Could the sport decline in popularity in the future?

Post by Interman on Mon Sep 25, 2017 3:08 pm

In the last 20-30 years futbal has become the most popular sport in the world. the one with the most money in it.

What could possibly kill the sport or make it less appealing in the future?

For me it's the fact that the game is becoming more and more tactical, this makes it less interesting to watch. we have seen teams parking the bus for 90 minutes. less goals being scored, less talented players, less freedom for individual players to develope and shine, like Ronaldinho, Pele, Maradona, Zidane, etc. no such caliber of players are being developed these days. part of it is because of how much tactical and athletical the game has become. Tactical and atheltism shift killed the factory of artistic players.

Agreed in all with the last paragraph. You can also add the existence of greedy agents ala Raiola AND the lack of players with charisma in the list of reasons.

Will it become less popular ? i don't think so, there is too much marketing around the game
Is it less appealing than it was before ? in my opinion, yes

Can't agree with "no such caliber players" when we have the actual GOAT currently playing. The Portuguese GOAT. One of the (most likely) future Brazilian GOAT. Maybe the best French generation in a long time. A new top Italian generation after a big gap. The best Spanish generation ever continuing and renewing itself. Etc.

Its not like "Ronaldinho, Pele, Maradona" actually were of the same generation.

Football changes, its how its always been. Its getting bigger and bigger.

Of course it will decline at some point (not in the near future though). You wouldn't expect anything to stay on top forever.
