I really like this Transfer Price Index (about football inflation)

Give it a read if you haven't already

Well , I'd like to say two words about Everton.

We aren't talking about newcomers, they're a historical club , they were even the 2nd English club for leagues won till to 80s ( behind to Liverpool), if I remember correctly  they are also  the team to have played the most leagues in first divison (relegated just 4 times)....... .. Yet they haven't won a trophy since 1995.
Not even a League Cup. Not even won a derby away since 1999 (and honestly for some periods there wasn' t this gap between 2 Liverpool clubs). Basically if you are old 25 you can't remember a victory at Anfield, if you are of my age you can remember it hardly.
Yes, it's the age of " big money" and Everton is inferior to others on this , but history tells us that clubs as ne, Swansea, Blackburn, Middlesbrough, even Wigan, Birmingham and Portsmouth, obviously Leicester have won it ( ok I say Newcastle and West Ham United for Intertoto Cup ) ... and Everton..... nothing.
Even their presences in Europe are became rare , they don't relegate  or they don't risk  (except for 1998 ), but  total anonymity.
Yet the chances for winning are more  in England   than elsewhere , for a club that have always had good players.
I remember they were capable even to bottle FA Cup semi-final at Goodison Park, losing against Wigan for 0-3 with 3 goals in 3 minutes.
I feel Everton are slipped in an   infinite grayness as if it 's their normal condition  and noone seems to worry about it.

Thoughts ?

They're making an effort to elevate themselves now that Farhad Moshiri is majority shareholder. Their spending went from £77m (16/17) to £182m (17/18) in one year. Last year it was £90m. The problem is that this is all happening when everyone in the PL is rich, and when you look at the players they're signing, they're actually paying big fees for mid-table/lower table PL players. By comparison, Wolves have jumped to a higher level very quickly by recruiting from abroad, and Leicester went further by recruiting from France.

Before all the money came in, they weren't heavy spenders at all. Fellaini was their record signing at about £20m (higher than Arsenal's record signing for a long time), which was quite a lot at the time, but he was never going to lift them from mid-table. I always associated Moyes' version with a lack of quality attackers, since they always spent a fair bit on players from lower down in the PL, like Yakubu and Andy Johnson. They often played Fellaini and Cahill up front together. Then City get taken over and push one of the traditional top four (United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal) out, which pretty much killed any chance of someone from mid-table having a great year and getting in (as Everton did in 2004/05).

Then you get to the Martinez era and they become a much better attacking team, but their defence turns to shit. They get a couple of top seven finishes but now City are a title winning team and Spurs have improved a lot, so it's a top six instead of a four or five. So even if an Arsenal or Liverpool have a worse than normal year, there was still much competition to get into the CL.

I think Everton need a new stadium (which they're working on) to really stand a chance, but in this era that's not going to make a huge difference. If they managed to do it a few years ago, they would have been a more successful club.

I got 50/97 hmm

Spoiler:
Missed some really obvious ones, like Solskjaer, Shaqiri and Jovetic.

Then there were the blast from the past names I really should have got, like Benny McCarthy, Patrick Berger, Zoltan Gera, Roque Santa Cruz, Freddie Kanoute, Juan Pablo Angel and Tomasz Radzinski.

Screw all the African/Caribbean players, though. Who remembers Manucho, Ruel Fox and Miekel Leigertwood ffs.

I got 28 Laughing

Spoiler:
But in fairness I couldn't spell Mkhitarayn* and Solskjaer* Laughing Wasted too much time trying to find Italy, USA and Cameroon, and ended up missing Suarez for Uruguay. Proud to have gotten Benni McCarthy after I first went with Steven Pienaar.
Ozil, which I got after some hesitant thoughts, being the most successful scoring German is a disgrace for Germans Laughing

Spoiler your answers above Jay for others who might want to take the test. Luckily I clicked on the link quickly before reading your answers.

Looking at the ones I didn't get, atleast 10 of them I thought are English by nationality.

Spoiler:
I was absolutely frantic at the end lmao. Unbelievable how Aquilani for Italy, Cahill for Australi and Obafemi Martins for Nigeria were all wrong

Spent 10 mins spelling Pavluchenko correctly and it was wrong, so was Arshavin and Shevchenko was also a disappointment imo.

Klavan was so easy for the Estonia one lmao, my saving grace

I tried so hard to think of Italian strikers and midfielders that played in the PL in the 00s, then I realised it had to be from the 90s so I went with Zola and di Matteo, but Di Canio didn't even cross my mind

Got 39.

Was convinced Zola was for Italy, thought the site was malfunctioning ffs. Forgot about that fascist.

Was stumped when neither Kewell nor Cahill was not it for Australia.

Did not know Kanoute ever played in PL. I thought he retired or went to Arab leagues after Sevilla.

Somehow missed out on three Arsenal players, Mesut Özil (a truly wtf moment for me), Ljungberg and van Persie (kept trying for Bergkamp/van Nistelrooy). Now that I think of it, these two aren't even the 2nd best Dutch goalscorers in the PL.

Managed Ozil (although I guessed it, it was a wtf moment for me. I thought it would be Klinsmann or some German striker). However, I kept typing in Bergkamp and Van Nistelrooy instead of Van Persie as well Laughing Forgot about that dude somehow

Yeah , I remember irony on Everton when they had signed Lukaku for big money and ppl were saying they could get bankruptcy for it Laughing

Everton under Moyes were carried from fullbacks ( I rated so highly Baines, he'd deserved a better club ) but attack was so poor ... Anichiebe sometimes was playing and that's enough

Thanks for other informations , I didn't know it

44/97 on that Sporcle game

Some things to say:
I was convinced Berahino was English lol
Same for Sessegnon ( and honestly, I know nothing about Benin)

Just a Polish scorer in Premier League ? Weird, it is not really their league. If I think Polish players are so effective in Serie A (main CF for Napoli and Milan but not only)

I've barely heard some players, shame to have forgotten Jelavic (legit under Moyes ) and Roque Santa Cruz ( I insisted on Carodozo or Acuna lol While that Columbian guy ? Never heard.)

They're in a rebuilding phase anyway, might as well take the risk.

Yep. Huge risk if you ask me.
I like Lampard and I think he might be a good manager, or on his way to becoming one, but I think this is too much too fast for him.
And Chelsea's ridiculous rate of burning through managers, it's only kind of working as long as they keep hiring seasoned international top professionals, but hiring someone who has never coached in a top league before?

I would say this will go badly rather than well.

We're transfer banned, anyone we take is a risk, may as well take a high potential manager and give him some time to see how he does.
