Aquilani isnt exactly an AM, he's more like a marchisio, or a adventurious CM. What italy is lacking is a creative player like Ozil who will fill the gap between the lines, especially if they field a 433 formation.

I really hope Cassano can make it, we have great CM's, but no one really with that creativity that Cassano can bring.

Giovinco is probably the best alternative Italy has for AM right now, but he's not really someone you'd call world beater... Other than that perhaps Rossi? But it's been a while since I've heard about Rossi

Is the question about Italy's midfield specifically as a unit, as individuals, for Italy or for their clubs?

The list Zarola provided, which should also include Montolivo, shows that Italy has quality and to an extent, great depth, however as has been stated, a player with Özil's characteristics would really complete the unit. Also worthy of consideration are De Rossi's performances for the national team and particularly his effectiveness when partnered with Pirlo compared to his role at Roma.

All in all it's still a very strong midfield, however as a unit I prefer Spain and Germany.

I'd love to see Giovinco used as a trequarista by Prandelli, however unfortunately he has only been used in Cassano's position as a second striker and it's unlikely that Prandelli will compromise his stance on using four midfielders at such a late stage unless compelled to by a drastic situation.

Maggio yeah, he's a WB...dunno bout Cristicio,.

Anyway...that's what Italy's midfield has the potential to be and it's quite good.Wether or not they have the talent in other positions to play it is another story altogether,
