Messi was the best player in the world when it came to domestic league performances. He lead every statistical category and Barca didn't lose a single game he was involved in. He practically lead them to a double when most thought they'd have a bad year due to the sale of Neymar.

If any other player had those circumstances they'd be a potential favourite, while Leo doesn't even make it to the top 3 lmao. He's become a victim of his own success.

That and people judged he had an underwhelming WC, which ultimately is what matters most in a WC year

MEssi doesnt deserve to be on the list ahead of the 3 players mentioned. They set themselves apart in european competitions unlike Messi, and in the world cup  (except for CR who has still fantastic in CL). Roasting Huesca on a weekly basis is not sufficient to be the best on a given year

Salah is there as a minority representative to fill the diversity quota, couldn't have another year of Spanish inquisition.

Messi probably played better than all of them. CR was shit entire season and nominated for the bycicle kick. Modric was good but not great in the liga. But i understand he had great world cup. Salah cant be better than Messi no matter what he does. its ridiculous. Only Modric deserves to be there alongside with Messi who had 3 cups under his belt and golden shoe winner

That being said, what stands out is Barcelona blowing a 3 goal lead to Roma in the 2nd leg where the great man did nothing and his underwhelming World Cup and that's why he won't be a front runner for these individual awards, sadly. Any performance in Spain is unfairly put aside for those two events in what was a very good season for Messi.

Griezmann over Salah? No. As someone who watched Griezmann last season as a fan of his, he only really started to play better when Costa came back in January. Salah was performing consistently all season including in the CL. Sure, Liverpool didn't win anything but they made it so far in either competition (PL and CL) because of Salah's effort.

It's not actually, because the whole team focuses on feeding the forwards and he enjoys hiding behind Costa to get his stats. When Costa was not around and he had to lead the line, he was shit, got kicked out of the CL lol.

As soon as Costa shows up, he enjoys a lot more freedom and the rest actually do that dirty work.

i gave two ways to look at it, because as Windkick said, Griezmann won a lot of trophies this year. But if you look at performances, you could come up with a different outcome. I really expected Griezmann to be nominated, no french representation in the year they win the world cup is a bit shocking. But then i gave a reasoning as to why it is not so crazy.

The main reason Liverpool got to the CL final was an easy draw against Roma (yeah, make all the jokes you want, Roma still are a mediocre team, even if we bottled it against them in 1 game) and Klopp's tactics against Pep.

Other than that Liverpool won nada and finished below Spurs.

Madrid collectively sucked all season in the league, Ronaldo turned it on against PSG and Juventus away. Then opposition gifts carried Madrid to glory in both semis and the final. At no point was there Modric magic. Then Croatia surprisingly reached the WC final in a low quality World Cup, one penalty shootout after another (with Modric cracking under pressure, see his penalties) and in hindsight Madrid's CL victories + Croatia reaching the final = Modric Ballon d'Or.

It's the new version of the FIFA POTY. Basically a popularity contest by coaches and NT captains. If we are being honest here, even if the top 80 countries know what they're on about, the bottom 100 countries or so are not really equipped to answer this question any more than a 3rd division coach, and they get the bulk of the votes.
