UEFA confirm "Europa League 2"

A third European competition with the working title 'Europa League 2' will be introduced from 2021, Uefa has confirmed.
The seventh-placed team from the Premier League will enter the play-offs of the new tournament.
As part of Uefa's 2021-2024 cycle, the Europa League will be halved in size to 32 teams with an extra play-off round between the group stage and last 16.
The new tournament will be played on Thursdays alongside the Europa League.
Every country's champions will still enter the Champions League, but the other teams from smaller countries will go straight into 'UEL2' qualifying instead of the Europa League's early rounds.
The new competition and Europa League will have the same format - eight groups of four teams with the winners going into the last 16. There will be a play-off before that round for the teams who finish second in the group and sides who finish third in the groups of the higher tournament.
The winners of the tournament will qualify for the following season's Europa League.
The Champions League format does not change.
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said: "The new competition makes Uefa's club competitions more inclusive than ever before. There will be more matches for more clubs, with more associations represented in the group stages.
"This competition was born out of ongoing dialogue with clubs through the European Club Association."
At least 34 countries will have teams in a group stage, compared to 26 at the moment.

Terrible idea. Basically a participation medal and a total cash-in for the organization.
Reminds me of when the fat or non-athletically talented kid is picked for the sports team out of sympathy instead of merit; to which is a terrible concept as it is.

Here's a big problem with it... mid table teams DO NOT have the squad depth to play 2 games a week. Just don't. So what's going to happen is that they're going to put a bunch of b team players in for this one.
You already can't get teams to line up their top team for Europa. What makes you think they're going to do it for Europa B?
No way in hell they're going to jeopardize league points for a crappy cup.

Ridiculous and may just say a lot on why US football is so dire and overplayed by certain individuals from their media or fans.
Great point on how mid table clubs will never waste their resources for this. Can only see countries below Top 7 coefficients fighting for this.

It's mainly a competition for clubs from smaller European leagues who are happy to have any kind of European games + it's a nice change for their fans to get some European games, too. If the big-5 leagues want to play their b or youth teams I don't think that's a problem. We're not talking about a top class competition here.

Tbh, I think this system is fine for the younger age group of kids, say like 3-7. Past that it shouldn't be a thing.

It could be a good idea tbh
at least you streamline Europa League a bit, too many clubs, jumble of bad matches, if 2nd phases begins from Round of 16 and not Round of 32 is different and it is better .
Moreover you give dignity to the various East Europe teams /North European teams that aren't going out prematurely anymore but they can play for a title finally.

A Europa League of a closer level between the teams and then EL2 for smaller to shoot for a win.

So like the Cup Winners' Cup of ancient times? Or is the Europa League the Cup Winners' Cup and this new one would be like the UEFA Cup. Doesn't matter, better idea than FIFA's World Cup every two years shit.

There were three annual European competitions for many years. Champions Cup, Cup Winners Cup and Fairs (then Uefa) Cup.
