Make or break for Eljero Elia. Time for the talent to finally shine

Judging by youtube clips or highlight packages one wouldn't be blamed for thinking Eljero Elia was a phenomenon in the world of football. His dribbling and skill appear to be nothing short of world class and whilst at the relatively young age of 24 (at least in Italian football) it would appear that his ability would surely make him a star for many years to come.

Ive also been a Hamburg fan for years, almost just as long as Juve and I can tell you. To all the Tifosi out there who looked at these videos and did indeed think we had a phenomenon on our hands... you have been fooled.

There are many points that suggested such a high step up for Eljero and a move to Juve wouldnt work. To touch on a few though, basically he had come off the back of a very inconsistent and unproductive season. Usually a move to a club like Juve would warrant a great season (see..Arturo Vidal) or at least a severe step up in quality over a period of time (see..Emmanuele Giaccherini) that would show that you have the characteristics to make it at a club with such high expectations. Eljero never had the right mentality and fight that would suit Juve and for that matter a spot in Conte's good books.

Let's roll back time and retell the story that so far has been Eljero Elia.

I bring u back to 2004 when Elia was playing for ADO Den Haag. He excelled in their youth team and featured for the senior side at the tender age of 17. He played 4 matches and got himself on the score sheet once. However a falling out with new coach at the time Lex Schoenmaker would force an exit for Elia. Many clubs lined up for his signature including Dutch powerhouse Ajax, however they didnt offer Elia a spot on the team instead an offer of being loaned back to ADO where he could further develop his game and return in a years time. Elia refused and took up the option of joining FC Twente where he would be guaranteed a starting place. It would be safe to say he had a very successful time at Twente where he was even recognised as 'Dutch young talent of the year' for 2009. An award won by players such as Ruud gullit, Luis Suarez and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Elia's reputation in europe was growing rapidly. This resulted with a big money move to German side Hamburg.

Elia's time in Germany started well with his form off the bench soon warranting a starting place. However it soon came to a halt. Injuries and inconsistency had led to his demotion from the team and the purchase of Marcell Jansen (predominately a LB)from Bayern Munich didnt help his push for first team selection as well as the fact Jansen was now playing LM due to the great form of the young and rising German left back Dennis Aogo. Elia sought a move away from Germany with Liverpool, Juventus and Manchester United all expected to enquire for his services. His pricetag was set at 20M. A price seen to steep for clubs who saw the Dutchman as injury prone and inconsistent to warrant such a high price tag. Despite his undeniable talent Elia never got the transfer he wanted to revitalise his career and was stuck at Hamburg for another term to play the super sub role. The partnership of Aogo/Jansen grew from strength to strength and had now moved on to influence the German national team.

23 March 2010

Hamburg midfielder Eljero Elia has criticised his club for unnecessarily dragging out his injury agony.

Elia has undergone surgery in his native Holland on an ankle injury which has been troubling him for several months.

The Holland international feels he should have gone under the knife before Christmas but that he was prevented from doing so by his club, much to the 23-year-old's frustration.

"I was pushing to get treated in Holland before the winter, but the people in charge at HSV didn't want me to," he told the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper. "If they had allowed that, I would be fit again now."

To add insult to injury, Elia feels he has been abandoned by his club since the operation took place last Friday.

"Nobody has contacted me and that saddens me," he added.

Elia was stuck on the bench and the lack of game time was taking its toll on not only him physically but mentally. His call up to the Dutch national team due to a recent string of great games was seen as a major confidence boost for him and ever since he hasnt looked back. Being called on many occasions for International duty and was seen as a key member for the squad. Eventually even making his World Cup debut in South Africa 2010.

After a great world cup Elia was lined up again by the same clubs who had previously wanted him the year before and it seemed his big money move was just around the corner. Hamburg had once again set a price tag that was too heavy for clubs, particularly Juventus & Liverpool.

'We do not want to lose Eljero Elia and we also have no need to sell him. He is a very important player of our team'

It seemed once again Elia was staying at Hamburg though the promises of former coach Martin Jol wernt lived up to in the past how he told Elia he would feature regularly for the club. New coaches came along and Elia was yet again promised the same things that if he stayed he would get regular gametime and play a major role in the squad. Elia later that season was nothing more than a luxury sub. The Aogo/Jansen partnership continued to work and Elia's anger grew, broken promises lead to frustration. Here is a young player who had not so long ago featured in a world cup final for a very successful Dutch NT and was soon after sitting on the bench for a mid table squad.

Adding insult to injury... Elia had a poorly applied tattoo that resulted in a severe infection. Which eventually led to another Bundesliga side Werder Bremen banning all their players from getting tattoo's!!

After enduring a horrible season with Hamburg which was much like the previous one Elia is now linked again with a transfer and yet again would you believe it HSV slap on a massive price tag much to his disatisfaction Elia demands a transfer with Hamburg unwilling to give him up and promise him the same things as in the past. However 2 days left in the transfer market and the Elia/Hamburg relationship is finally broken, Juventus come in with an improved offer and give him a new beginning to a stalled career.

Elia's start to life at Juventus has been poor if not disastrous. 2 months into his new beginning and he has featured only once and has lost his place in the Oranje set up with a spot at the Euro 2012 also looking increasingly unlikely if he continues to not recieve any game time. His career is rapidly spiralling downhill with even recent rumours suggesting that Juventus have given him an ultimatum in which he has 10 days to prove his worth or he can consider himself gone by the flipside of the 2011/12 football calendar.

Its times like these which can make or break a players career. Elia has now hit a crossroads and he must step up if he is ever going to succeed at a top club. Mental toughness is the main attribute needed. An attribute that coach Antonio Conte displayed quite frequently in his playing days and that the environment he has placed himself in now is so renowned for. 2011/12 is make or break for Eljero Elia and although it has started poorly for him there is plenty of time for him to turn it around and possibly even save his career at Juve.

Its time for the phenomenon seen from those youtube videos or highlight reels to come to life and show us all that he not only represents the fun side of the game but the industrial side too and its that industrial side that only once he realises how to bring it out will his talent ever shine.

I dnt see how juve can be giving him an ultimatem of improving if hes only played 45 bloody mins.

Unless he has been shockingly bad at training i really cant see why conte hasnt given him more of a chance.

Sighhh yet more money wasted by moratta, get rid of the fool already, first we had secco and now this guy.

Im sorry i know a lot of juve fans like but majority of his signings have been shockin.

I wish we still had moggi Sad now he knew what a good player looked like.

How? Once he proves he deserves a place through training then he will play. Why should've play when he doesn't deserve a spot? After all we are first and flying without him

He was quality at Hamburg but ofcourse he needs time to adapt. How will that happen if they dont play him?
