Essien could be back next month.

Why so negative on Essien?

I think he could be immense for us. Who knows he might have a resurgance like Lampard, most were doubting Lampard in the beginning of the season, and now imo Mata and Lampard are our best players.

The old Essien did the job of Mikel and Ramires, so lets hope for the best.

If he can get back to where he was then I'll be overjoyed, was such a talented player

With our current style of football? I disagree.

Why? Essien can do everything Ramires can do but better.

That's a very unfair comparison. Essien was beast when he was in his prime, and now he's definitely not all that and Ramires is better. Plus Ramires hasn't reached his prime yet. Essien would need to do wonders to bench Ramires, and with new adaption required, I'm sure that won't happen. At most we can hope he doesn't turn into Malouda and is an effective squad player.

And I can't see how a midfield of Lampard, Essien and Mikel is supposed to work when we're trying to play fast football. That would be like pairing Torres with Anelka and Malouda and expecting them to score goals. They would just start playing like they used to.

Well i'm referring to on form Essien, IF he gets back there I could easily see him as a starter, but that's a big if as I don't know if he can get back there.

as a holding midfielder Essien>Ramires. We have never seen Ramires as a holding midfielder in his Chelsea career. So if AVB wants someone to play as a holding midfielder he would choose between Essien, Mikel, or Romeu. So Ramires and Essien would not be competing at this role.

Essien could also play in the RCM, like he done for half of his career at Chelsea. This is where Ramires and Essien would be competing for playing time along with Meireles. Those three will most likely be rotating, probably depends on the match up.

I think Essien would compete with Mikel and romeu more then he would compete with Meireles and Ramires.

Here is how i break it down:

DM-Essien, Mikel, and Romeu
RCM- Essien, Ramires, and Meireles
LCM- Lampard and Meireles.

Give Essien as much time as he needs cos right now hes not vital and if he can get back to the way he was 3/4 years ago then it will be all worth it.
