from 1980s. Also not including Star Wars.
Dead Poets Society
Raiders of the Lost Arc
Die Hard
Airplane!
Amadeus
The Thing
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Blade Runner
Police Academy

Watch Rope mate if you havent. One Hitchcock movie that always gives me chills for its sheer brilliance of the plot.
Anyway, my black and white/classics favorites apart from Taxi Driver include
Down By Law
Night on Earth
Mystery Train
Stranger than Paradise
( I am a huge Jim Jarmush fan btw, so I like all the above films, check out Night on Earth and Down By Law guys, they are frigging awesome, even people who wont enjoy indie flicks normally will like them imo)
Strozsek (Werner Herzog!

Rashomon
Clockwork Orange
The Shining
2001 A space Odyssey
The King Of Comedy (Possibly the best Scorsese film out there after TD)
After Hours
