While that theory makes sense it doesn't really mean that we would see more free kick goals.

I agree that we should change things up every once in a while but Ronaldo is and should be our main free kick taker. Any player who gets 7+ free kicks a season deserves to be the main guy.

I don't think he is a good free kick taker anymore, so I wouldn't mind if he got replaced.. Ozil on the right is good but other than that I don't know

I think Alonso's long shots are highly over-rated..

LOL ^^^^^

So many things wrong in that post bro.

What's this fascination with replacing Ronaldo in everything? Name me one player in World football who has scored more free kicks than Ronaldo last season.

Hell Cris already has two this season, one in pre-season (doesn't really count though I guess) and one for Portugal. Honestly get over yourselves Very Happy

LOL can you pull up his conversion rate? Scoring once every 100 shots is not good Wink

I would like to see how many times he gets the shot on target too, when he misses he usually misses horribly

FFS Goals > Conversion rate.

It's not like anybody elses conversion rate is even that impressive anyway.

News flash, very few free kicks ever end up in the back of the net.

I would love to find a free kick database, I bet there are a lot of better free kick takers than him around.... But goals are not better than conversion rate... You would rather score 10 Fks in a season but have 100 tries rather than 5 in 30??

I would rather have a player who is considered a threat almost every time instead of a player who can score some spectacular shots every once in a while..

Well, my only gripe with CR being our main FK taker in danger zones is that I, personally believe he's best suited for long to mid- range shots, where he can make use of his powerful right foot. His short-range freekicks aren't that amazing. I've seen him score from freekicks taken just outside the box a few times. In fact, he did it once under Pellegrini. But I think his style of shooting from set pieces just isn't optimal from short-range. I'd much rather see Kaká take the short-ranged ones on the left side, and he might, if he actually plays this season Rolling Eyes

But I would have scored more goals than you which is the entire point of the sport. This is not baseball, there is not penalty for not converting a shot. However the reward for making it is high and can be the difference maker.

Also what's to say that you would score more than 10 goals if you shot 70 more times? Football isn't an exact science.

Ronaldo may not have a very high conversion rate, specially on short range, but he puts the defense in a panic when he gets a freekick, and it gets in the subconscious of people to fool him in zone dangerous zones.

Also like when he shoots straight at the keeper, there is always a chance for rebound.

I like the tension and nervousness he creates for the opposition. But sure, if he can share more, with Alonso, Ozil and Sahin when he is back, then it's a good thing.

Kaka isn't a free kick specialist though, he hasn't scored that many from close range anyway.

I'd understand if we had Jouninho on the team but really, is Ronaldo so bad that he should not be the main free kick guy like OP is suggesting? I doubt that regardless of range.

Cris could be better true but he's already pretty good and few compare TBH

If it improves team morale then I don't mind him sharing, but aside from that there really isn't a reason to strip him of free kick duties when he is the team's free kick specialist.

Yeah, it's about team morale. I think Alonso would like to take some as well, i saw him arguing with ronaldo over a FK last time. Ozil was able to sweet talk get some because he doesnt take the BS from Ronaldo.

Imo, if he shares some attempts, it wouldnt be that bad, if Alonso is happier, why not?

I think we're lucky to have CR taking our free kicks, but I don't think he excels at it from close-range. I've never rated his close range free kicks that highly. I know that Kaká isn't a freekick specialist, but I prefer his style of taking free kicks from close range over that of Ronaldo, same goes for Özil, but he's been given the opportunity already. We don't get free kicks just outside of the box that often, so it's not really a big issue, but I'd really prefer a precision-shooter over CR from that distance.

I understand what your saying but I don't agree with it.. What makes Juninho a great free kick taker? I'll tell you what, every time he gets one you know there is a good chance it is going in... And what makes you think he has a good chance? He regularly hits the target and on top of that has a good conversion rate

Accuracy and conversion rate decide who is a good free kick taker

My point exactly. His mid range FKs are great but close range FKs are just awful. He barely hits the target let alone score. He at least could share those with his team mates who got better technique to do the job.

Ronaldo has scored what 15-20 freekicks in his last 2 seasons here? that is amazing also according to Castrol edge Ronaldo has the best conversion rate in the world maybe it is because he scores so many to make up for the many misses.

this is what i mean by underrating not its not exactly underrating.. we take him for granted ..if he scores then he is blamed for not dribbling, if he doesnt score, then he is in decline and is a cancer or what not.. plus his freekicks are not great, but they create so much of panic because they bounce just in front of the keeper thant the ineveitably will lead to a blunder or rebound or theyll go in.. ..ozil can take the ones from the far right though sometimes since it suits his left foot.. benzema, kaka are not freekick specialists so no lol.. sahin - let him play first, impress in training, integrate himself in the team etc..
btw how are marcelo or coentrao as set piece takers ? any ideas?

There is basically nothing to discuss here.

Ronaldo for direct free-kicks
Xabi/Ozil/Granero for set-piece delivery

no need to mess with a good thing!
