Top 4 Chances Empty Top 4 Chances

Post by McAgger Wed Sep 04, 2013 7:16 am

I've been meaning to create a thread for this since the window is closed and we know how much everyone has improved.

Also I posted that in the general section, and I thought it's a good confidence booster.

2. Chelsea - 44

6. Spurs - 39

Since Liverpool acquired Coutinho 3.5 weeks after Sturridge the point tally in PL:

1. Arsenal - 42
2. United - 37
3. Chelsea - 37
4. Spurs - 37
5. Liverpool - 36
6. City - 33

How we are not in the discussion for this is beyond me since we've improved almost all of our main weaknesses from last season.

Plus we've improved even more now Thumbs up

Definitely we should think at the start of each season that we have a good chance of finishing in the top-4, that's where we should be, that's what our players believe, that's what our owners want and we fans crave.

It's too early to say much anything about the top-4 contenders, but the start has been perfect for us, let's see where this goes.

Who cares if the General section think were scrubs, we know how good we are and we know what we can achieve, at the end of the season they will be the ones eating their words when we weren't even mentioned for the slightest chance at the top 4.  Screw them, half of them talk about us like they even watch our games FFS, i wouldn't be surprised if 90% haven't even watched 20% of our games.

Last season the first half we had multiple issues with our depth and the level of our first team players. Our defense was very shaky and weak, with the additions we have brought in our defense looks as good as any other in the PL. We also added some depth to our attack and won't have 17-18 year olds being starters any more. But most of all we have BR, he has a great mind on him and knows how to use it. Let it play out, they can call us the under dogs, we don't care.

As for our chances, i really do think we have as much of a chance as spurs and arsenal. Don't get me wrong were not guaranteed anything, and our current start could all but be for nothing if we go on a losing streak, but we have the goods now. Our best player isn't even on the pitch, regardless with what happened with suarez in the off season and the feelings every one has for him now, he will give 100% for the club, be it for his own reasons, but never the less he will still be as great as he was last year.

It all depends on how BR utilizes our players, us making the top 4 now for me rests on how smart and intelligent, football wise, BR is. I got faith in him and i'm sure we will at least challenge for the top 4 positions.

I think we have a realistic shot at top 4 with our start to the season. I was of the opinion that Spuds wouldn't sell Bale, but now they have and bought a s**tload of players who will take a lot of time to gel together. I think we'll fight it off with Arsenal for the 4th place.

Oh good, let's get this thread started so that we'll have a place to complain about Rodgers/the squad come April/March when we're no in the top 4.

We have a solid squad but both Arsenal and Spurs (not even mentioning the other three) are still a bit better. Worse yet, we're on the outside looking in... and as Spuds and City have shown breaking through that glass ceiling is no easy task without heavy spending and/or another team slipping up.

We've had a great start but let's just enjoy for what it is and take it game by game, rather than getting too carried away.

Why is everything about the squad ?

If squads decide which team places where, then what's the point of having a manager ? what's the point of tactics ? what's the point of having a winning and group mentality.

I'm sick of this talk of squad. We have a very capable manager and I fully trust him to make us challenge this season.

If we win at Swansea in 2 weeks, there'll be a meltdown in the general section Laughing

Think all the Liverpool fans are overrating the team, and all the non-Liverpool fans underrate us.

We're somewhere in between. I'm with Red. I think we'll be closer to 5th, than 6th.

We need to step up a gear. We play for 40 minutes, score, then sit with 10 men behind the ball. Not too sure if we'll keep cleaning clean sheets myself...

So last year, apparently we weren't pragmatic enough at defending leads. and many many time we were caught on the counter attack.

This year, BR is being more pragmatic, sacrificing style to get points (something AVB did sooooo many times last season), and so far it's working. We limited an in-form Villa and RVP to one half chance THE ENTIRE game.

I know it's risky. we won't be doing it if we are playing Hull at home. but when we have a tough away game, or home against one of the big guns, this strategy is very fine by me. Mind you, we are still without our best counter attacking player in Suarez, and we'll be alot more effective on the counter with him back.

You have to comprehend that being able to defend for 50/60 minutes as a unit is not a negative thing.

Look at it this way, did we ride out the storm by the seat of our pants, like most teams that park the bus do? Or did we have pretty much total control by letting them have the ball, and not allowing them to counter attack us.

You have to understand a team can control the flow of the game by defending and even having much less possession. Having the ball is not a necessity to control the game. Controlling space and pace of the match is equally if not more important.

It's not a negative thing. I didn't say it was.

I just don't think we're going to manage to contain the opposition for the rest of the season. We've sort of been fortunate in the first 3 games...

beautiful Proud

It makes me laugh that people don't think we'll be in contention for the top 4. We may not get it at the end but no way in hell we're not giving everyone a run for their money.

PS. And not to get too ahead of myself but I think we will get it

To be fair, I don't think they say we won't contend, I think they're in the belief that all of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Spurs (to an extent) have a better team than we do and think 4 of those 5 will get there.

I think Aspas is very, VERY crucial. He is one of only three players who can get goals regularly. Also, he is the only cover as the other two will feature regularly.

We have a better squad but other, hell even Arsenal, have improved too. We are genuine contender for T4 but there are six teams fighting for those places. Last year we hoped to finish T4, but this year we are expecting to do that.
