You can Tell 'Em I Said it

Post by The Demon of Carthage on Sat Jul 22, 2017 6:43 am

This is a thread about players you think would make brilliant managers. You're going to give your own prediction, and this thread is going to be your proof to come back to when your prediction becomes a reality.

Just a couple rules to remember before we begin:

1) Do not name former players who have already started coaching or tried coaching and then went on to something else (Zidane, Pep, Inzaghi, Neville...).

2) Do not name players or former players that have declared publicly they won't become coaches (Ronaldinho, Cristiano...).

Let me be the first to roll the dice; here's the list of the players I think would be great coaches if they chose to become one:

Spain:

  • Xabi Alonso
  • Andres Iniesta

Germany

  • Toni Kroos

France

  • Hugo Lloris

Italy

  • Gianluigi Buffon

United Kingdom

  • Aaron Ramsey

Definitely Chiellini, in the Juve environment, if he doesn't become one of our directors then he'll be a great manager.

Rinocn ---> No doubt about that, i can see Giorgio remain at the club after his playing career.

Maybe you saw that: he recently graduated from the University of Turin, now he owns a master's degree in Business Administration. The thesis he submitted was about Juve Very Happy

Kroos does not have enough inter-personal skills or personality to become a good coach.
Alonso on the other hand..

I know this doesn't mean anything because we've had many successful defenders-turned-managers over the years, but take a look at this:

2017. CL winner: Zidane. Position: midfielder.
2016. CL winner: Zidane. Position: midfielder.
2015. CL winner: Enrique. Position: midfielder.
2014. CL winner: Carlo. Position: midfielder.
2013. CL winner: Jupp. Position: forward.
2012. CL winner: Roberto. Position: Midfielder.
2011. CL winner: Pep. Position: midfielder.
2010. CL winner: Jose. Position: midfielder.
2009. CL winner: Pep. Position: midfielder.
2008. CL winner: Alex. Position: forward.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
1996. CL winner: Lippi. Position: defender.

You'd have to go back to 1996 to find a CL winning manager who used to be a defender (Lippi).

And ever since then, the list has been dominated by midfielders.

In a way, it makes sense because midfielders are the brain of the team, but I have always thought that it takes a lot of intelligence to be a defender as well. Before I knew Ramos that is Laughing

the most common factor in that list you put up is that all those cl winners had great teams (chelsea's 2011 team as probably the exception). i don't even know how mourinho fits in this list, he had a failed career as a player. he's more of a coach than a player. similar with ferguson too, more coach than player. nothing about the position. some of these guys (pep, enrique, zidane) had good teams, and based on their times/popularity as players got the gigs

i know the midfield is the brain child and all, and that's fine, but i don't know what midfield experience mourinho could have brought to the table....most things he brought to the table as a coach i believe are from his experiences as a coach. oh and i don't know if enrique can be solely classified as a midfielder, he played multiple offensive position throughout his career

back to the main point of the post, not to be a kill joy, lol. but its going to end up being everybody's best midfielder been listed on here. and it won't be wrong cos if that midfielder can end up on a team that has all the talent in a playing field that isn't anywhere close to being an even playing field they too can win. ottmar hitzfeld, rafa benitez where not midfielders neither and their teams won ucl in the 2000s
